At their regular March 7 meeting, trustees of the Blanco Independent School District voted to order a bond election consisting of three proposals on May 14. Superintendent Dr. Buck Ford reminded trustees that the November bond election failed by only five votes.
“The voters spoke and we listened,” said Ford, relaying voter comments that they didn’t have a choice since there was no separation of issues.

The Blanco chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America attended the Region V Meeting held in Corpus Christi, Texas on February 10-12, 2011. The chapter members were among 1,200 delegates attending the two-day conference. The youth-developed theme, “Ignite the FCCLA Flame,” was carried out through tracks featuring a series of specialized workshops and general sessions in which members discovered ways to become actively involved in issues facing today’s youth.

Along with Bluebonnets, Paint Brushes, and other assorted wildflowers, Springtime brings the delicious aroma of world-class chili and barbecue to the Texas Hill Country around Johnson City. Spicy food enthusiasts flock to the Blanco County Fairgrounds to participate in the fun and foolishness associated with the Texas Men’s State Chili and Barbecue Championship which is held each year on the last weekend of March.

Two Blanco Panther powerlifters have qualified for the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting State Meet in Corpus Christi. Monica Flores and Erica Flores, both sophomores, qualified for state at the regional meet in Gatesville on March 5 by lifting the qualifying weight for their body weight classes. The qualifying weight is a combination of three lifts: the squat, the bench press, and the dead lift.

Getting our voices heard! March 3rd was an important day to make the trip into Austin to our State Capitol. Why? Because that was the day for the Senators on the State Finance Committee to hear witnesses present their cases regarding the looming budget cuts. Prior to this important meeting, Blanco citizens made the rounds of Senate offices that morning to make the case to save Blanco State Park.

An avid chamber musician, pianist Christopher Guzman honors Blanco Performing Arts as its artist to conclude its 2010-11 concert series; Guzman will appear this Saturday evening at 7:30 in the Uptown Blanco Ballroom. His stellar program praises Schubert, Griffes, and Prokofiev.
During his short lifetime of only 31 years, Franz Schubert was known most widely for his vocal solos, and his piano sonatas were eclipsed in popularity by those of his idol, Beethoven.

Allissa Abdelwahed, daughter of Misti Kittman of Blanco and Moncef Abdelwahed of Paris, France, was awarded first-year honors at Sweet Briar College for outstanding academic achievement for the 2010 fall semester.
To qualify for first-year honors, students must achieve an outstanding record, including a 3.3 grade point average with a minimum of 12 graded academic hours in the first semester of their freshman year.

The Pajama Mamas team was recognized at the Blanco County Relay for Life Kick-Off Meeting on February 22, 2011, as a “Platinum Team.” In order to reach platinum status, a team has to raise $10,000 in one year for the American Cancer Society.
The Pajama Mamas have been a Relay for Life team since 2005 in Blanco County.

Since 1991, Blanco United Methodist Church has awarded scholarships to deserving Blanco community students who seek to further their education after high school. More than $65,000 in scholarships has been awarded to 108 students.

What’s that building project south of Blanco? The local congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses, alongside volunteers from all over South Central Texas, are working hard on the new Kingdom Hall. The project is located at the entrance to Landon’s Crossing, on Logan’s Way, south of Blanco on U.S. 281.

A young employee was responsible for some missing funds at the company for which he worked. When the matter was discovered he was summoned to the main office. He was asked if the matter was true and he admitted his involvement. Much to his surprise, he was asked, "if you keep your present job, can you be trusted in the future?"

Fred Leslie Maly, 83, passed away March 7, 2011 at his home in Blanco. He was born in San Antonio to Fred V. Maly and Marie Alberthal Maly. Fred is survived by his son, Lynn Maly and wife Shelly of Blanco; daughter, Nickey Maly and her husband Bo Williamson of Spring Branch; and aunt, Daisy Jane Alberthal.

Keith K. Williamson, Sr., 79, passed away March 3, 2011 in New Braunfels, TX. He was born in San Marcos, TX to Earl Williamson and Mary Whisenant Williamson.
Keith is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Laura Read Williamson; three sons, Keith Williamson, Jr. and wife Sandra, Mark Williamson and wife Betty, and Read Williamson and wife Sissy; two daughters, Christine Cruess and husband Edward and Carol Caudill.

The Lady Panthers won third place in the 7th Annual Blanco Softball Tournament held March 3-5.
On Friday, the Panther’s first opponent was the Fredericksburg varsity team. Trailing 2-4 in the fifth inning, the Panthers rallied for a 5-4 win. Alex Gustafson hit a single, a double, and a triple to go 3 for 3 in the game.

April 2 is the date set for Blanco’s annual Spring Trash-off, sponsored by Keep Blanco Beautiful. Groups are needed to help clean up our city. If you wish to help, please contact Retta Martin at 833-4720. Every year, dedicated citizens gather litter along our streets, creeks and river banks. Keeping Blanco clean is everyone’s responsibility and those who help are much appreciated, with lunch after a morning spent gathering trash.

If it weren't for Pat Lane, I wouldn't have known this! Barbara and Joe Crowley, who were high school sweethearts in San Antonio, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family at the Uptown Blanco Restaurant on March 4. Family members came from several Texas towns and from Oklahoma as well.

The Blanco High School Band, directed by Billy Harrell, received another honor when it was named Outstanding Class A Band in both Concert and Sight-Reading at the 21st- Annual Heart O’ Texas Band Festival in Brady. This was the fifth consecutive time that the Blanco band received honors at Brady.
