South Blanco County residents suddenly found themselves without power on Wednesday morning, December 1. The outage affected 1,062 Pedernales Electric Co-op members in the city and west of Blanco, out FM 1623 and RR 1888, starting at 8:45am, according to PEC communications manager Michael Racis. “Our lineman patrolled the line,” Racis reported, “and it appeared that an animal, most likely a squirrel, caused a breaker to open resulting in an outage.” PEC c ...

If you missed it, you missed out. The Blanco County Community Choir held their annual Christmas concerts on December 3 in Johnson City and December 5 Blanco. Beverly Voron started the tradition in 1975 “as a way to bring people from both ends of the county together to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas,” said director Vickie Pautz. “We had 33 members this year ranging in age from 13 years to 70,” Pautz said.

The Blanco FFA Livestock Judging Teams are off to a strong start for the 2010 – 2011 school year, having competed and placed high at their first two contests. Blanco’s junior team had a solid showing at the First Annual Lampasas Livestock Judging Contest held Saturday, October 30, placing 3rd overall.

Panthers Post Strong Win Over San Antonio Lutheran The Panther basketball team toppled San Antonio Lutheran, 61-46, on November 30. Four Panthers scored in double digits for the victory. Ian Ray scorched the nets for 18 points, followed closely by Clayton Green with 14. Austin Carrola added 12 and Sam Isenberg sank 10 points.

A Timeless Building Material – The second article in a series. Last week we learned that many remodelers, building owners, and homeowners are ripping out historic wood windows from old homes and historic structures. They have become the most vulnerable architectural elements of the historic buildings and historic homes. Historic wood windows were handmade, precise and the tolerances tight, there were no gaps in the joinery, and constructed of old-growth wood.

The army of the American colonies, of which George Washington had recently assumed command, was pathetic. The soldiers, for the most part, were armed with their own weapons and were without uniforms. They were ill prepared for the harsh realities of the winter of 1775-76. It was not unusual for sentries to freeze to death at their posts. Most of the recruits at that time were from New England.

Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Johnson City and St. Ferdinand Catholic Church in Blanco celebrated the Rite of Confirmation together on October 30th at Good Shepherd. The Diocese of Austin’s new bishop, Bishop Joe Vasquez, celebrated this most special sacrament. This was the first time Bishop Vasquez visited our community.

During the ministry of Jesus some said, "When the Christ shall come, He will not perform more signs than those which this man has, will He" (John 7:31)? Jesus provided abundant evidence that He was indeed the Christ spoken of in Old Testament scripture. Despite the ridicule and objections of the religious leaders many believed in Him.

Am I the only one that notices that our society has such a short attention span that we seem to prefer our information conveyed in small pieces also known as sound bites? Have you ever noticed how rapidly your attention span declines just from a short wait for a dish in the microwave?

Blanche Casparis, 91, passed away December 7, 2010 in Johnson City. She was born in Talpa, TX to Roy L. Clayton and Mae Lewis Clayton. Carl F. Zieglar passed away on Friday, December 10, 2010. He was born in Dallas, Texas on October 28, 1928. He was raised in Blanco, Texas until he joined the U.S. Army. He proudly served his country for 25 years. He was a Veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Dear Editor, With the holidays having a feeling of rush all the time, its nice to take time out and simply enjoy the "musical gift of Christmas". This past Saturday, I had the joy of hearing the Starlight Symphony as they performed a Christmas Concert at the Blanco High School cafeteria.

Dear Editor, Well, I have learned something from Dr. Leggett after all. I did not know that “De-Affirmed” was a word. However, “de-affirming” is exactly what he has been doing. If he were educating us on faith, he would have talked about our journey with Father being a lifelong walk.
