Sometimes, we believe we understand what is going on around us, when we truly do not have all the facts at hand. We act with the best intent, but lack all the pieces to the puzzle.
As I promised when elected to council, and later to be your Mayor, I have encouraged participation by the citizens in the council meetings, and promised an open door to my fellow Blanconians.

At around 9:30am on Tuesday morning, the driver of this truck left 13th Street, narrowly missed a group of trees and ran into the building located at 13th and Elm. The driver was air lifted, but the extent of the injuries was unknown as of press time.
There were two people inside the building, however, they were not in the room that was impacted by the collision and were not injured.

Being the Blanco County Fair and Rodeo Queen has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Throughout the year, I have had wonderful opportunities to meet new people and promote our Great Fair. I have participated in events such as festivals, parades, and The Blanco County Wild Game Dinner.

With temperatures still reaching record highs, Blanco students head back to campus to start practice.
The high school volleyball and football teams, as well as the band ,started their annual two-a-day sessions Monday, practicing in the morning and in the early evening. They avoid practicing during the hottest part of the day, between 10am and 4pm.

No local post office locations appear on the July 28 list of nearly 700 potential candidates being considered by the Postal Regulatory Commission for closure.
Thirty six post offices located in Texas are included on the list of possible closures, including one each in Dallas, Irving, Lewisville and Arlington; two in Lubbock; four in Austin, El Paso and Houston; eight in Ft.

On July 16, 2009, Kamryn Anne Gaskamp came into this world weighing 7lbs 11oz and was 19 ½ inches long. She is welcomed by her big sister Kaylin Gaskamp and big brother Kolton Gaskamp and her mother and father, Collin and Brian Gaskamp.
Also welcoming her are maternal grandparents Debby and James Caudell and great grandma Juanita Smith of Blanco.

Colt Walton Zercher was born on July 17, 2009 at 7:58pm at Stone Oak Medical Hospital in San Antonio. He weighed 6 lbs. 12 oz. and was 19 inches long. He was welcomed by his parents, Clayton and Sara Zercher, and his great-great-grandmother, Paula Zercher.

The Blanco County Team Roping will now be held on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at the Blanco County fairgrounds. The books will open at 11:00, close at 12:00 and roping starts at 12:30. The roping will be a draw pot format. The entry will be $80 for four drawn runs and you can enter twice for a total of eight runs.

Thin Ice is the fifth movie in the Jesse Stone series and is just as entertaining as the last four. Thin Ice stars Tom Selleck as the no nonsense police chief in small town Paradise, Massachusetts. Thin Ice, like the other Jesse Stone movies, is easy to watch, very entertaining and only about an hour and a half long.

AUSTIN --- In mid-July, Texas AgriLife Extension Service estimated agricultural losses at about $4 billion. And now, nearly 80 counties are in a state of emergency due to severe drought conditions ruining crops and endangering livestock.

It will be a busy weekend at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds in Fredericksburg on Saturday and Sunday, August 8 and 9, when two days of live pari-mutuel horse racing are combined with a wine tasting and livestock judging. The gates open at 11am and post time is 1pm for the live pari-mutuel racing on Saturday and Sunday.

Now’s the time to start preparing your entries for the Blanco County Fair Exhibit Hall. Entries will be accepted from 10am to 7pm on Thursday, August 13. There is no fee to enter. Entry forms are available at the Exhibit Hall upon check-in or at the Texas AgriLife Extension Service office, located in the Blanco County Courthouse Annex at 200 N.

On Saturday, Rebecca Howerton and I visited with Stephen Lackey. Stephen is attempting to find descendants of Texas Rangers, who are buried in Blanco Cemetery, Miller Creek Cemetery, and Rocky Creek Cemetery. If you have a relative who served in the capacity of a Texas Ranger, Stephen wants to know about your relative.

I just wanted to give folks an update on the call for help I wrote about two weeks ago for Native American prisoner Leonard Peltier.
On last Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 9 a.m. Central time, Native American prisoner Leonard Peltier had his parole hearing in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. It was Leonard’s first parole hearing in 15 years and he met all the criteria to be paroled.

Dear Editor,
This letter is in reference to the recent ignorant and cowardly act of defacing public property at the Johnson City Recycling Center, wherein a person or persons unknown painted racial slurs, swastikas, and KKK on a recycling bin. By virtue of what was done, this action constitutes a hate crime under both state and federal statutes.

In the process of destroying our Federal Government, the reach and the imagination of the Democrats is amazing. For example, the billion dollar catastrophe called Cash for Clunkers. I was amazed this Sunday morning to hear Chairman Charles Wrangle call the program a success because the program had exhausted in four days the budget Congress had projected to last four months, or until November.

Blanco’s summer squad baseball team recently completed their summer schedule, winning the Hill Country League Championship with a 10 and 2 record. Blanco competed against Llano, Wimberley, Bandera, Harper, and two teams from Fredericksburg. Blanco went 2 and 1 in the final two weeks of the season to wrap up the title.

With school athletic programs gearing up for a new season, Hill Country Memorial Hospital will offer a free sports medicine seminar for middle school and high school athletes and their parents.
The seminar is set for Wednesday, August 19, from 7:00 to 8:30pm at Hill Country Memorial Wellness Center in Fredericksburg at 1006 S.

Blanco I Peewee Little League team, which had it post-season party rained out last Friday, has re-schedules it for Saturday, August 11.
Swimming will begin at 2:00p.m., with picnic to follow.
