Cynthia Smith reports that a few weeks ago while perusing the food column by Addie Broyles of the Austin Statesman, her interest was drawn to the subject of chicken salad. Broyles went on in the article to say that chicken salad recipes may be very varied by southern cooks and asked that anyone wanting to share their recipe with her should call or email her. Cynthia called and she told Broyles about her two ways to make chicken salad, one way being a more savory sort with no fruits added and more of a smooth concoction, but her preferred recipe is what her husband Pat Smith and one daughter called 'fruit salad with a little chicken'. Neither recipe are that unusual but because in the conversation with Broyles she was asked how the recipe came to pass and from there Cynthia told her about the award winning cookbook that The Community Garden of Johnson City in 1991. They also talked about the wonderful help from Kitty Crider, then Food editor, at the Statesman and the wonderful launching of the cookbook with full page color pictures and stories about the women who put together the cookbook. This story also carried a picture of Potluck on The Pedernales and told where it could still be bought and of course there was a mention of Lady Bird Johnson being a charter member of the Garden Club so many long years ago and of the chapter of recipes from Lady Birds cookbook at the summer White House at Stonewall. The entire story can be found online in the Statesman edition for March 25, 2015. Cynthia says, "It is always nice to grab some 'free' mention for Johnson City and our award winning cookbook."
