The Wildlife Viewing Station at the Blanco State Park is officially completed and open for use by park patrons and visitors. The completion of the structure was celebrated with a private dedication ceremony held on Monday, May 24. The structure has been dedicated to long-time Blanco resident Jean Evans. Pedernales Electric is hosting a member forum June 8 at 6 p.m. at PEC’s E. Babe Smith Headquarters Building in Johnson City. The forum will give members a chance to hear proposals and weigh in on proposed changes to the Cooperative’s community giving policies and programs, including the creation of a member advisory group to recommend how PEC’s Board of Directors distributes funds to area nonprofit organizations.

Twin Sisters Hermann Sons Lodge # 138 appreciates Blanco and the surrounding communities for helping with their Join Hands project and their Hugs from Home project. The Lodge was able to donate non–perishable food items to the Blanco Good Samaritan Center. Hilary and Mary Huser took the items to the center where they were well received.

My wife was driving one morning when we passed through Silver City, New Mexico. I noticed that the flag in front of an elementary school was flying upside down. I asked my wife to turn around so that we could find out what was happening at that school. I entered the school office and was greeted pleasantly by a receptionist who asked if she could help me.

AUSTIN — The state Senate Education and Higher Education committees met in joint session May 24 to get input on the effectiveness and scope of the state’s dual-course credit program that enables students to take high school courses that earn college credit. Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park invites the public to view a classic Hollywood western movie on Saturday, June 5 at 8:30 p.m. by attending a screening of Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. The movie will be projected onto an 18 by 25 foot outdoor screen that includes a professional sound system.

The Kendalia Community Club will hold its annual Homecoming on Sunday, June 27, 2010 at the Kendalia Community Club Center. The Center is located in Kendalia at the corner of Crabapple Road and Hwy 473. Starting at 11:30 and lasting until 1:30, a traditional barbecue meal with all the sides will be served.

The second annual Blanco Mission Trip will take place the week of June 27 to July 2, 2010 in Blanco. Through the efforts of Northern Hill United Methodist Church in San Antonio, Blanco United Methodist Church and Trinity Lutheran Church of Blanco, we are providing a week for mission-minded youth to work in three areas of need in Blanco.

Depending on the source and motivation, these can range from an economic boost to a total bust, depending on how the event is managed and what resources are expended to make it happen.

Bonnie W. Eisenschmidt passed away May 25, 2010, at the age of 86. She was born in Blanco, Texas, on November 26, 1923, the youngest child of Herb and Maggie Wier. A long-time resident of San Antonio, Bonnie worked as a bookkeeper and legal secretary. She enjoyed traveling and after retiring took several trips sponsored by Alamo Heights United Methodist Church, where she was a member and volunteer in various capacities for over 40 years. This school year’s Blanco Elementary 5th grade students enjoyed participating in the 15th (more or less) annual overnight trip to Port Aransas and Corpus. As usual, they enjoyed observing dolphins and handling sea life netted from the intercostal canal on our 2 hour boat trip. The kids ate at Mr.Gattis Thursday night in Corpus then finished up their trip with a visit to the Texas State Aquarium on Friday before posing for their traditional photo in front of the USS Lexington. Champion Baseball Team played in their first tournament this season on May 1 and 2. These young men have had several rainout tournaments and were ready to finally compete. The Champion Baseball team played in the Austin Select Baseball tournament Battle at the Capital II, which was played in Manchaca on Saturday.

Hill Country Memorial Wellness Center’s first of 10 summer day camp sessions will center around skills and drills for football and cheerleading campers. Set for the week of June 7 through June 11, the camp will take place at Lady Bird Johnson Park for children ages five through 12. It will include basic techniques such as reaction drills for football players and proper motions for cheerleaders.

Closing is the final step of a real estate transaction, where ownership of the property is officially transferred and money changes hands. The days leading up to closing can stressful for everyone – buyers may be a bit nervous about making such a commitment and both parties, particularly sellers, hope that some unforeseen last-minute glitch doesn’t prevent the transaction from happening. Although few closings are completely derailed by major setbacks, it can happen.
