The American Legion Memorial Highway Post 352 and the Memorial Highway Auxiliary Unit 352 participated in the July 4th parade in Johnson City along with many other participants. The American Legion was very honored to be the Color Guard. On the float were Commander Tom Avants, 1st Vice Commander Steve Klein, and 2nd Vice Commander Dale Spreen.

On May 31, former Pedernales Electric Cooperative lawyer Walter Demond, 63, was found guilty by a Kendall County jury. He had been charged with three first-degree felonies–theft, money laundering, and misapplication of fiduciary property. Demond was found to have paid two relatives of former PEC officials by moving over $200,000 of PEC funds through Clark, Thomas & Winters, his former firm.

Fire departments were called out to a fire in the 4900 block of Crabapple Rd. on Thursday, June 30. The Blanco Volunteer Fire Department was first dispatched, and firefighters from Kendalia, Johnson City, and Spring Branch followed. With the potential for grass and brush fires to expand rapidly, multiple agencies are dispatched for any reports. The departments got it under control in a hurry, reported Blanco fire chief David Hotz.

The Grand Opening for Fancy Up was held at noon on Friday. Fancy Up, located at 49 Main Street, is a salon and boutique that offers pedicures, manicures, teeth whitening, haircuts and styling, tanning and spray tanning, along with an array of fashions, gifts, and accessories. RK Seals killed this 5-foot rattler outside our porch at the ranch on Saturday after it bit our basset hound Gus. It was eating a rabbit at the time, so the bite it gave Gus was a "dry bite"–no venom, as we found out after we took him to the emergency vet in New Braunfels.

Pedernales Electric Cooperative is calling on its members and former members to claim capital credits worth about $4.2 million that were distributed in 2007 for memberships from 1960-76. As of May 2011, about 40,000 capital credits checks issued in 2007 and 2008 still have not been cashed and have expired. PEC sent checks to members’ last known addresses. This month, the public can go to www.pec.coop and review a list of members for whom PEC is holding unclaimed property.

Applications for emergency farm loans for losses caused by drought, excessive heat, high winds, and wildfires occurring from January 1, 2011, and continuing are being accepted at the Farm Service Agency (FSA) office located in Uvalde, Farm Loan Manager, Sara K. Several local members of the Blanco FFA Chapter have already had a busy summer attending various camps across the state. James Leachman, Rance Dollahite, Kristen Bowman and Alley Penshorn spent 4 days at the Area VII Leadership Development Camp held at McKinney Roughs in Bastrop. These students spent their time participating in leadership and team building activities while also planning activities for the upcoming school year.

The crape myrtles are beginning to bloom in the Blanco and surrounding area. Many of the trees are old. Think about the crape myrtles in the courthouse lawn and the red ones beside the City Hall. I have lived in Blanco since ‘79 and they were large trees at that time.
