The town of Blanco celebrate along side our Heroes this past Saturday. The Veteran’s Day Parade had over 70 entries and plenty of folks gathered around the courthouse to show their respect for those men and women that have served our country. Veterans were pulled around the courthouse on floats as community members shouted their thanks and waved their flags of red, white and blue letting everyone know that we are all proud to be an American.

World War II is more to me than just a few words thrown out by a history teacher. It’s not something I always liked talking about with all the bad memories, but most of us who served our country felt the same way. It wasn’t until recent years that I felt a need to share my story.

These are thoughts of a yesteryear, over 60 years ago in 1941, when I joined the U.S. Air Corps; now called the U.S. Air Force. I was a dude wrangler in Bandera, Texas when I signed up as an Aviator Cadet and was sent to Tulare, California for my primary training in the PT Steerman open cockpit aircraft.

At its regular meeting on November 10, the governing body of Blanco approved several measures to promote commerce and economic development through ties with the Chamber of Commerce. Council members heard an explanation from chamber director Julie Dill on the advantages of joining the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Go Texan program.

Background: On Wednesday, November 5th, a team involved in the reorganization of Blanco EMS, presented to officials of the Department of State Health Services the many organizational and operating changes adopted by Blanco EMS since Mark McMain resigned on July 31st, 2008. Mechelle Salmon, Director, outlined the organizational operating and financial systems and procedures that have been implemented to ensure compliance with DSHS requirements and standards.

About 66 teenagers crowd into the front room of the The Second Mile, the local youth recreation center and coffee shop on the corner of Fifth and Pecan. They're loud and excited, making the most of the opportunity to hang out and play pool, ping pong, foos ball or air hockey on a Monday night in Blanco.

With all due respect, I had given up on The Hulk after the demise of a movie they made three or four years ago, but here they come back and actually make The Hulk worth our while. AUSTIN - America voted and Barack Obama, the junior Democratic U.S. senator from Illinois, was elected the 44th president of the United States on Nov. 4. The Texas vote went against the grain, producing a 12-point margin (55.5 to 43.8 percent) in favor of U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. You probably already know that Habitat volunteers, in cooperation with new homeowners, build homes for low income families. You may not be as familiar with a new program to families in making crucial repairs to their existing homes called “A Brush with Kindness.” The mission of this program is to enhance and beautify the exterior of homes of qualifying low income homeowners.

Master Gardeners of Blanco County will be offering a 2009 Master Gardener Course after the first of the New Year. Our organization is very active in providing horticultural information to residents of Blanco County with education being our primary goal. Master Gardeners are volunteers that work with the AgriLife Extension Service and its agent, Todd Swift.

Johnson City's traditional Living Nativity Christmas pageant is nearing its 50th birthday. It began 40-something years ago as a "tableau vivant", with costumed actors posing in fixed positions, representing the characters in the blended Nativity stories from the Gospels. The performers would set up in the space between the First United Methodist Church sanctuary and parsonage.

When in 1857 the S.S. Central America went down in a fierce Atlantic storm about two hundred miles east of Charleston, South Carolina, the costs of this sinking were immense. This luxury steamship, loaded with loaded people, made rich during the California gold rush, was headed home carrying three tons of gold; so in addition to the death toll (420 people), there was an enormous financial loss in this tragedy that brought down many banks and launched a national economic panic.

A month after Hurricane Ike brought devastation to the Texas Gulf Coast, TxDOT repair crews are back home in Central Texas reflecting on their mission to clean up roads and highways damaged by the storm. The Blanco Library has been selected as one of only forty libraries nationwide to host “Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery,” a touring exhibit developed to mark the International Year of Astronomy in 2009. The 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams concluded their seasons with victories over Johnson City on Monday, October 27. Winning their final games, the Blanco Middle School teams ended the season undefeated, claiming the title of District Champs. Eddie Calzoncit came home with a MSBL World Series Championship title for the 35+ Central division. Eddie played with the San Antonio Bulldogs in the 2008 MSBL World Series in Phoenix, Arizona during the week of October 26 to November 2. There were eleven teams for this division from around the United States playing in the week long tournament and the SA Bulldogs remained undefeated.

Doris and Robert Rahm of Hye, their children, spouses, and grandchildren flew to Las Vegas on October 15 for the wedding of their grandson Justin Lee Rahm of Garland, Texas and his fiancee Dawn Summer Harahan of Placentia, California. The Texas Department of Insurance recently launched a new effort to get Farmers Insurance Group and State Farm to lower their home insurance rates. The department is seeking $300 million in premium refunds, plus 10 percent interest. This ongoing debate serves to remind us that insurance, while a necessary fact of life for homeowners, can get expensive.
