For the second time, representatives of Kendall County came before the BISD trustees at their regular monthly meeting to request that the historic Kendalia schoolhouse be deeded back to Kendall County. The first Blanco School opened 126 years ago on October 27, 1884. Saturday, June 19, a class reunion was held honoring Blanco graduates from 1930 to the present at the former Blanco High School cafetorium. Panthers were contacted through letters, phone calls and even Facebook inviting them to attend this memorable event held every 5 years.
The response to the invitation was tremendous with 427 pre-registered graduates and 100 more Blanco alumni registering on Saturday.

Blanco, the Lavender Capital of Texas, successfully celebrated all things lavender a couple weeks ago with a huge crowd of Blanco residents and visitors from all across Texas, during the 6th Annual Blanco Lavender Festival on the grounds of the Old Blanco County Courthouse. The event is sponsored by the Texas Department of Agriculture's Go Texan program -- "taking Texas bragging rights to new heights"

While it probably went unnoticed by most folks, Blanco took a major step towards determining the future of the county last year. The Blanco County Economic Development Committee formed and filed for a 501(c)(3) designation as the Blanco County Economic Development Corporation (BCEDC).
This was a significant move. The economic development landscape in Texas is extremely competitive these days.

British Major General Edward Braddock was determined to retake Fort Duquesne from the French. In 1754 both the Brits and the French claimed the territory lying along the Ohio River. Because of his knowledge of the area General Braddock called upon 23-year old George Washington to guide his troops into that wild and largely uncharted domain.
General Braddock commanded a force of 2,000 men including 1,400 British regulars and 450 Virginia militiamen.

AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry on June 15 kicked off Salute to Texas Week at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, welcoming visitors to the Texas-themed U.S.A. National Pavilion.
The governor and members of a Texas delegation also hosted a forum for Chinese businesses to promote the advantages of locating in Texas and how to do business in the state.

Sometimes it seems like adults forget how to make art, but not children! Their art is colorful, smart, and very, very creative. That’s why Uptown Blanco Art Center is sponsoring a special art show for the talented students in their June summer camp. The campers are creating art work based on Picasso, Matisse, and other modern artists; and using painting, drawing, collage, and ceramics as their mediums.

Debra Denise Mergele passed away last week in her Blanco, Texas home at the age of 52. As an Army brat she frequently moved around the country in her youth, but she lived in Blanco for the last 20 years. She worked as a veterinary technician most of the time she lived in Blanco, and was known for her kindness, laughter, and love of animals and gardening.

James H. Ashley, 81, of Kerrville, passed from this life in the caring hands of the professionals at the Kerrville VA Hospital on Saturday, June 19, 2010.
He had an amazing sense of humor, was the life of any gathering, had a keen intellect, and a formidable strength of character. His life centered around his family.
He was born in Sondheimer, LA on May 25, 1929, a day his Uncle Slim road a horse to death to fetch the town doctor.

Lillian Juanita Wideman, 84, passed away Sunday evening, June 20, 2010 surrounded by her loving family. Lillian was born in Blanco, TX to Emil Edgar Uecker and Alma Spangenburg Uecker. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George Wideman, and her brother Gilbert “Pete” Uecker. Ronald Paul Zunker was born on August 4, 1935 and passed away on June 21, 2010 at the age of 74. He leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Donna Jo Zunker, two daughters; Jo Zunker from Spicewood, Texas, Kay Schielack and husband Brad from La Grange, Texas and a son, Ronald Zunker, Jr.

Cotton Hudson, age 80 of Johnson City formerly of Bee Cave passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2010.
Cotton was a member of Masonic Rambo #426 and Johnson City #561. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from LCRA.
He was preceded in death by his son, Allen J. Hudson and granddaughters, Heather and Cassie Hudson.

I am so burdened over the news of the Trey Noah murder and the arrest of Shelby Moore and Brandon Harber and who ever else may be involved.
This has been a horrible thing. I feel saddened for both mothers, fathers, grandparents and siblings. I have been thinking of what I could say to either one of them to help them through this.

Boerne, TX— Jennings Anderson Ford and Ford Motor Company awarded 2010 Blanco High School graduate Taylor McCormick a $1,000 scholarship through the Built Ford Tough Trucks/FFA Scholarship Program. The Texas FFA Association recently completed its State FFA Degree Check in Stephenville at Tarleton State University, where four local FFA members were selected to receive state scholarships.
Seniors Kaleigh Anderson, Taylor McCormick, Keaton Dodd and Corey Dowlearn brought home over $40,000 in scholarships. Kaleigh and Taylor were each awarded a $15,000 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship, while Keaton received a $10,000 Dick Walrath Scholarship.

The Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association recently released its 2010 All-State Teams. On the 2A roster, Blanco Panther senior John Ryan Pepper was named to the 2nd team as a 1st baseman. In addition to being named to the THSBCA All-State Team, John also joined teammate Tyler Tredaway as 1st Team Selections on the San Antonio Express News Sub-4A Team.

Three Blanco Panther baseball players have been selected to play in the annual Valley-Hi Optimist All-Star Game in San Antonio this Saturday, June 26, at 6:00pm. The annual event is played each year on the campus of St. Mary’s University at V.J. Keefe Field.
This year, seniors Brooks Wyatt, Tyler Tredaway and John Pepper will be representing Blanco High School.

Blanco has been a busy place these past weekends, with the Lavender Festival, June 11-13, and the All-School Reunion, June 19. The festival was a success, although we haven’t had any numbers or details yet, and the reunion was a full house.
Have you paid attention to the colorful crape myrtle trees around our little town, and especially downtown Hwy 281 and the courthouse grounds?

Lutheran Church Vacation School Registration Today

Pre-registration will be held today, June 19, for Trinity Lutheran Bible School for next week, June 22 to 26, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Registrar will be at the church from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., or call 833-4771 or 833-4526.
Pre-registration will make it possible to have enough material for all children coming.
