At first I wasn’t sure why I should be the one to do it but the good brother said that since I was the one in charge of the church’s young men, I should be the one. He informed me that a boy had taken up residence under some shrubbery by the building and that I should “run him off.” “After all,” the man said, “he could be a drug addict or something and bring harm to our kids.” Well, very dutifully, I approached the bushes, leaned down an ...

It’s an “old shoe” kind of common for grandparents, their “doting” in overdrive, to be proud of their grandchildren. With the fervor of Super Bowl football combatants, they stretch moments into hours, plunging into overtime with painful details about their “grands.” Or at least until the senior center manager declares that it’s time to go. One granddad spoke about his rough-and-tough quadruplet grandsons as often as he took pills for wha ...

Heb. 12:1-4 says, “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Stepping up to the counter in a fast food restaurant, I found myself face to face with a smiling middle-aged woman. “You look happy today,” I said. “Well I’m not,” she snapped, her smile quickly fading. And immediately I knew why I had stopped there to eat. Each morning I stock my shirt pocket with a variety of printed mini-messages (most are condensed columns) that I hope will make a difference in the lives of people I meet.

A young lady from a wealthy family was travelling abroad. She saw a bracelet with a price of $75,000 and immediately sent a message home to her father that she greatly desired to purchase the bracelet. The father responded quickly and meant to say, "No, price too high!" Unfortunately no comma appeared in his message and it read, "No price too high!"

Psalm 40 For the choir director: A psalm of David. 1 I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. 3 He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed.

Dear Editor, The campaign sign I put in my yard supporting Bill White for Governor was removed and replaced with two Perry signs Tuesday morning. I am especially disappointed because I taught Bill at Churchill High School in San Antonio and know him to be a decent, intelligent, compassionate man. I thought I had a right to support him with a sign on my property, but the Perry people, it seems, disagree.

Dear Editor, I wish that we could spend more time trying to prosecute the felons that have dumped cats at various locations throughout Blanco County rather than pursing the charitable acts of persons who have been feeding and caring for these victims of human irresponsibility. Animal abuse is a felony in the state of Texas and the dumping of animals is surely animal abuse. Spaying and neutering of cats has been proven to improve the lives of stray and feral ca ...

Dear Editor, The Hill County 100 Club has received reports that some telephone solicitation contractors for the Texas State Troopers Association (TSTA) have been claiming that the 100 Clubs spend 95% of their money on marketing. In the case of the Hill Country 100 Club and others we are familiar with, they have it just about backwards.

Dear Loyal Readers: Frank Leblanc, out in his pretty new fishing boat with his lovely wife, Dana, caught a FISH! A real live fish - it was a catch-and-release sort of thing, although it (the fish, not the boat) was fourteen inches long. At least that’s what Frank said, but we ladies know men and their “fish stories.” I mean to ask Dana if it was really a bluegill :) School is fast approaching, so get into your “watch for kids” dri ...
