At the regular meeting of the governing body of Blanco on March 8, Planning and Zoning Chair Dana LeBlanc reported that completed signage and lighting ordinances will be presented at two public hearings in April—the first at P&Z’s April 4 meeting and the second April 12 at the next city council meeting.

First reports of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami were still coming in from Japan when Blanco Countians began planning how they could help the survivors. One of the first steps was at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson City, where a work-day was scheduled for Saturday, March 19, to assemble personal hygiene kits. As winter ends and gives way to spring, prepare for the good weather by collecting household hazardous waste and recyclables as part of your spring-cleaning! This year, Blanco County, thanks in part to a grant provided by the Capital Area Council of Governments, will offer a county-wide household hazardous waste collection event at the IESI Transfer Station located at 377 Transfer Road, Johnson City, Texas.

Data released by the Census shows that the population of Texas grew by nearly 4.3 million people, an increase of 20.6%, to 25,145,581. Locally, Blanco County showed that same trend with a 25% increase. With the addition of 2,079 people since the 2000 census, the population inside the county went from 8,418 to 10,497. The City of Blanco’s population grew 15.5%.

Long owned by Doris Cox, Blanco Independent School District purchased the house and land in early 2010 for expansion. On March 1, the Blanco Public Library hosted a delegation of librarians from across Canada. The participants were part of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. This session focused on Library Management and social networking in the United States. Participants visited top libraries in the U.S. including the U.S.

On Friday, March 11, the Blanco Pioneer Museum opened its doors to allow visitors to preview the current World War II exhibit. With artifacts from all over, including uniforms, flags, newspapers, photos, and much more, the museum provides a glimpse into the past. Roy Byars’ stetson hangs on the wall above the Fulcher piano in the WWII-era living room display.

The Kendalia Neighbors Extension Club met at the Kendalia Community Center on Thursday, March 10. After the TEEA prayer, Krissie Thomson introduced the speaker, Fay Drozd, a master gardener from Ingram. The theme was gardening in the 21st century. She gave suggestions on the best seeds to purchase for our area, fertilizer and watering needs.

Blanco photographer Joseph Walsh will be featured as Artist of the Month at the Good Art Gallery at 218 W. Main St. in Fredericksburg as part of the monthly First Friday Art Walk on April 1. I encourage you to read James 3:1-12 very carefully. There are many verses in the Bible on right confession and the power of the tongue; but here, James gives perhaps the most thorough teaching on the subject. If you don’t think your words have affect on the course of your life, then the Bible says you are clearly deceived (1Cor 15:33).

I didn’t notice that part of the article on Abraham’s seed had been cut off until I had already submitted Hebrews 4. And you didn’t get to read the most important Scriptures showing us that we are Abraham’s seed if we believe God raised Jesus from the dead and trust in Him, like Abraham did!

A student nurse came into the hospital room to give her elderly patient a shot. The nurse asked him, "Which hip do want the shot?" The patient said, "Yours, honey!" I don't think that was one of the choices but I understand the response. One of the great choices of life is the choice to come to Christ.

Third Grade TAG Students (Talented and Gifted) at Blanco Elementary held a Mancala Tournament that ended on March 11. The tournament was a conclusion to Strategies and Logic the students have been studying for several weeks. These third graders meet three times a week for 30 minutes to learn above and beyond their regular classes.

March 18, 1960 Alfred (Jacobs) Pehl, 77, a life-long resident of the Blanco community, was fatally injured when his farm tractor overturned. Pehl was rushed to the Blanco Hospital where he died early Tuesday morning, March 15, 1960.
