A class-action lawsuit, member demands, and a state senator’s continued pressure have finally forced the Pedernales Electric Cooperative to pry open the doors of secrecy that have surrounded its business for decades.
On Tuesday, the PEC disclosed that General Manager Bennie Fuelberg’s 2006 compensation was more than twice the figure touted by the co-op during the summer and fall.

November 19, 2007–In a unanimous vote, the Blanco County Commissioners Court voted to accept the settlement offer of the Texas Historical Commission (THC) and pay a $70,000 fine.

Plans for an expanded police station on Blanco Avenue were aired at the November 13 meeting of the Blanco city council. As explained by officer Gary Pittman, the plans drawn by local contractor Jack Allen will incorporate the current annex in the first phase of construction, adding a wall so that the department can move to that site from the current cramped location on the square.

On September 24, Dennis Heffington, an exterminator with Oasis Pest Control and Lawn Care, found several artifacts hidden under the floor of the Old Blanco County Courthouse. Heffington was hired by the Preservation Society (OBCCPS) to spray for termites, including down in the very tight crawl-space under the floors.

The Blanco Chamber of Commerce, local businesses, and the Old Blanco County Courthouse Preservation Society (OBCCPS) are completing preparations for the annual Lighting of the Courthouse and the Blanco Town Square, this coming Friday, November 23rd.
Festivities will begin at 5:00 PM with the first carriage rides and the gathering of singers on the north steps of the Old Blanco County Courthouse.

For the second straight year, the Panthers defeated the Reagan County Owls to claim a bi-district championship and advance to the second round of the state play-offs. Although the Owls would dominate on paper, Blanco would force four turnovers and cause the Owls to turnover the ball on downs two more times to stop any scoring threats as the Panthers would pull out a 24 to 14 win.

Herman and Mildred Riba celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on October 27th, at the Live Oak Medical Center in Blanco, where Mr. Riba is a resident. Hosting the celebration were their children - daughter, Patsy Lewis of Johnson City, and son, Joe D. Riba of Blanco.
The anniversary cake was a three-tier white confection accented with a bride and groom.

The Texas Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration on Nov. 13 released a 1,072-page "draft environmental impact statement" for the proposed Trans-Texas Corridor/Interstate 69 project.
The draft statement examines a 650-mile long area stretching from far south Texas to extreme northeast Texas that someday could include a matrix of new roads, rail and utilities.

The Board of Directors of the Pedernales Electric Cooperative on Tuesday announced long-awaited plans to initiate a number of changes in its governance and business practices.

Hearing the screams of a woman, James ran to a parked car, thinking the woman was being taken advantage of. James was prepared for the worst. What he found was a young woman about to give birth in her front seat. Being in the middle of nowhere, James crawled in the car and assisted in the birthing of a 6- pound baby girl.

John Alexis Fortune of Blanco was born March 15, 1921, in San Antonio, Texas, and passed away on November 17, 2007, on his Blanco County scenic rural property.
In the Navy during World War II, John flew in a PBY to rescue pilots in the South Pacific; he then was a patriot in the Air Force for 20 years.
John, predeceased by his wife, Jean Hall, whom he married on June 6, 1945, in San Antonio, is dearly labeled “Daddy” and “Grandpa” by family.

Romie Bennett was born, lived her 88 years, and passed away November 14 on the ranch she loved near Spring Branch. She is survived by her two sons; S.L. Bennett of New Braunfels and Pat Bennett and wife Sandia of Comfort. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Jeanne Vogel Mershon.

Hill Country Karate’s Juniors and Adults classes meeting at the Blanco Community Learning Center closed out the fall session with rank up testing in November. Hill Country Karate (HCK) is a division of the American Society of Karate. The primary goal of HCK instructors is to develop students mentally, as well as physically, by focusing on attitude, respect, and discipline.

The Blanco Lady Panther’s took to the road for their first road game of the season on Tuesday, November 13. The Panthers traveled to Marion where they faced the Bulldogs which made it to the 3A Regional Quarterfinals last season.
The freshman team was the first to take to court. It was a close game with each team equally balanced on the court with a final score of 8-10 in favor of Marion after the first period.

The eighth grade boys basketball team took on the Comfort Bobcats on Monday, November 19 in Comfort.
The Panther ‘B’ team took a victory over the Bobcats with a final score 17-9.
Steven Lieck was high scorer with a total of six points followed by Doug Coats who had five points.
Devon Magee finished the night with three points followed by Kellam Nabers who had two points and Mikey Simon who scored one point.
The ‘A’ team was next to take to the court.

After such a hard fall against the Bulldogs last week, the JV Lady Panthers struggled once more as they went up against the Wimberley Texans on Monday, November 19.
The Texans started strong and needless to say, they finished strong as the Panthers found it almost impossible to get the ball into the net.

The Varsity Lady Panthers took to the court against the Wimberley Texans on Monday, November 19 in Blanco. This was not the same team that played Marion less then a week ago. This Panther team meant business, and you could definitely tell when they stepped out onto the court in their shiny new white jerseys.

The eighth grade Lady Panther Basketball teams swept the Comfort Deer Monday night in Blanco. The ‘B’ team won 10-6. Highlights include Maggie Dennis who scored six points, Andrea Torre and Mica Reyna both finished with 2 points each.
The ‘B’ team is currently 1-0.
The ‘A’ team defeated Comfort 30-22.

The Blanco seventh grade boys traveled to Comfort on Monday, November 19. The ‘B’ team took to the court to earn a win over the Bobcats with a final score of 16-13.
Tyler Brown and Gilbert Rodarte both finished the night with six points. Steven Fuller and Lane Hoelting both scored two points.
