The 81st annual Blanco County Fair & Rodeo starts this Thursday and runs to Saturday. Held at the Blanco County Fairgrounds on US 281 on the Pedernales River in Johnson City, the event has a storied past. For more information, visit the event website at bcfra.org. FOUND! These five lab mix puppies–four black and one brown–were found at Sta-Bilt and are in need of homes. Council member Rebecca Howerton and Mayor Chuck Homan collected them and delivered them to Blanco Veterinary Clinic. If you’re interested in taking home one of these pups, call the clinic at 830-833-5140.

More than 20 Blanco Library supporters came to the August 9 meeting of the governing body of Blanco to protest funding cuts to the library, which, according to librarian Crystal Spybuck, is already facing a 64 percent cut in funds from the state. Statistics cited by Spybuck include the fact that over 100 people use the library every day, over 650 per week in the summer.

The Postal Regulatory Commission released a list of more than 3,600 post offices that are being considered for closure. Post offices on the closure list include Hye, Willow City, and Doss. The stakeholders of the Hye Preservation Society scheduled a meeting on August 15 to determine if there was sufficient support to prevent the closure of the Hye Post Office and to map out a plan. Congratulations, Chelsea Harvey! Chelsea graduated from Texas State University on August 12, 2011, with a degree in Kinesiology. Chelsea is a 2006 graduate of Blanco High School. On Thursday, August 11, members from both the Blanco and Johnson City Chambers gathered together at the Miller Creek RV Resort Recreation Room and enjoyed a fabulous evening of food, beverage, networking, prizes, and fun, fun, fun. Sixteen-year-old Rain Johnston Reich, daughter of Mary Johnston, director at Uptown Blanco Art Center, and Charles Reich of Alamosa, Colorado, volunteered with Dr. Behrend’s team. Rain volunteered all summer with the goal of becoming an Equine Vet. She feels that Dr. Behrends and his great crew were a perfect introduction into the realities of Veterinary Science and felt Dr.

The Blanco County Association of Retired Educators will have its first meeting of 2011-2012 on Thursday, August 25 at 11:30 AM at the Uptown Blanco Restaurant in Blanco. The meeting will begin with lunch that individuals can order from the regular menu. The program will include a presentation by Members’ Benefits advisor Seth Taylor, who will explain Texas Retired Teacher Association (TRTA) benefits.

With the school year starting and teachers already back at work, First Baptist Church of Blanco hosted a Teacher Appreciation Lunch on Tuesday, August 17. It was quite the turnout, with enough teachers stopping by to fill the fellowship hall twice over. Kim Watts cooked the food and a slew of volunteers helped put the event together.

For several years now, the Blanco County 4H and FFA Youth Council has been on the courthouse square during and after each annual rodeo parade preparing succulent bar-b-que to try and raise funds for their annual scholarships for graduating seniors in the county. Unfortunately, due to several contributing factors, mainly the dry conditions, this proud tradition will not be carried on this year.

A local Blanco County News reader called in to remind our other readers to check on appliances in outbuildings. Brownouts have been reported with the high heat, which may trigger circuit breakers or cause problems with some electronics. In our helpful reader’s case, her refrigerator in her outbuilding failed during a brownout and she didn’t find out until it was too late.

Johnson City resident and songwriter Penny Ney will be releasing her single "County Fair" at the Blanco County Fair & Rodeo. She will be singing the song at the grand opening on Friday night. Penny assembled a top notch group of musicians to record with. A police officer pulled over a driver who had several machetes in the back seat. When asked about them, the man said he was a performer and he juggled machetes. The officer didn't believe him and asked for a demonstration. As he was juggling, another driver drove by and saw the juggling act.

Edythe Deene Bell Knox passed away August 13, 2011, of natural causes. She was born in Oklahoma City on December 30, 1924. While serving as a Cadet Nurse during World War II in Coronado, California, she met and married Ray Knox on December 21, 1942. Edythe headed up the Neonatal Unit of a major Oklahoma City hospital and worked with renowned urologist Dr.

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry declared his candidacy for president of the United States on Aug. 13 at RedState Gathering, a Republican blogger convention in Charleston, S.C. Perry’s declaration ended a period of many months of public speculation over his intentions. In declaring, Perry expressed his intention to export Texas ideas on governance to the rest of the nation and told the audience he would work to make Washington, D.C., as “inconsequential” as he can in the lives of Americans.

Season ticket sales for the Blanco Panther 2011 varsity football season will go on sale on Monday, August 29, for renewals only until Friday, September 1. Initial ticket sales will begin on Tuesday, September 6, until Friday, September 9. The cost will be $25 for adults and $15 for students (five home games).

Blanco EMS released their call volume for May and June 2011. In May, the corps received 58 dispatched calls and had 52 patients. 9 needed no treatment or transport, 13 needed treatment and no transport, 28 received transport and treatment, and 8 calls were false alarms or unfounded. 30 calls were in the county and 28 were in the city.
