Blanco County News received a report that customers paying at the pump at a local gas station were getting more than they bargained for — a $100 pre-authorization hold. For the time that hold is on a credit or debit card, that money is frozen. A $40 fill-up at the pump could mean that $140 isn’t available to the customer until the hold expires. The hold usually falls off the account overnight, if not before.

Greeted by family and friends, Carl Chandler was recognized on Friday, February 25, by Community Action, Inc. of Hays, Caldwell, and Blanco Counties for over 18 years of volunteer service to the agency. The brief ceremony included an opening prayer given by Pastor “Skip” Brasher of New Hope Lutheran Church and was followed with remarks by the Community Action Board of Director, Gaylord Bose.

Texas Public Schools Week is celebrated statewide March 7 through 11. On Monday, Blanco High School will kick off Texas Public Schools Week with “Hats Off to Your Education” day, with students wearing caps of their favorite colleges. In addition, hallways will be displayed with locations and information of teachers’ colleges. BHS will host its open house on Monday, March 7, from 5:45pm to 7:00pm.

Two elections have been called for May 14, 2011. Blanco City Council will hold an election to elect two city council members and a mayor. Mayor Chuck Homan’s position is up for re-election along with Danny Ray and Bobby McClung’s council seats. Blanco ISD will hold a school board election on May 14, 2011, at the Blanco Elementary Cafeteria from 7am to 7pm.

On Friday, February 25, 2011, three mature live oak trees were planted in the Uptown Blanco Courtyard. Traffic was detoured around the 500 block of 4th Street as a 560-foot crane lifted the trees off flat bed trucks, hoisted them over the wall, and planted them in holes dug in the courtyard.

He did it again! My son, Bruce Malone, of Rusk, Texas, won his second consecutive Texas Mountain Bike Championship Marathon Series in the 50 plus age class. The six Marathon Series spanned the state from Palo Duro Canyon State Park to El Paso to Smithville and points in between. Pack 497 held their annual Pinewood Derby competition Wednesday, February 23, at the United Methodist Church. After an hour of intense racing against all of the other Cub Scouts, the top winners were declared and the three top winners will go on to the next competition Derby, which will be district level.

Have you been to the cemetery lately? Reading the tombstones—the dates, the quotes, the words baby, mother, father, and other inscriptions—causes the heart strings to be pulled. Some of the tombstones are very old and weathered and hard to read. Often a lonely rock marks the grave. In one of the following sections there are graves of a father and mother and below in the next row are three of their children who did not grow to adulthood.

Herman Klappenbach, 85, passed away February 28, 2011, in Johnson City. He was born in Blanco Co. to Richard Klappenbach, Jr., and Telka Triesch. Louise Jones Pinkston, 89, passed away February 25 in Blanco. She was a former resident of Fresno, CA and Kerrville, TX. She was born to Emil and Bethie Jackson Jones on January 23, 1922 in Blanco. She is survived by one sister, Oletha Jones, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation was held Tuesday evening from 4:00 to 8:00pm at Crofts Funeral Home, Blanco.

Dear Editor, Reading Patty Byars Haas “Remembrances of Blanco’s Past” was such a delight and enlightening. As a 10 year resident of Blanco, I truly love hearing these stories. In serving on the Blanco Chamber, Visionaries in Preservation, and other local groups, I’ve learned so much and want to continue making a difference in this wonderful town.

Dear Editor, On February 14, the Blanco Independent School Board renewed and extended contracts with its administrative staff, while simultaneously looking for ways to offset a budget crunch facing the district. The Blanco ISD is asking teachers to retire early as a means to address this potential budget crunch. The Texas Education Agency has rated Blanco Elementary School and Blanco High School as one level above Academically Unacceptable.

Blanco Middle School won the District 8-AA Middle School One Act Play for the second year in a row. Blanco was awarded first place, Comfort was awarded second place and Junction third place. Congratulations to the cast and Mrs. Arlitt for all their hard work in their performance for “The Great Pandemonium”.

Blanco defeated Natalia 11-2 behind the arm of James Leachman. Leachman went five innings, earning his first win on the year. Ethan Evans homered and drove in three runs and Shea Mangold had two RBI’s. Blanco defeated St. Marys Hall 14-4. Shea Mangold went five innings to earn his first victory.

The BHS golf team started their 4th season of play on February 17 and 18 at a tournament hosted by Harper. The boys team placed 4th. Team members are senior Braden Batey, junior Tanner Rogers, and sophomores James Leachman, TJ Hardin and Lane Hoelting. The girls squad also placed 4th.

The Lady Panther softball team scored a 7-3 victory over the Llano Lady Jackets on Tuesday, February 22. In the 5th inning, Mishelle Calzoncit scored a run on a Llano fielding error. Trailing 1-3 at the top of the sixth, the Panthers exploded with six runs to win the game. Kelsey Schwind started the rally with a deep fly ball to left field.

KBB Trash-Off & River Clean-Up The 12th annual Keep Blanco Beautiful “Don’t Mess with Texas” Trash-Off event will be held on April 2, 2011, along with the 5th annual Blanco River Clean-Up. Volunteers are needed; meet up at Bindseil Park on the Square at 9am and then disperse to clean-up the city streets.

I must apologize for the east side of the Square. Mother Nature has her own ideas about weather and work days (Tuesdays). We’ve been slow replacing the frozen, dead plants in the pots and planting areas, but we’ve begun. The yellow daffodils in the park are blooming. This is the first year for them.

March 1, 1968 Forty-four members of the Blanco Panther Band won fifty-eight Superior and Excellent ratings at the Region XI Solo and Ensemble Contest in Uvalde. There were thirty first division and twenty-eight second division ratings. • Blanco scored 20 points, placing ninth in a field of 19 schools at the Mason Relays in Mason.
