On Saturday, August 21, fire quickly burned Russell Lane’s home to the ground.
Firefighters responded to a report of fire at 196 Dry Creek Run around 4pm on Sunday. Within twenty minutes, the house was engulfed in flames and despite the diligent work of local firefighters from Blanco, Stonewall and Johnson City Volunteer Fire Departments, the home was completely lost.
Russell Lane was in his residence when it caught fire, but was able to escape without injury.

Stonewall, Texas—Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park will celebrate the 102nd anniversary of President Johnson’s birth on Friday, August 27.
This free celebration begins at 10:00 a.m. with the laying of a wreath on his gravesite in the Johnson family cemetery on the LBJ Ranch. The wreath will be placed by representatives from Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, followed by remarks by Colonel Richard Murphy, Commander, 12th Flying Training Wing.

The PEC Board of Directors invited State Senator Troy Fraser and State Representative Patrick Rose to speak at its monthly Board meeting on August 16 in Johnson City. COMFORT – A Blanco youth received an award at the end of her week of camping at Hermann Sons Youth Camp this summer.
A week at Hermann Sons Youth Camp is offered as a fraternal benefit to junior members between the ages of 9 and 13. Eight weekly sessions are held each year at two sites - Riverside Camp for girls and Hilltop Camp for boys.

Wendy M. Watson recently placed third in the Professional Floral category at the Heart of Ohio Tole Conference in Columbus, Ohio. The art show consists of entries painted by registered conference attendees. Attendees can enter one item per category within their appropriate division. On Tuesday, August 31, the Fredericksburg chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas will host Brian and Shirley Loflin, photographers, authors, and teachers. Brian is a biologist and a photographer whose work has been published in various national and international magazines, books, and other publications. Brian’s photography has been displayed by several galleries and has won many awards.

Rosh Hashanah is coming up for the Jewish people and is really the kick-off of major Jewish holidays, including the holiest days of the year Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Rosh Chodesh. For most who don’t know what Rosh Hashanah is, I will provide a description from the internet and then share my first experience of Rosh Hashanah.
Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and, along with Yom Kippur, known to be Yamim Nora’im, which is Hebrew for “days of awe”.

Gladys Catherine Shelton, born November 21, 1917 passed away August 22, 2010 in Kerrville, Texas. She was one of 13 children born to Peter and Catherine Smola of Belchertown, Massachusetts.
Gladys graduated as a registered nurse in 1939 from Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. She worked in their operating room until she entered the Army in January 1942.

James L. Homer, Jr., 76, passed away August 24, 2010 in Austin, TX. He was born in Galveston, TX to James L. Homer, Sr. and Lucille Outlaw Homer. Mr. Homer was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Nancy Homer and infant son, Nicholas Homer. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Barbara Goodman Homer; three sons, Jeff Homer and wife Annette, Chris Homer and wife Melissa, and James Homer, III and wife Laura; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mary Alice Barker passed away on August 20, 2010 at the Live Oak Medical Center in Blanco, Texas at the age of 96. She was born on June 13, 1914 in Anson, Texas to Cliff and Birdie Tarver. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Horace Damon Barker, sisters, Eunice Jackson and Mavis Gainey and infant sister, Birdie Jane.

Members of the Blanco FFA Chapter recently took part in the first annual Race Day Classic Steer Show in Fredericksburg, along with the annual Jackpot Lamb Show. Both shows are held in conjunction with the Gillespie County Fair.
In the steer show, over 130 steers competed in 16 breed divisions. Jr.

The Blanco Panthers met up with the Mason Punchers at Panther Stadium on Thursday, August 19 in a pre-season scrimmage that allowed both teams to prepare for the new season. The Panthers came out strong in their debut at Panther Stadium, with a strong defense and a talented offense. Season play begins this Friday, August 27 when the Panthers welcome the Canyon Lake Hawks to Panther Stadium.

Band Booster to Meet Thursday

The first meeting of the Blanco Band Boosters Club will be Thursday, September 3rd, at 7:30 p.m. in the Band Hall.
Plans and goals for the coming year will be discussed. All parents of new students and those of former and students are urged to come, get to know each other, and make plans for promoting out Sweepstakes Band.
