Stonewall, TX – Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park announced the official opening of the LBJ Ranch home of President Lyndon B. and “Lady Bird” Johnson on Wednesday, August 27, the 100th anniversary of President Johnson’s birth. The public viewed his 1960s office in the house, which had been restored to its appearance during the presidential years with the original furnishings and personal belongings that he used.

The Blanco Panther volleyball team is off to a strong start this season. Austin Regents: L 16-25, 17-25 Medina Valley: L 20 - 25, 15-25 JC: W 25-23, 25-18 Eagle Pass: L 21-25, 25-27 Llano: L 16-25 15-25 Their record to date is 5-8 with the majority of losses coming to 4A and 5A schools. They have been playing very good competition, having attended two 4A tournaments and they will attend a 5A private school tournament this week.

The 2008 Blanco Panther football season began with a bang as the Panthers dominated Canyon Lake for the season’s first win. Blanco looked impressive on both sides of the ball totaling over 550 yards in offense, while the defense would allow just 217 yards and force five turnovers. Offensively, the Panthers were almost perfect in the first half scoring on all six of its possessions.

The Blanco Ranch Roundup, formerly known as Heritage Days, will be September 26 & 27 at Yett Memorial Park! This year will feature educational activities for school age children on Friday, and a barbeque dinner before the Homecoming game that night, for $6 a plate. Saturday will be a full day of western fun (10am-1am) with a cover of $10 per person at the gate.

Keith- Prom Night slashed its way into our hearts last week with the terrifying scenario of an escaped serial killer coming to finish the job at none other than a high school prom. I don’t want to give too much away like Noel did last week with Penelope (she told the entire story), but this movie will have you jumping in a few areas and is relatively good compared to some of the other lower budget horror flicks as of late.

AUSTIN - The Office of the State Auditor on Aug. 28 released an audit report on the Texas Department of Transportation’s Financial Forecasting and Fund Allocation. The Blanco Bowling Club represented Comal County in the Senior Men’s Tri-County bowling tournament on August 17. The 9 pin Tri-County bowling clubs are from the three counties of Comal (which Blanco isa part of), Bexar, and Guadalupe. Tournaments are held at each county, and the winner represents that county at the Tri-County competition.

Quilting as an art form will be the focus of the Blanco Library during the month of September. The public is invited to a Brown Bag Luncheon on September 10th, which will also be the opening of the Storybook Quilt Project Exhibit. Paula Conley, president of the Wimberley Valley Quilt Guild, will introduce the exhibit of storybook-inspired quilts designed by guild members.

Stonewall, TX —Visitors to Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park’s LBJ Ranch will have the opportunity to see a unique exhibit of Vietnam-era aircraft and meet with the pilots who flew them on Saturday, September 6 when the International Bird Dog Association (IBDA) teams up with the Johnson family and the National Park Service to coordinate an invitational fly in and viewing. The aircraft, after landing on the private LBJ Ranch airstrip, will be on display from 10 a.m.

Stonewall, TX - Trinity Lutheran Church in Stonewall is extending an invitation to the public to join in their annual Rally Day and Barbecue celebration this Sunday, September 7, 2008. Now is a good time for evening stargazers to view four of the five naked-eye planets. The easiest is Jupiter which dominates the southern sky in the early evening. Far outshining all stars, Jupiter is the third brightest night sky object behind only the Moon and Venus. While Jupiter appears as a bright star to the naked eye, most binoculars can reveal its disc-like shape.

Labor Day weekend proved to be very successful for some local FFA members, as they competed and placed very high at the annual Kendall County Fair steer show in Boerne. Senior Katie Baker would lead the way winning champion honors in both the British and Chianina divisions, while also taking reserve champion with her Maine-Anjou.

Pedernales Electric is now accepting entries in the 2009 Youth Tour Contest. All participants will receive a 64-megabyte flash drive just for entering. PEC’s Green Works initiative and the 100th birthday of Lyndon B. Johnson are the inspiration for this year’s contest.
