Senior Austin Carrola and Sophomore Kelsey Schwind have played singles through their school years, but this year friends, family, and coaches convinced the pair to team up for mixed doubles. Early season wins at Canyon Lake, Wimberley, and Fredericksburg cemented the plan to play doubles in the District 8AA tournament played in Junction on April 6.

As many as 200 restored cars, trucks, and other vintage vehicles will be displayed on the grassy banks of the beautiful Blanco River starting at 10 a.m. You can also see pre-1949 classic sedans, limos, and vehicles that traveled our Texas highways before the advent of the Interstates. The event is free to walk-in visitors wishing to view the show and there is ample parking near Blanco State Park.

Part two of the annual membership meeting of the Blanco Historic Cemetery Association was held on Monday night, May 16, at 7pm at the Masonic Lodge.  The previous meeting, held April 25, was cut short when slow progress and arguments caused the meeting to run against the 8pm closing time at the Blanco Library.Board members Dennis Moore, Diane Hostetler, Gail McClellan, Rebecca Howerton, Tina Gourley, and Connie Russell were present as the meeting began.

After a brief public hearing, members of the governing body of Blanco heard plans from local child care provider Peggy Berryhill for a new child care facility to be built on her property at 13th Street and Greenlawn Parkway in Blanco.  Identifying herself as the only certified child care provider in Blanco, Berryhill informed council that she housed a daycare center in her home for 20 years,  and for the past two-and-a half-years has operated a facility in the former parsonage at t ...

Chuck Homan has been re-elected as Mayor of Blanco. On the city council, Danny Ray retains his seat and challenger Maria Guerrero replaces Bobby "Mack" McClung.  Tim Nance has won Place 1 on the Blanco ISD School Board, taking the seat Mary Ann Stromeyer is leaving.

Now in its fourth year, Bicycle Sport Shop presents the Real Ale Ride, which rolls through the hills of the scenic Texas Hill Country on May 21. This year the Ride will begin and end at the Real Ale Brewing Co. grounds for a spirited celebration of local beer, music and food.  The Real Ale Ride is fully supported and designed for all levels of cyclists, with route distances of 15, 30, 50, 65 and 80 miles.

The first annual Bands for Band Music Festival will be held on May 21, 2011 at Yett Memorial Park in Blanco, Texas.  Blanco High School Band Boosters and band members have set out to raise money to purchase new uniforms for next year’s marching season.The event begins at 2:00 pm and concludes at midnight.

The class of 1949 had a class reunion on the 5th of May at the Bowling Alley Cafe. Oh my! Eating lunch with a bunch of eighty-year-olds was fun.It was our 62nd reunion. When we graduated, it was a class of 23 members. Nine members have passed away; only seven came.

Pedernales Electric is recognizing and supporting local organizations throughout its service area with $1,000 donations through its annual Light the Way program. Pictured is a recent commercial shoot for Mountain Dew soft drinks that was shot on the Blanco River at the Fischer/Pehl Ranches on Ranch Road 1888.  A large bicycle ramp was constructed next to the waterfalls on the river, and professional bicyclers from around the country rode bikes down the ramp, shooting up into the air and then down into the Blanco River.  The national commercial is set to run on several stations in about two months.

Family and friends are holding a benefit on Saturday, May 21, at the Blanco County Fairgrounds for David and Karen Freer. David and his wife, Karen, are long time residents of the Johnson City area. David is a rancher and Karen is recently retired from PEC. David has been battling with leukemia and has been approved for a life-saving stem cell transplant at M.D.

The Blanco County Child Protection and Family Advocacy Board held their essay and poster contest for the students of Blanco County in an effort to promote an awareness of child abuse. The students were divided into five age group categories, with winners placing first through third in each category. The youngest children created posters and the older children were given a choice of essay topics.The winners in the Pre-K through second grade category were: Shelby M.

Abbey Weaver, Abby Beard, and Meaghen Seales traveled to Austin to compete in the State track meet on Saturday, May 14. Weaver took home 3rd place in Pole Vault, Beard took 5th in the 800 meter run, and Seales placed 5th in the 1600 meter run.

Blanco won game one with a score of 11-4 behind the arm of senior Clint Dreyer. Dreyer went the distance, striking out three and scattering five hits.Weston Copenhaver had the big stick going 3 for 4, scoring two runs and knocking in three. Colton Childress went 2 for 3, with four RBIs.

Tom Philips spent a day picking up trash along the Blanco River in the state park.  His haul, shown here, is from his voyage along half the river in the park and accumulated over a two-week period since he last picked up trash.  Tom also picked up a record (for him) number of bobbers.

Things to do in May: Cut back Spring blooming plants that have finished flowering. If you plan to install a new lawn, this is a good time. Use sod or seed.Delmar is a good St. Augustine grass; it handles shade better than the other varieties and it resists fungus. Bermuda and Buffalo grass are excellent for sunny spots.
