The most surprising thing about the tornado area in Joplin, Mo, is the vastness of it. When I stand at ground level – or even on a hill – it is all rubble as far as I can see. Almost no buildings are left standing, and even those are badly damaged.

No one wants to suffer. No one likes to hurt. And personally, I don’t believe God wants that for us. In fact, I know God explained the good and the bad and then told us to choose the good! He said choose life! And He explained what He’d do for us if we did, and if we didn’t.

The point is sometimes made in scripture that our temptations and trials are not unique to us. Paul says, “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man;...” (I Corinthians 10:13). The apostle Peter says, “...Knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world” (I Peter 5:9).

Dear Blanco, I am wondering why some of you have this anger and distain for my wife Donnea Simon. All she did was open her own location during the Blanco Lavender Festival calling it Blanco Lavender Days. She in no way took vendors away from the Chamber event. She offered a location to vendors who the Chamber had rejected in their vetting process.

What a crowd! The Lavender Festival was quite a success. The new benches were used by visitors and citizens alike. They are an asset to the downtown area. This heat is not conducive to gardening, but you can begin to think about your plants for the fall. You can start tomatoes from seed or plant transplants.

After working the Lavender Festival and talking to more people, small is “IN”. More and more people want to build small; or even coming from the real estate side, I kept hearing “I want to leave or down size from a 3200-4200 square foot home and go into a smaller home”.
