My son started 1st grade earlier this month and in just the first few weeks he has come home with some “yellow dots” for distracting others. This theme of distraction isn't new to me. I remember explaining to him once that is was OK to get distracted now and then, but I encouraged that when it’s time for business, get to it!

Wow! We sure have a full issue this week! I wasn’t planning on writing a column but I’ve found a little space so I thought I would give a shout-out to the people who, in my opinion, have one of the toughest jobs out there. Hey Customer Service Job oriented folks!

Ten years ago I donned a cap and gown, marched myself down a long walkway, shook a couple hands, and received my high school diploma on stage. This year I got to watch two people I love do the same; my sister graduated from High School, and my son graduated from Kindergarten. As a society, we make a big deal out of graduations.

So you think you want to teach your kids to be leaders, right? Followers are not only weak, unoriginal, and uninteresting, but what you really want is for them to not follow the bad kids. You have the old “Would you jump off a bridge if…” talk. You teach them about the dangers of gateway activities that lead to serious jail time.

I am no Housewife. Yes I work a full time job and I’m a full time mom as well. I know there are many ladies out there that do both of those jobs, and keep the house clean. Maybe not spotless, no one’s perfect, but “well-kept”. I am not one of those ladies.

Sometimes I think that my one true hobby is having hobbies. There are some that have stuck with me through the years, mainly reading. Interesting to note that I turn into a slightly awful person when I’m reading, unaware and unwilling to share in what’s going on around me. I read an entire book this last Saturday.

I remember when my parents became people. I’m assuming they’ve always been human beings… but there was a clear point in my young adulthood when I realized that my parents were people, with their own hopes and fears and experiences wholly separate from me. The process began the first time I came home for Christmas after living in my first apartment for about a year.

It's nice to be reminded that you're not a completely awful person. Sometimes it comes in the form of your Boss telling you that you've done a good job. Maybe your child succeeds in something that you taught them how to do. Or a friend thanks you for helping them move that ridiculously heavy dresser into their new 3rd floor apartment.

Every time I went there he asked me the same question, and every time I politely refused. He was persistent, never missed the opportunity to ask, but I stayed firm in my standards. I would never give in to him, no matter what. A woman can only hold out for so long though, and one day, about four years ago, I broke.

I must confess, since I took over as Editor of the Blanco County News, I’ve looked forward to the prospect of writing a column. It’s been nearly a year since I began here, and with the start of this new Lifestyle page, I thought, “Now is the time!” Even though the opportunity had been presented, I found myself without a clear vision of what to write about.
