Blanco's 10th Annual Trash-Off Day and 3rd Annual Blanco River Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, April 4 from 8:00am to 12 noon. Local residents are urged to take part by taking unwanted items to the city yard on Jones Avenue, next to the recycling center. Just about anything will be accepted except tires, batteries, electronics, chemicals, motor oil and cooking oil.

Kinky Friedman, Texas humorist, singer, songwriter, novelist, and politician, will be on stage here Saturday, April 4th, at the Old Blanco County Courthouse for an afternoon appearance at 1:00pm. Friedman will be the sole attraction of the annual Texas Authors’ Day event sponsored by Friends of the Blanco Library. He will read from his latest book and take questions from the audience.

The Texas Retired Teachers Association, TRTA, and the retired teachers of Blanco County have a meeting scheduled to consider reorganizing the Blanco County Retired Teachers Unit of TRTA. The meeting will be held on April 6 at 10:00am at the new Johnson City Library. All retired school personnel are invited to attend.

AUSTIN - Through the week of March 23-27, the House Appropriations Committee and its various subcommittees toiled away at producing HB 1, a state budget for fiscal years 2010-2011. Hopes are that the budget bill may reach the House floor for debate in mid-April. The Blanco County Realtors viewed properties in the North County, on Friday March 20th. The tour started at the new Johnson City Library with breakfast provided by Johnson City Library. Two homes were viewed in Johnson City and a home in Round Mountain, a hill top home with great views; and last but not least, a home way out in the country.

The Tejanitos Art Club proudly presented their art work to family and friends at the Blanco Library on Saturday, March 28 at 2:00pm. The art students meet every Thursday at 4:00pm in the Blanco Library, and under the direction of Olga Ybarra, work with oils to create masterpieces. The students paintings will be displayed at Rainbird Art Gallery. Lily Porter was chosen from among all of the students for her interpretation of the dragon in their example art work.

The hilltop church just outside of town, Unity of Wimberley, has hired a temporary minister for the coming year. Rev. Ellen Debenport’s first Sunday will be April 5. The church currently draws about 100 people on Sundays, plus several dozen children, and offers activities throughout the week. Debenport was previously senior minister at the 1,000-member Unity Church of Dallas and resigned at the end of 2007 to write.

David Chick Lowe passed away February 18, 2009 at his home on the Chick Ranch in Blanco, Texas. David was born in San Antonio, Texas on October 5, 1932. He lived 76 wonderful years. At David’s request, he was cremated; in a beautiful celebration of his life, his ashes were spread on the Chick Ranch he loved so dearly.

Georgia Anna Moore-Bailey beloved mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother was born on February 1, 1920 in Curryville, Missouri. She passed away on March 28, 2009 in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 89 years. The funeral service will be held at Bulverde Baptist Church with Reverend Richard Loser officiating on April 1, 2009.

Lois Ophelia Elsey passed away on March 25, 2009 at the age of 93 years. She was born February 3, 1916 in Kendall County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Raymond Elsey and her parents, William and Tennessee Sorrell. Lois is survived by two sons Terry and wife Bonnye and Bill Elsey.

Dear Editor, The last time I was in Blanco, I could not step into a building without someone whispering behind my back. Every time I made a step, people would look at me, wondering what I was planning next, as if I was planning to do something horrible. While I was raised my whole life in the town, it had become somewhere I wanted to get out of.

Dear Editor, The catastrophe in Washington D.C. continues to worsen every day. I feel like I should be running up and down every street yelling alarm or ringing a bell. Constitutional government is gone. The Democrat controlled Congress commits one legislative atrocity after another, following a President who is on a holy mission to destroy our capitalistic system. Worst of all is the infantile gurgling of approval that continues from the nincompoops who elected them.

Each year the San Antonio Livestock show provides the opportunity for FFA, 4-H and FCCLA members to enhance their leadership skills by allowing students to serve as tour guides for the School Tours Program. It is the responsibity of the FFA students to lead the youth through the educational exhibits that teach about the different phases of the agricultural industry.

The Blanco Little League kicked off the new season on March 28 at Yett Park. Starting with an AirEvac Lifeteam helicopter landing on the softball team, the day was filled with games. Manny Gallegos, chief Medic threw out the first pitch of the season with Angel Williams catching. Through out the day, hundreds of kids recited the Little League pledge, promising to always try their best, work hard and be a good sport.

Blanco 14 Navarro 3 The Panthers defeated Navarro 14-3 in 6 innings. Blake West picked up the win as he went three innings, struck out four and gave up only two hits. Keaton Dodd went three innings in relief. John Pepper was perfect at the plate going 4 for 4 with a dinger.

The Panther softball team opened district play with a 7-6 win against the Johnson City Eagles Tuesday night. The Eagles struck first, scoring one run in the top of the inning, but it did not take long for the Panthers to answer in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own.

The Panther Softball team traveled to Comfort last Friday to take on the Lady Deer. The Panthers came out swinging, producing three triples, six doubles, and seven singles scoring 16 runs on 16 hits. Defensively, Rachel Calzoncit struck out nine, allowing only three hits. According to Coach Seales, the ladies had the best offensive and defensive game thus far.

If you have not gathered the items in your homes and yards that you would like to dispose of, you still have 3 more days to get them loaded in a pickup or on a trailer to take to the Blanco City Yard on Jones Road.

Gentle readers: This is to publicly say HAPPY BIRTHDAY (again) to ADA COOLEY! I wasn't able to get to her party on Saturday but wanted to say that I heard it was well attended and a good time was had by all. The other birthday party was for LEONA CALHOUN and a good time was had by all at that party as well - Miz Leona is a lovely age also. March 27 was a red-letter day for birthdays - not only my mom, but Mary Ann Weaver, Charley Pemberton, Christian Saylor, and Amira Allen.
