Although Dr. Jon Buck Ford is well-known to parents and students at Blanco Middle School, he will be wearing a new hat this year as superintendent of the Blanco Independent School District, replacing Cliff Gardner, who resigned in June. A native of Port Neches, Texas, Ford received a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education from Lamar University in 1977 and a Master’s degree in School Administration in 1979.

In the aftermath of a recent traffic fatality at the intersection of Highway 281 and Blanco Road, local resident Anna Barker, supported by several neighbors, spoke to the governing body of Blanco at their regular meeting on August 12 in support of a traffic signal. The Blanco Lions Club will sponsor a community effort to help the kids who will be starting school in a couple of weeks. The Blanco ISD will provide us with a bus on Saturday, August 23rd. The bus will be parked on the Square across from the bank (north side on the courthouse) from 9:00a.m.

Manuel Telles is suffering from serious injuries after losing his step from atop his two-story home located off of west Highway 46. He is currently being taken care of at University Hospital in San Antonio. At this time, his condition is not good. He is a diabetic and is now paralized from the waist down. He is the nephew of Mario Chalico.

The Blanco County Realtors toured four properties in Johnson City, and two properties outside of the City. We started with a two bedroom home followed by a four bedroom home – both in the City and the prices were a reflection of the number of bedrooms. Next we went out in the country to view a weekend home on four acres with fantastic views.

Blanco Middle School was rated “Recognized” by the Texas Education Agency in its release of accountability ratings last Friday. Blanco Elementary, Blanco High School, and Blanco ISD received “Acceptable” ratings. Hazel Hanvey was born in North Mississippi and grew up in the Mississippi delta. She was the middle daughter of Joe and Frances Logan. Growing up on a small farm with a loving family, she played in the school band and sang in chorus. Hazel always loved art because her older sister was an accomplished artist, even in high school.

Observations herein were gathered from “hither and yawn.” With Beijing’s “smogginess” roughly six times that of Los Angeles’, it’s a good bet that the “air condition” is a major topic of conversation among Olympic participants. Two women, reportedly members of the USA’s curling team, offered hair spray when they heard two others bemoaning a “bad hair day.” What a misunderstanding!

Bernice Enderlin Domsch of Poteet passed away on Tuesday, August 12th at her residence at the age of 78 years. Bernice Domsch is survived by one daughter, one son: Donna Elder of New Braunfels and David Domsch of Poteet. Graveside services for Elvera Pehl, age 83, of Austin will be held Friday, August 22 at 2:00p.m. at the Blanco Cemetery, Blanco, Texas with Alfred Pehl officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Crofts Funeral Home of Blanco. She was a member of the congregation of the University United Methodist Church in Austin since 1958. Elvera was born in Blanco on December 28, 1924 to Alfred and Clara Haufler Pehl at their farm and ranch home on the Rocky Road.

Upshaw signs with SAU August 17, 1988 Robert Upshaw, a 5’8", 175 pound running back from Blanco, Texas has been signed by Southern Arkansas University Head Football Coach Rob Hicklin to play for the Muleriders. Upshaw, brother of Cleveland Indians star Willie Upshaw, was named to the AA All-State Football and Baseball teams while playing for Blanco. Coach Hicklin is looking forward to having the 1988.
