The 67th Annual Hill Country District Junior Livestock Show was recently held in Kerrville, where 18 Blanco FFA members competed in the market steer, barrow, lamb and goat shows. Overall, three local exhibitors qualified for the premium sale, while several others earned prize money for their high places. Leading the way for the Blanco FFA members was Jr.

After basking in the near 80 degree temperatures Sunday and Monday, residents of Blanco County woke up on Tuesday to the coldest temperatures by far of the season. The second of two frontal passages tore through south central Texas around 3am Tuesday morning, bringing frigid temperatures and wind chills with it.  The first front Monday morning brought warmer temperatures with it due to the wind shift from the north to the south.

The Pedernales Electric Cooperative Board of Directors voted at its Monday, Jan. 24 regular meeting to approve an operating budget for 2011 and to approve the strategic issues proposed in December 2010. Uptown Blanco Art Center is very pleased to have as their first show of 2011: Sweetheart Art with Hill Country artists Joe and Wren Winfield. Joe and Wren met in the jardin in San Miguel D‘Allende Mexico in 2001. Joe was making a Plein Air painting of the church, and as she watched him paint, Wren was immediately drawn to his wild style!

As a school administrator and as a parent I have seen many a young person balk when expected to follow certain rules and regulations. And it isn’t just youth, however, who get upset with having to follow rules. I recently traveled on Southwest Airlines. When you’re in a hurry, having to go through all the security rigmarole at the airport can be a real pain in the neck.

AUSTIN — With a $27 billion projected revenue shortfall boring a hole into the state’s fiscal years 2012 and 2013, it was generally assumed that both houses of the Texas Legislature would move with all possible speed to devise a budget to maintain state government functions on slimmer rations. The Blanco Chamber of Commerce held its annual banquet on January 27, 2011. The keynote speaker was “Dinosaur George” Blasing, who is a self-taught paleontologist and animal behaviorist. The banquet was also the debut of the Chamber Member Directory and Resource Guide.

As of December 31, 2010, one thousand feral and pet cats who make Blanco County their home have been helped by the Blanco County Cat Coalition (BCCC) since the coalition was founded in 2004.

In the previous article, it was explained that there are 14 sections in the strip of the cemetery labelled "A." We started at the back corner of the cemetery with Strip A because the back of the cemetery bordered by Jones and Callahan is blocked out much more clearly than the front of the cemetery.

Larry Joe Triesch, 67, of Austin, peacefully passed away on Friday, January 28, 2011. He was born on January 8, 1944 in Blanco, Texas to Eugene and Roena Triesch. Larry married the love of his life Mary Ann Lehmann on February 8, 1964 in New Braunfels, Texas. Shortly after their marriage he began to work for National Western Life where he worked for over 42 years until his retirement in March of 2007.

We certainly need a little good news after the past couple weeks of bad, so I am pleased to announce that Kristi Lyn Smylie of Owasso, Oklahoma, received the 2010 Young Bandsman Phi Beta Mu International Band Masters' Fraternity award for the State of Oklahoma. Kristi is a 2010 graduate of Owasso High School and is a freshman at the University of Arkansas.
