I missed my golden opportunity to wish my dear friend Leona Smylie "Happy Birthday," so this is the next best thing. I am blessed for having met her. And in the crush, I didn't get to offer my congratulations to Harold and Florine Lord on their 64th wedding anniversary.

Gentle Readers: Fall is in the air, somewhere! And the weather report says it might be a sort of wet Labor Day Weekend! We can only hope... The kids are back in school and a routine has been put in place. I hope everybody got the teachers they hoped for and everybody's school year is marvelous!

Love is in the air in Blanco. Keep your eyes and ears open! Reverend Wally Hiller was feted for his 90th birthday yesterday at Blanco United Methodist Church. I know for a fact he got lots of kisses (because I was one of the kissers) and was given a birthday party, after church, in the social hall.

Dear Readers: Brush up on your songwriting techniques – Blanco County Inn is having a theme song/jingle contest to celebrate the 80th birthday of the motel. The winner will be announced on September 24, 2011, at RalphStock (at the Blanco County Inn). So far, Anna and Echoe Burkhart and Nelson Broyal have great entries, but there are still lots of people in Blanco, who could possibly outwrite them – you will never know until you try! Our thoughts go out to the family of Edythe Knox, who pa ...

At last, an Ada and Ronnie Cooley sighting! Everybody seems to be in fine fettle. They were gathering at the bowling alley for lunch with relatives, and then the two of them will be traveling to Arkansas to visit and for a wedding. I am sure a good time will be had by all! If you see my missing goats, send them home!

On Sunday, Marilyn, Lawrence, and Nan Mikes went to Seguin for a Father’s Day lunch and homemade ice cream. Debbie, Bobby, and Travis Burt and Shelby, Geoff, and Brody Striedel prepared the lunch. The best part of the visit was seeing Brody! He is almost two weeks old, and he got a lot of attention from the great-grandparents and a very proud great-aunt. Paul & Marcie Domke, of Valparaiso, Indiana, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary!

The past couple weeks have been taken up with the Lavender Festival, but now we’ve put away our purple until next year and can just enjoy the lavender when it blooms, which will be after it rains........The festival really was a lot of fun - the music was awesome (this displaced West Virginia girl actually got to hear some bluegrass, which made her VERY happy), the food was good, the beer was cold, the Lavender Lizzies were a hit once more, and the vendors couldn’t have been more amenabl ...

Dear Hearts and Gentle People: I was informed of a random act of kindness the other day and wanted to pass it along - On June 1, between Blanco and Johnson City, a PEC crew was kind enough to stop and aid a lady in distress — they changed her tire!

A belated congratulations goes out to all the Mutton Busters, including Ryder Adams and Noah Schwarzlose. Those young cowboys and cowgirls let everybody know they have the right stuff, baby! I bet the sheep will really be running scared next year! Lavender Festival will be here soon, too soon for some and not soon enough for others - we can certainly use lots of volunteers in every area, those of you who will still be in town.

There have been many sightings of Ada Cooley in the last few weeks – one was even with Dolores and Howard Cox! In other news, things are starting to hop around Blanco (and I don’t mean the Easter bunny)! This weekend is the Tiny West Memorial Bull Riding at Yett Park. Next weekend is one nobody will want to miss – everything is timed just right, so you can go from one event to another, starting with Market Days, the Real Ale bike ride, t ...

The biggest news this week is that I forgot the biggest news two weeks ago. Judy and Bob Dorsett celebrated their 20th anniversary by going out for a night on the town at Fort Sam Houston - it was more than just Fort Sam - it was at the Harlequin Dinner Theater, where they "Boogied Back to Texas"

On Saturday, March 26, Leona Calhoun celebrated her 97th birthday at Live Oak Medical Center with her family in attendance: her son James Calhoun and his wife Arnella, sons Joe and Gene Calhoun, daughter Bonnie and her husband Johnny Wood, grandsons Lance and Kevin Calhoun, and great-grandson CW Calhoun. Everyone enjoyed a fried chicken lunch as well as cake and ice cream.

A Memorial Life Celebration for Dixie Lee Hallenberger (October 2, 1948-December 15, 2010) will be held at Gem of the Hills on Saturday, March 19, 2011, from 1:00 to 2:30 PM. We commiserate with Nell Krueger in the loss of Prince Pooh, her faithful companion for 16-3/4 years. Some people feel an animal is just an animal, pet or not - I, however, think they become an integral part of the family, especially if they are a house pet, so I sympathize (and empathize) with Nell as well. ...

Dear gentle readers, If it weren't for Pat Lane, I wouldn't have known this! Barbara and Joe Crowley, who were high school sweethearts in San Antonio, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family at the Uptown Blanco Restaurant on March 4. Family members came from several Texas towns and from Oklahoma as well.
