In the early summer of 1994, my wife and I led sixteen art teachers into the rugged Sierra Madre Mountains of Chihuahua, Mexico. The goal was to learn the art of making pottery the way the Paquime Indians did hundreds of years earlier. We set up camp in a remote area known as Cave Valley, a narrow gorge lined on both sides with Indian cave dwellings and parted in the middle by the meandering Piedras Verdes River.

Well, I just ‘gotta tell y’all about yesterday! Yes, we had a woman preacher and she had the most loving, beautiful spirit. This past Sunday I was blessed to participate in another historical event in the history of Mt. Horeb Baptist Church, which has traditionally followed a rule that does not permit women behind the pulpit. September 19, 2010 was our 1st Women’s Day Service, and the sermon was given by a woman, an ordained minister from Pleasant Grove Baptist Churc ...

I’ve gotten through another Yom Kippur filled with a greater sense of determination to deepen my observances as a Jewish woman. I have resolved among many things to learn more about the faith/covenant that I have entered and to be a greater advocate for Israel. I’ve also walked away from the fast with a sense that the only way to heal this hurting world s not only from a greater sense of identity but also understanding the connection I share with people of all colors, religions a ...

Most of us have known people who were serene when everything seemed to be crashing down around them. In the most trying of circumstances, they have remained trusting and calm. Those going to comfort them have come away comforted. The secret of such peace in times of peril is to allow God to carry our cares. We will never escape cares because they are part of being alive.

1 Tim 3:16 says, “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” As was stated last week, the mystery of godliness (or the gospel) is no longer a mystery.

Dear Editor, I was extremely disappointed to learn that our City Council chose to proceed with approval of a variance for a new sign proposed by the Stripes Corporation. The sign will be placed in front of its new store at 13th and 281. Given all the new information provided to them, it seems that the prudent thing to do would have been to table this issue for further evaluation and public input.

Dear Editor, The requests for variance by the Blanco Luxury Suites and the (proposed) Stripes convenience store caught our attention like a runaway 18 wheeler barreling down Highway 281 on the wrong side of the road. Allowing businesses to have signs 60 feet in the air or 10 feet by 12 feet in size is absolutely ridiculous!

The 7th Grade Panthers put on an exciting exhibition of football in their season opener against San Antonio Christian (SAC). Although quoted by some to be the underdog, the Panthers’ performance, for the most part, was synonymous with traditional Blanco Football. Their efforts displayed a discipline expected of Middle School Football; however, signs of “Youth Football” applications appeared to surface now and then.

Blanco opened the game with sophomore Tim Goodman bulling his way through the Lions’ defense for a 33 yard TD run to complete an 8 play 74 yard drive.
