On February 9, County Commissioners accepted the resignation of Mike Pippen from the South Blanco County Emergency Services District board. Martha Miller will replace Mr. Pippen for his unexpired term through December of 2010. Also approved for membership on the board were Theresa Turner and Kelly Dowdy. Two Blanco High School Seniors joined the ranks of hundreds of seniors last Wednesday, February 3 when they signed letters of intent to play football at Texas A&M-Kingsville. Layton Dworaczyk, a 5-10, 190-pound running back/safety, earned second team All-State 2A honors at running back as a senior. Based on a number of state-mandated criteria, Blanco ISD achieved a Recognized rating from the TEA for the 2009 school year. Curriculum Specialist Kathy Anderson reported to trustees that the district received five Gold Performance Acknowledgments for achievement in these areas: College-Ready Students and SAT/ACT results at Blanco High School; and based on spring TAKS scores for grades 3-11, Commended for Writing, Social Studies, and Comparable Improvement in Mathematics.

The University Interscholastic League has made sports life interesting for the Blanco Panthers, their coaches and fans for the next two years. The UIL biennial realignment for school district athletics was announced February 1. With Blanco located on the geographic dividing line between Regions 1 and 4, the UIL placed Blanco in Region 4 for football and Region 1 for basketball and all other sports.

The Third Annual Father Daughter Dance is all set for Saturday night! A fun-filled night is planned at Gem of the Hills.An evening of fun music and entertainment will be provided by DJ Ronnie Batchelor. For the third year, local photo-artist Willard Gibbons will be donating his talents taking photos that will be available for purchase.

A free class on getting started in family history research will be offered Saturday, February 20, by the Genealogical Society of Kendall County. This class is a pre-requisite to take the seven-week advanced genealogy course, which will be given by Harry and Mary Alice Dell, starting March 18. Blanco, TX - Each year bird watchers from coast to coast become “citizen scientists” by taking part in the Great Backyard Bird Count and collecting data on winter bird populations. This year’s GBBC will take place from February 12 – 15. Blanco State Park will be celebrating the bird count with bird walks, classes, and children’s activities for experienced and first-time birders alike.

The American Cancer Society, Relay For Life is what we are talking about. Blanco County will be hosting its 6th annual Relay For Life on Saturday, April 24 at the Johnson City Football Stadium. Relay is a fun-filled event for the whole family. We honor the cancer survivors with a dinner and a survivor/caregiver lap.

Blanco Lions Club is always on the look out for new members. Meetings are held every first and third Thursday at 6:30 p.m. They are always fun and are held at Riley’s Steakhouse in the meeting room on the right. New members are desperately needed to help keep our club alive.

Homestead Exemptions A homestead exemption lowers the property taxes on your home by lowering its taxable value. Anyone who owned a home on January 1st and used it as their primary residence on that date is entitled to a general homestead exemption, and it does not matter if your home is a house, condominium, or mobile home. If you are 65 years of age or older or you are disabled, you are entitled to an additional exemption.

Well, I've lived in the scenic and beautiful Texas Hill Country for 16 months now and have built on my experiences as a Jewish woman. My job at Sac-n-Pac in Spring Branch has greatly enriched my experiences, which include getting to know many folks in the community, feeling more rooted here and actually meeting Jewish people in the Hill Country.

On Sunday, February 7, 2010, the family of Blanco Cowboy Church celebrated their first ten-year milestone. At 9:00 a.m. the Adult Discipleship Class and the Teenage Round Pen Class met and studied God’s Word. Before the worship service began at 10:00am, everyone met around the coffee pot and enjoyed fresh donuts, cinnamon rolls, and great fellowship. Announcements were made and God’s Vision for Blanco Cowboy Church was shared.

Lillian Anna Weber Cox went to be with the Lord on Monday February 8, 2010. She was born November 7, 1921 in Blanco, Texas to August and Olga Weber. She grew up there, graduating from high school in 1938. During WWII, she lived in New Branufels and worked at Randolf Field in San Antonio, doing her part for the war effort.

The Blanco FFA Chapter was recently recognized at the National Cattle Breeders’ Association Convention in San Antonio for their outstanding performance in the National Cattle Judging Contest. This marks the second year for the NCBA Convention to host this national competition. In the Novice Division, Asher and Carly Haack, along with Kelton and Kolby Marek, would finish in first place winning the Novice Division National Championship.

The Varsity Lady Panthers tallied two district victories this week, overwhelming Brooks Academy 61-27 on February 2 and outscoring the Harper Lady Longhorns 49-46 on February 5. In the Brooks game the Panthers played a slow 1st quarter, leading only 11-9 at the break. The girls found their rhythm in the 2nd quarter, finishing the half 30-17.
