When rolling blackouts raised the possibility of the power going off for extended periods, and when icy bridges threatened travel, the shelters in Blanco County were standing by in case they were needed as places cold people could warm up or stranded travelers could wait for the ice to melt.
As it turned out, the shelters weren’t needed, and that was a lucky thing, because in Blanco we couldn’t have opened them.

In this age of environmental concern, such as being green, it’s only appropriate that in addition to recycling old bottles, newspapers and cans, many people are seeing the benefits of recycling old or deteriorated building and houses.
Although it’s not a new concept to buy a rundown “fixer-upper” with the intention of restoring it to an attractive and comfortable home or an retail location, many buyers are taking a renewed interest and some banks are taking a c ...

While serving as a missionary in Scotland in 1898, young David O. McKay and his companion walked by a building that caught their attention. It had a stone arch over the front door and an inscription chiseled in the arch. Elder McKay recalled:
“I said to my companion: ‘That’s unusual! I am going to see what the inscription is.’ When I approached near enough, this message came to me, not only in stone, but as if it came from One in whose service we were engaged:< ...

AUSTIN – Texans have it pretty good compared to people who live in other states, to summarize Gov. Rick Perry's 44-minute State of the State speech, delivered Feb. 8 to a joint session of the state House and Senate. And although the steady march of people leaving their home states to settle in Texas is evidence of the state’s overall health, things could be better, he admitted in so many words.
“Have the doomsayers forgotten that Texas added more jobs in 2010 than an ...

Lots of people are looking for work for the first time, or at least the first time in a long time. If you are one of those people, does the thought of a job interview remind you of an interrogation scene in an episode of “Law and Order”? Is the idea of writing a resume as overwhelming as the idea of writing a best-selling novel?

It’s been fairly simple to record who is buried in which section up to this point. Remember each section is 50' by 50'. In section A9, we have the cemetery office and some tool sheds. Beside the office, there is one grave; Samuel E. Walters lived from 1840-1850. On the eastside of the dirt drive there are three graves, according to measurements, that fit in this section; Beauford Morris (1905-1989) is buried on one row and down a row are Jesse L.

Most of us start longing for spring shortly after Christmas. And for many good reasons: the anticipation of returning song birds, signs of new life bringing their annual previews of resurrection, flowers pushing up green hands through the still cold soil announcing brighter days ahead and weather forecasts of fair and warmer replacing wind- chill factors.

“1Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
2For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
3How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
4God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonde ...

Ephesians 5:31-33 says, “For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.” Marriage is a mystical union.

In a letter to his mother, George Washington spoke of a early battle in which he escaped uninjured, but had four bullet holes in his coat and two horses shot out from under him. Talk about close calls!
There is a sense in which shots are being fired at us everyday.

Dear Editor,
In response to the article in your February 9 issue titled “What to Do With a Pot of Money”, I would like to offer one correction: in the February 8 Commissioner’s Court meeting the amount in the Appraisal District account of the Agency Fund was said to be $285,000 - not $85,000 as reported in the newspaper article.
Second, I would like to address some of the issues presented in the article.

First of all, I’ve wondered about job definitions for our elected officials. What are they? Here’s what I concluded after reviewing other cities and Internet searches.
