In 1858, several men who lived in Pittsburg were eager to create Blanco County for financial ventures. It was at that time that the settlement across the river from Pittsburg became Blanco.

Wayne Gosnell reported at the regular meeting of the Blanco city council on April 8 that a group of concerned citizens turned crusaders is endeavoring to keep the night skies of Blanco unpolluted by contributing to a fund to buy light shields for the Lavender Capital Laundry. As Gosnell explained to this reporter before the meeting, the shields are custom-made and rather expensive; hence, contributions are helping the owners buy and install them.

As we celebrate and acknowledge our roots during this year of Blanco County’s 150th anniversary, it is natural for some of us to turn our minds to the future, perhaps wondering “Our past is interesting, but what’s next? Where are we headed? Is our future secure and bright?” The future is important, no doubt, but it hinges on the quality of life right now.

Who among us fails to remember the finger-like bodies of water called the “Great Lakes” way up high on the U.S. map?
I have always conjured lake-like thoughts about them, not knowing until now how wrong I’ve been.
As of March 21, I can provide first-hand experience suggesting that “Lake Michigan” should be called “Ocean Michigan.”…

"One problem with thunderstorms is people see them the way they see snakes," said Troy Kimmel, who teaches weather and climate at the University of Texas.
"Most people see a snake and assume it's dangerous, when only a small fraction of snakes in Blanco County are a threat to humans. Most are beneficial, eating mice and rats.
"Thunderstorms are the same way.

The directors of the Pedernales Electric Cooperative have agreed to reach into PEC coffers to help pay the proposed $4 million settlement of the class action law suit filed against them and the cooperative last summer.
Because the PEC carries a Directors and Officers Insurance Policy with AIG with a $15 million limit, many members and observers assumed that AIG would pay the $4 million settlement less the $125,000 deductible.
PEC in-house attorney Kimberly Paffe confirmed that the insurer wil ...

This year "coach pitch" has changed to "machine pitch". The boys and girls are still learning how to hit balls being thrown to them from a machine rather than a person.
It appears that first grader, Hunter Toler, has mastered the art of hitting.
