At the regular meeting of the Blanco County Commissioners Court on June 8, the implementation of a burn ban was considered. Because of recent rains and the prospects of more wet stuff in the future, commissioners were unanimous in not implementing any kind of burn ban at this time. This weekend, June 11-13, the square in Blanco will fill with the buzz of vendors and shoppers from all over, coming to enjoy the booths and sights and sounds of the 6th Annual Lavender Festival. Hosted by the Blanco Chamber of Commerce, the festival promotes Blanco’s trademark crop, lavender. The weekend will be filled with activities, including speakers on all things lavender, musicians in Bindseil Park, wine and beer tasting, and great food.

The 100 Years Family Land Heritage Certificate of Honor was presented to Burchett Heritage Farm by Commissioner Todd Staples, Texas Department of Agriculture, at the 35th Annual Family Land Heritage Ceremony on June 3, 2010. Burchett Heritage Farm is located 11 miles southeast of Johnson City on Middle Creek Road (CR 410).

Juneteenth will be celebrated at the Peyton Colony SchooI grounds located on Peyton Colony Road, off of Rural Route 165, Blanco County, Texas. We will be using the facilities at Mt. Horeb Baptist Church again this year. It will be held on June 19, 2010, and will begin at 10:00am, with food being served at 1:00pm.

On June 11-13, local photographer, Alexandria Penshorn, will be having her second annual Photo Gallery Show and Sale. This bright 15-year-old was raised in Blanco and is currently a freshman at Blanco High School. Over the past eight years, Miss Penshorn has been working on and improving her photography skills by attending classes, entering juried shows, and showing and selling her work at local art galleries. Blanco United Methodist Church is hosting its 2010 VBS starting Sunday, June 13 to Thursday, June17 from 5:30-8:00pm for children from ages four years old to children entering 5th grade (exiting 4th). This year’s theme is Hero Headquarters, and is meant to show the children that no matter their size, they too can be a hero with God’s help.

Instead of my usual article this week, I felt it was important to address a rumor that’s been going around for a long time now, about Peyton Colony and Mt. Horeb Baptist Church having the presence of ghosts! It seems that some people have actually created some web sites that depict ghosts out here in Peyton Colony, and even show pictures of ghosts in front of the church.

Have you heard about the doctor who printed his prescriptions in large, perfect letters... .no pharmacist could read them. The lack of Bible knowledge among so many is not a matter of lack of clarity on God's part, but a lack of effort by us. Bible reading and comprehension of the truths therein is something for everyone.

Blanco Cowboy Church opened the chute gate on the first of three Youth PlayDay Series for the summer. Young cowboys and cowgirls attended Sunday morning Worship Services followed by a covered dish lunch before mounting their horses and gathering at the Church Arena for instructions and prayer. They participated in the following four events: Straightaway Barrels, Cloverleaf Barrels, Pole Bending, and Key Hole Race.

Wilma Irene Luersen, 97, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2010 in Johnson City. She was born in Wimberley, TX to Leonard Wagner and Annie Mae Champion Wagner. Dear Editor, This Friday, I will travel to Dallas to attend the State Convention of the Republican Party as a delegate from Blanco County. My hope is to find a group who want to transform the Republican Platform into a candidate’s pledge to bring about ten changes in government - similar to The 1994 Contract with America.

After falling to the Weimar Wildcats in the state quarter-finals two weeks ago, the Blanco Panthers ended one of their most successful baseball seasons ever. As a team, the Panthers finished in the top three of the record book in twelve different categories, while tying or setting new marks for doubles (83) and games played (36).

We hope that you had a special Memorial Day. The weather was perfect for boating and families enjoying themselves. Now it’s time to get to serious yard work. This past Tuesday, June 1, was productive for us. Armando Pena, Barbara Dowdy, Ruby Duecker, and I planted Katie Ruella and added New Gold Lantanas to the City Hall front yard, as we lost several this past winter.
