First, the Blanco Cemetery Association would like to thank the Blanco Historical Society for the beautiful Historical Medallion that was placed by the gate of the old cemetery. It is a wonderful addition to the cemetery. The medallion honors the past, and will have the admiration of the present and the future.

It has been brought to my attention that several people within our community have been misled with untruths and false statements regarding our facilities and the rumor of a bond referendum at Blanco ISD. The following article should clear up the misunderstandings.
Blanco ISD’s immediate needs and concerns with the mold issues at the elementary campus have been addressed, and hopefully our resolution to the mold issue will continue to be successful.

High-speed broadband Internet connections are cheap and prolific in larger cities. According to one company, Blanco should be hooked up soon.
Time Warner Cable companies in Austin and San Antonio provide such connections to customers over their cable networks. Phone companies, like Verizon, which serves the Blanco area, provide broadband over DSL connections that use the standard phone lines.

You may have seen bicyclists on the Hill Country roads and in town. It's a popular sport and the scenic byways of this region are a draw for many, even from across the United States.
Those bicyclists carrying packs full of supplies aren't local. The Adventure Cycling Association is one organization that brings people through Blanco.

Bonnie Dworaczyk and Richard Palmer, Jr. were united in marriage on March 15,2008, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Blanco, Texas. The two families became one at a ceremony and celebration on April 19, 2008.
Bonnie and Richard took the Dollar Dance to a whole new level with a donation dance in honor of both their fathers, Richard Palmer, Sr.

Trey and Kary Phipps happily announce the birth of their son, Trent Matthew. He was born April 18, 2008 at Seton Southwest in Austin, TX. Trent is welcomed home by his sister Kristy of Austin, brother Jerrick, grandparents Roy and Doris Phipps, great-grandparents Anna Phipps, Vernon and Hilda Schmidt, Uncle Brad, Aunt Kim, DJ and Brandon Phipps all of Blanco.

AUSTIN - With grocery bills and livestock feed prices inching higher and higher, Gov. Rick Perry asked a federal agency to help bring relief.
In a letter dated April 25, Perry requested a waiver from the Environmental Protection Agency to cut the renewable fuel mandate for ethanol produced from grain by 50 percent.

In this era of global fluctuation, gardeners across the earth are seeing changes in their normal Climate Zones. It's really a challenge for us here in Blanco County! Our property is a small lot that seems to have 3 separate climate zones, 3 separate ecosystems on 5 acres. If you count the neighbor's across the road, maybe 4 or 5 totally diverse growing systems.

This year’s One Book, One Community program, offered annually by the Blanco Library, is featuring a book based upon the work of the StoryCorps Project begun in New York after the 9/11 attack. “Listening Is an Act of Love” is the book selection, and copies are now available at the library.
The theme of the book has led to the development of a series of programs for the community which will feature Blanco natives telling their stories.

Everyone is invited to a big barbecue on the banks of the Pedernales River, reminiscent of one held by Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson at their Stonewall ranch in 1967. The Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park and the Friends of LBJNHP are joining forces to re-create the presidential barbecue held to honor members of the Organization of American States.

David Key, co-owner of Treetops Ranch, was awarded national recognition in New Orleans recently when he was presented with the Living Legends of Dance award by Triple Crown Dance Championships of the USA. The award was given by the producers and directors of the Triple Crown Dance Championships, Larry and Dianne Dean.
David is in wonderful company, as Marge Champion and Cyd Charisse as well as the late Gene Nelson have also received this prestigious award.

K & C Supply has taken over where Blanco Valley Farm & Ranch Supply left off. After almost ten years in business, former owners Jeff and Kimberlea Mayfield decided to retire.
Kirk Felps, a former employee of Blanco Valley Farm & Ranch Supply, is the owner of the newly opened business, K & C Supply.

Young Life recently acquired a new area director, Stephen Mackey, from College Station, Texas. They are very excited to welcome him to this area!
On Monday, April 28, the local group traveled to Luckenbach to enjoy a gathering of other local Young Life groups. They were among 325 other Hill Country students.

• The Johnson City FFA chapter will be holding their Annual Rabies clinic from 3:00 to 6:00 pm in the high school agriculture shop. Dr. Paul Axtell from the Deer Creek Veterinary clinic will be providing his veterinary services at a discounted price Prices for this year’s clinic are Rabies $7.00, and Distemper and Parvo for dogs is $21.00.

The April Chimney Valley EEA meeting was held at the home of Jan Redmond with nine members and one guest present. Members were reminded of the upcoming exhibit at the Blanco Library, TX Rural Women at Work 1930-1960, to be on display at the Library during the month of May.

Sooner or later, Blanco County will have a health disaster, and your neighbors will need your help.
It may just be a bad flu season; we've had some of those in the past few years. But it also could be one of those truly terrible bugs that break out once every century or so, like a killer strain of bird flu or something out of the tropics.

The KBB beautification volunteers were busy today spreading a large pickup load of cedar mulch on all of the beautiful plants in front of the city hall and in the Bindseil Park. The mulch was donated by the new beautification volunteers, Linda Howard, Charles Rothenbach, and Robert Stafford. The city yard, Bindseil Park and Byars Building landscaping are all designed by Judy Dorsett, planted and maintained by Keep Blanco Beautiful.

The 4th annual Blanco County Relay for Life is now history. However, it is still not too late to make donations. Contributions for Relay '08 will be placed "on the books" through August of the current year.

State and national hospital political action committees have named Lucille Rochs of Fredericksburg as a 2007 Most Valuable PAC Player.
Lisa Kepple, director of HOSPAC, the Texas Hospital Association’s political action committee, said Mrs. Rochs was nominated to receive the award in recognition of her dedication as a long-time HOSPAC leader.

The Blanco Rodeo Association will be holding a Tiny West Memorial PBR bull riding on Saturday, May 3rd at Yett Memorial Park in Blanco, TX. Activities will begin Friday evening May 2nd with DNZ Rodeo Company junior bull riding event to begin at 5:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, a washer pitchin’ tournament will begin at 1:00 p.m.

After 8 years of planning, preparation and many prayers, the members of Blanco Cowboy Church opened the chute gates on Saturday morning, April 26th, for their 1st Annual “Roping For Jesus” Team Roping held at Yett Memorial Park and Blanco Rodeo Association Arena. God’s clear blue Hill Country skies greeted cowboys and cowgirls traveling into Blanco from the north, south, east and west, and by 10 a.m., the park was filled to capacity with pickups, trailers and horses.

Robert Wilson Riddell, 91 was born September 30, 1916 in Round Mountain, Texas to James Hugh Riddell and Linnie Bell Herrington Riddell. Robert was born into a family of six children, one that died at an early age. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Helen Maxine Riddell.

Theodore Nelson Withers, 83, passed away Monday, April 28, 2008 in Fredericksburg, Texas. Nelson was born August 13, 1924, to W. H. and Faye Casparis Withers. He spent his entire life in Johnson City, Texas.
In addition to his parents, Nelson was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Margaret Mearle Lackey, three brothers Clark, Charlie and Harold Withers and sister Della Withers Calloway.

Viola Mary Sultemeier Lindig of Hye, Tx, born on September 27, 1923, passed away on April 22, 2008 at the age of 84.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, eight brothers and sisters, and her husband, Clifton Lindig of over 55 years. She is survived by one brother, Otto Sultemeier, one sister, Emma Lou Mohle, her two sons, Lester Lee Lindig and wife Karen Lindig of Horseshoe Bay, Tx and Bill Lindig and wife Peggy Lindig of Johnson City.

I know you have heard many times about what a beautiful place Blanco is. The rivers, the deer along the road, the fresh air, the stars at night and small town hominess. How many times in today’s day & time do we hear about beautiful people?

Every two seconds someone in America needs blood, including patients across south Texas. Blood is especially needed during the summer season because schools are out and families are on vacation, therefore impacting the community blood supply. The hour that it takes to donate is a lifetime for someone in need.
There’s an additional incentive to donate blood.

Burnet County Sheriff’s Office and Hill Country Area Crime Stoppers are asking for the public’s assistance for any information on a theft of 10 dirt bikes–9 Hondos and 1 Yamaha–also taken were 10 motorcycle helmets. The theft occurred sometime between the hours of 8:30pm on Sunday, April 20, 2008, to 7:30am on Monday, April 21, 2008, from a summer dirt bike youth camp off of FM 243 East of Bertram.

The Blanco FFA has spent the past two weeks competing in district and area competitions. With 16 schools competing in the Hill District FFA and over 100 schools representing the Area VII FFA, all judging competitions have proven to be extremely competitive.
On April 2nd, the Blanco FFA Dairy Team, consisting of Austin Smith, Tucker Edmondson, Aaron Thomson, and Sam Ruiz, traveled to Tarleton State University to compete in the Area VII Dairy Contest.

Prom night is probably the most anticipated night of the year for teens and one of the most dreaded by their parents. Although most teens think they know everything about how to stay safe, parents know otherwise. And, according to safety experts, it will take more than just talk to ensure a safe evening for all.

The Tejas Art Club sponsored an art contest for Blanco High School students. Twenty-two students created wonderful pieces of art to enter the contest. The judging was held at the regular meeting of the Tejas Art Club, Thursday April 17. Although it was hard to choose, first place went to Melinda Hansen for her pencil drawing of two alpacas.

The entire Blanco First grade was able to visit Sea World in San Antonio on Tuesday, April 22. It was a fantastic experience for all the students and their parents.
The day was special because it was closed to the public and open exclusively for groups from 9:30-1:30pm. The day was listed as "Instructional Field Experience"

The Blanco Softball team defeated the Ozona Lions 17-3 to claim the Bi-district championship this past Thursday.

How do you celebrate after just playing your friends? On Tuesday, April 22, the two Major League girls softball teams from Blanco played one another. The Queens of Swing beat the Angels with Attitude in a close game that ended 8-6. The two teams then celebrated together out on the field in traditional style.

After starting the season 0 and 4, and just one year from a third place finish in the district, the Blanco Panther Junior Varsity Baseball Team is back on top having won the District 8-AA Championship. For the season, the Panthers finished on a roll having won 11 of their final 12 games to finish the year 11 and 5.
