At the December 10 meeting of the Blanco ISD trustees, parents Ann Broyles and Chrissie McGinnis once again addressed the board with their concerns about deteriorating facilities, including 12-year-old portable classrooms at Blanco Elementary in which fifth graders are housed, mold in the pre-K portable classroom, and the condition of the original old yellow building.

The 67th annual Silver Tea for the benefit of Blanco Library was enjoyed by all Thursday, Dec. 6, in the Old Blanco County Court House. The event was hosted and served by the Blanco Woman’s Club members. Guests hailed from a wide area and the donations have topped $26,000 as of publishing time. The decorations were beautifully set by Barbara Crowley, with many poinsettias donated by the Arnosky Flower Farm.

What is flat, rectangular, portable, made out of wood pulp, and doesn’t need to be charged or plugged in? Answer: a book. Almost all public libraries now provide free Internet access providing timely information, but let’s not forget that they provide books for our reading pleasure and also free of charge.

Noel–These movies just keep getting better and better; I thought the first four were great, especially the Goblet of Fire, but the Order of the Phoenix is incredible; the additional characters are very entertaining as are the special effects. Like I said, everything just keeps getting better and better. If you haven't gotten into this series yet, it's not too late.

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission announced plans to go statewide with a new smart card system that it said would create a more convenient and secure way for people to verify their Medicaid coverage. The card, which looks like a credit card, automates the patient check-in process, which presently requires provider staff to copy data manually from paper forms. The American Legion Memorial Highway Post 352 color guard marched in the OBCCPS Christmas parade on Saturday, December 8 and then staffed their monthly food booth at Blanco Market days. Eight recovering wounded troops from BAMC and five escorts from the Kayak Anglers Society of America who had spent the day kayak fishing at the newly stocked Blanco State Park toured the Market Days area and were treated to hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage wraps, chips and sodas at the Post food booth.

With the end of the year 2007 fast approaching, the Board of Directors wishes to announce that the Center will be closed beginning December 22, 2007, and will reopen January 5, 2008. This will give the volunteers time off to prepare for the holidays and be with their families. The Center is operated by volunteers only and no one receives compensation.

On November 30th Blanco State Park bid farewell to long time employee Kenneth Moore who, after 33 years of service to the park, has retired. A dinner was held in his honor the following Saturday with dozens of friends, colleagues and family in attendance. Mr. Moore began his tenure with Texas Parks and Wildlife and Blanco State Park in 1974.

The Ranch Hiway Club of the Blanco County EEA met December 4 in the festive country home of Lola Dowdy for their annual Christmas party. After a brief business session led by Vice President Gwen Risinger, it was time for one of the most exciting events of their year. Secret Sisters for the year were revealed as Christmas gifts were received and opened.

Texas Cooperative Extension hosted the day long “District 10 County Commissioners’ Court Conference” at the Research and Extension Center in Uvalde on Dec. 5th. About 30 county commissioners and county judges from more than 20 Texas counties attended the conference. Participants received continuing education units. The V.G. Young Institute of County Government was the educational sponsor for the program.

December 4, 2007 – The Blanco County Child Protection & Family Advocacy Board held its second annual Christmas Wrapping Party at the home of Co-Chairman Bill Swiss and his wife, Elaine. The Swiss’ lovely home, in Round Mountain, became a swirl of rustling paper, ribbons, and laughter as each gift was lovingly wrapped.

More than 600 people filled the bleachers for the first two nights of free performances of the Living Nativity Christmas pageant at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson City. Most of the guests were local residents or from the Central Texas area, but some had come from as far away as Fort Worth.

St. Ferdinand’s Catholic Church held an anniversary service last Sunday to celebrate 67 years in the ommunity of Blanco. The church was constructed and dedicated April 9, 1940. Eduardo Pina, 88, of Blanco passed away on December 5, 2007 at Hill Country Hospital in Fredericksburg. He was born October 13, 1919 in La Costa, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents Pablo and Isabel Pina and one daughter, Patty Ledesma. He is survived by two sons, John and Eddie Pina, both of Blanco, three daughters, Lupe Rendon of Fredericksburg, Sylvia Miller of Dripping Springs, Olga P.

Dear Editor On Friday, November 30, my daughter was traveling home on 281 heading North when someone stopped in front of her to turn into the Gem of the Hills. With the roads being wet and slick, and her being a young driver, she ended up in the parking lot of Baker’s Survey, after going through the ditch.

Dear Editor, I am writing this letter in order to close a very traumatic episode in my life. In November 2006, my husband and I were returning from a family wedding in Lakeway, Texas. Our van window had been shattered during the reception by a thief looking for quick cash. When we returned home, we found that same burglar and his accomplice at our home. I immediately called 911 and was assisted and calmed by the voice on the line.

Winter weather brings more than colder temperatures and holiday celebrations. It also brings a significantly higher number of residential fires and accidental carbon monoxide (CO) poisonings. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), home fires are most prevalent in December and January and the number of CO related injuries and deaths increase in winter months when furnaces, space heaters and other fuel burning appliances are in use.

On Tuesday, December 4, 2007 Blanco Elementary students competed against other schools for UIL. Blanco competed against districts such as Sonora, Mason, Junction, and Brady. Students worked hard to prepare for their events and should be commended for all their hard work.

The eighth grade boys basketball team participated in the St. Mary’s tournament on Saturday, December 8. The Panthers faced St. Mary’s in the opening game as they took their first loss with a final score 37-52. Filiberto Navarro scored a total of 16 points followed by Tanner Rogers who had eight points.

The Varsity Lady Panthers traveled to Llano for three days to play a total of five game. The Panthers faced Lampasas in the first round. The game started slow on both sides of the court with a score of 1-6. The game picked up some in the second period as the teams retired to the locker rooms.

The Blanco Middle School boys basketball teams faced the Junction Eagles. The seventh grade ‘A’ team took a big victory with a final score Blanco 25, Junction 17. Sam Isenberg was high scorer with a total of 14 points. Ian Ray followed with five points. Will Byler, Darren White and Chad Marshalll each finished the night with two points each. The eighth grade ‘B’ team were defeated after a long hard battle.

The Lady Panthers took to the road as they traveled to the little town of Harper to face the Ladyhorns. The Panthers started out strong and took the lead by three points at the end of the first period. By half time, however, the Panthers had a five point lead as they retired to the locker rooms. Band competes in Boerne December 9, 1977 On Thursday, December 1st, nineteen members of the Panther Band went to Boerne to compete in District Band Tryouts. These nineteen people represent the largest group of Blanco band members to compete at District Band. At the District level, there are approximately 10 schools participating from this area.
