At the April 11 meeting of the Blanco ISD trustees, Superintendent Dr. Buck Ford announced candidates for Places 1 and 2 in the May 14 election.  Mike Barnes and Tim Nance have filed as candidates for Place 1, while incumbent Troy Immel will run unopposed for Place 2.  Place 1 is currently held by MaryAnn Strohmeyer.  Classes for new board members will be offered at the TASB 2011 Summer Leadership Institute in San Antonio, June 9-11, according to Dr.

The Lady Panther’s softball team lost a non-district game to the Fredericksburg Billies, 4-8, on Tuesday, April 5, and then rallied for a win over the Junction Lady Eagles, 9-6, on Friday, April 8 to force a tie for the lead in District 8AA. The Panther’s record is now 15-12 overall and 4-1 in district. Against the Billies, Meaghen Seales led the Panthers with three singles and one run.

The Blanco Volunteer Fire Department raised $25,000 last Saturday from donations received at the door, mailed out letters, and the raffle. Some of this money will be dedicated to the building fund to help finance a new fire station. The rest will be used for maintenance and training to keep the fire department up and running smoothly. At their regular meeting on April 12, County Commissioners opted to move early voting from the County Courthouse in Johnson City to the Conference Room of the new Blanco County Annex.  Early voting from now on will be held in Room 108 adjacent to the County Clerk’s office at 101 E.

The District 8AA Tennis Tournament was held in Junction on April 6 and 7. Blanco’s mixed doubles team, Austin Carrola and Kelsey Schwind, won the district title. Mishelle Calzoncit placed fourth in varsity girls singles and Megan Wier took a medal for second place junior varsity girls singles. On Wednesday, March 25, 2011, members of the Blanco Woman’s Club met with Barney Cline, representing the Blanco Library Oral History Project, at the library. Kathee Copeland, president of the club, presented Barney with a check for $4,300 as a gift from the Woman’s Club. The funds were raised from the sale of the Woman’s Club Cookbook, which was made available for sale at businesses throughout Blanco.

The Blanco County Cat Coalition and the San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition are teaming up to sponsor a trapping workshop on Saturday, April 23, from 12 to 2pm at the Blanco Library. The new Stripes convenience store, located at the former Blanco General on US 281 south of town, held an open house on Thursday, April 7, to show the community what the store has to offer.  Guests were able to sample a wide variety of entrees, snacks, drinks, ice cream, and more.

The Texas Historical Commission Annual Conference was held in Austin from March 31, 2011 through April 2, 2011. The new statewide plan for Texas was launched at this year’s annual conference. Every 10 years the THC develops a Statewide Preservation Plan to set an agenda for preservation and encourage partnership connections across the state.

Former students of Texas A&M University will assemble in Blanco on April 21, 2011 for the annual Texas Aggie Muster to honor all Texas Aggies who have passed away within the last year. Various activities, including a meal and the traditional Muster Ceremony, will begin at 6:00pm at the Court Yard at Uptown Blanco.

Through this season of Easter preparation, I’ve seen many people demonstrating their love for Jesus and God our Father, in many different ways.  In the past, I have fasted during Lent, abstained from meat during Lent, and have denied myself sugar and other things I like very much during Lent, as a way to ‘suffer’ for Christ. We don’t have to do that because every day we Christians suffer in some manner.

The recent uprisings in the Middle East have been dubbed the Arab Spring. I infer from this name that the revolutions are spontaneous combustions in Arabia. I believe underlying these disorganized rebellions, there is something noble and generous beyond belief. AUSTIN — A crowd, estimated at 5,000 people from across Texas, gathered at the Capitol to participate in a “Save Our State” rally on April 6. Participants, many of whom are state employees with jobs on the chopping block, came to protest cuts proposed in the 2012-2013 state budget approved by the House on April 3, and to ask for greater consideration as the budget-writing process continues. The Senate must produce its own version of the budget.

This past month, 38 Blanco FFA members traveled to Stephenville to compete in the annual Tarleton State University Invitational Career Development Events. The TSU Invitational is the largest event of its kind in the world, with almost 10,000 contestants each year. Of the 15 competitive events, Blanco competed in 7, with 5 placing in the top 10 overall.

The Panther baseball team hosted the Fredericksburg Billies in a non-district game on Tuesday, April 4, and walked away with a 5-7 loss. On April 8, Blanco played a district game against Junction at home and won, 10-0. The Panthers currently hold a 15-8 season record.

The Panther Junior Varsity Baseball team is off to one of its best starts in years, posting a 17 and 1 record overall while also winning its first four district games.  Blanco’s JV has also won 2 tournaments.  In the Ingram tournament, the Panthers collected 4 wins while outscoring their opponents 41 to 10.  At Blanco, the Panthers swept all 3 games of the tournament, allowing just 1 run while posting 2 shutouts and scoring 22 runs.  The Panthers will continue their ...

As of press time, several huge wildfires are raging throughout the state. The first is a rapidly-moving wildfire in Jeff Davis county that has spread to over 60,000 acres and destroyed about 40 homes in Ft. Davis before raging farther north and east.  Another fire in west Texas has burned 16,000 acres in Midland County and destroyed about 34 homes, according to Alan Craft, a Texas Forest Service spokesman. My church recently conducted an open house to celebrate the completion of a beautiful new meetinghouse.  I invited friends and neighbors to tour the building, enjoy the artwork that adorns the hallways and classrooms, and to learn a little about what makes us tick.  Although the event was well attended, very few of my invitees showed up. On Saturday, Marilyn, Lawrence, and Nan Mikes were in Seguin for their granddaughter, Shelby Burt’s, wedding. Shelby married Geoff Striedel of Cuero. They were married Saturday afternoon with dinner and a dance following. They will make their home in Seguin.
