It’s time to polish those cowboy boots and get out some “bling.” The theme for this year’s Old Blanco County Courthouse Gala, to be held October 15 in Blanco on the historic courthouse grounds, is “Boots and Bling.” A number of events will make the day and night one to remember.

Beginning at 9:00am and until 4:00pm, the monthly Market Days on the courthouse square will feature vendors selling unique items, many of them crafted by artisans in the Hill Country.

On Tuesday, the Bastrop County fire had been 70% contained and limited re-entry was being allowed by officials. The fire, which began September 4, has consumed 34,068 acres and destroyed 1,554 homes at last count.
The American Red Cross and other organizations have received tremendous amounts of food, clothes, and other items for those who were evacuated from the area.
They’ve received so much that they’re asking people to instead donate money, reported local resident Ralph Wakefield.

The next hurdle in the process of renovating/expanding the Blanco Elementary School campus was cleared on Monday night as trustees approved the design development phase documents as presented by Bob Shelton of Fromberg Associates. Shelton credited meetings with elementary teachers and staff for making the plan better over the last few months.

A public hearing was held on Wednesday, August 31, in order for county commissioners to receive public comment on redistricting of county election, justice of the peace and commissioners court precincts. The public was invited to attend and to participate in the meeting but there were few in attendance.

Blanco County volunteers sent their first batch of burn buckets to the victims of the Central Texas fires this week, and all should have been delivered by the time you read this.
A second assembly line is scheduled for this Saturday.
Burn buckets contain cleaning supplies specific for fire cleanup, with instructions for using some of the less obvious contents.

On Friday, September 2, the Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department was called out to an 80-acre fire in Pedernales Hills.
"It was a heck of a fight," said J.C. Fire Chief Roy Burdett, "with Forestry doing air drops and assistance from Blanco, Round Mountain, Hays, Willow City, and Stonewall."

The Planning & Zoning Commission met on Wednesday, September 7, for a meeting and public hearing regarding the proposed signage ordinance in the Unified Development Code.
Commissioners Matt Lewis, Kirk Felps, chair Tony Vela, and Connie Barron were present.
During the public hearing, Barron discussed various technical changes to the published proposed signage ordinance.

After two defeats on the road to open the season, the Blanco Panthers returned home for their home opener hosting the Somerset Bulldogs. Blanco took full advantage of a packed house and home field advantage to score in every quarter for their first win of the season.
The Panthers opened the first quarter scoring on a 39-yard 10-play drive, eating over six minutes off the clock, ending with a Tim Goodman 1-yard run.

A habitat restoration pioneer, a noted conservationist-philanthropist, and the state’s largest landowner membership organization, have been elected to the Texas Conservation Hall of Fame. J. David Bamberger, George C. “Tim” Hixon, and the Texas Wildlife Association comprise the Class of 2011 to be inducted at a gala September 22 at the Grand Hyatt in San Antonio.

The Blanco Planning and Zoning Commission has been hard at work for months on a new sign ordinance for our town. Blanco already has an ordinance, but there had been so many requests for variances and questions raised that are unaddressed in our current code that the City Council asked P&Z to revisit the issue.

In April of 2010, I became an "Avon Lady," and in doing so I have met some of the most wonderful people, whom I now call friends.

On September 9 the Lunches of Love recipients enjoyed chicken salad and fruit provided by New Hope Lutheran Church at the Gem of the Hills. The Dry River Band sang and played various melodies to the enjoyment of all. Phil Parker and Sally Windham provided transportation to those who needed it.

Mark October 8 on your calendars for this year’s Authors’ Day celebration at the Blanco Library. Members of the library-sponsored Blanco Book Bunch reading group have invited three authors to discuss their books and sign them for purchasers. Mystery-writer Taffy Cannon will discuss Blood Matters beginning at 10 a.m. At 11 a.m.

The fun of Kids’ Choirs begins again this Wednesday night, September 14, from 6 to 7pm at First Baptist Church.
This year's Christmas program is entitled Christmas in Reverse, so kids are encouraged to wear their clothes inside out or backwards. Taped auditions for speaking parts for the musical will be held this evening.

The youth of Blanco Cowboy Church held their final 2011 Youth Play Day on Sunday afternoon, September 11, following worship services and a BBQ lunch. These young cowboys and cowgirls were a Blessing to all and are to be commended for their excellent sportsmanship as they “Rode For Jesus.”

The Blanco County Community Choir is rehearsing every Sunday afternoon at 4:00 at the First Baptist Church in Blanco. This county-wide choir has been presenting an outstanding Christmas program to the Johnson City and Blanco communities for 37 years. Since it is a volunteer choir, the membership changes over the years, but it has remained open to teenagers through senior citizens.

When Queen Victoria was a child she was under the care of tutors. She seemed totally uninterested and restless. The instructors met to discuss the situation, one of them said, "has anyone spoke to the child about her destiny, has anyone told her that she will be the Queen of the British empire?"

A group of citizens, joined by community pastors, gathered on the courthouse lawn on Sunday evening, September 11 for prayer. Addice Hinchman opened the event and welcomed those who were in attendance. J.D. Link, Rusty Hicks, Phil Thompson, Lawrence Coffee, Mayor Chuck Homan, and others prayed for the community, for the U.S., and for rain.

Harry Edwin Sultemeier was born March 3, 1934 in Sandy, Texas to Edwin Adam Sultemeier and Adele Hulda Sultemeier and passed away on September 10, 2011.
He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in April, 1951 at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, Texas, by Pastor Otto Lindenberg.
Harry attended school in Sandy until the community school closed.

This may or may not apply to you, as the closest Walgreen’s store is in Dripping Springs. Having said that, I will never patronize Walgreen’s again! A Benton Harbor, Michigan, Walgreen’s pharmacist Jeremy Hoven was fired after defending himself with his own gun against two armed robbers. One of the robbers jumped the counter at the pharmacy and pulled the trigger three times.

This fall, with the approval of the family of Alma Ward Hamrick, the San Saba County Historical Society will publish the first new printing of the “Call of the San Saba,” in 40 years. The new edition will contain the updates appearing in the 1971 edition as well as some of the photographs from the earlier, 1940 edition.

AUSTIN --- Along with the rest of the nation, Texans solemnly observed the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States of America.
People of all ages and walks of life paused in remembrance of the events of that day and to honor the dead, the injured, surviving family members, friends and associates.

Chase Klein (left) drew Chris Champion’s ticket at the home football game last Friday. Champion won the game ball, which is raffled off by the Lions Club at every home game. Lions Club President Ben Copeland is also pictured. All ticket receipts go to a scholarship fund for BHS seniors.

The Lady Panther varsity team traveled to San Antonio to St. Mary’s Hall on Tuesday, September 6, and came away with a 3-1 victory. The set scores were 25-22, 17-25, 25-17, and 25-17. Abbey Weaver had eleven kills, two aces, and four blocks to lead the Panthers. Lindsey Jenkins made thirty assists, Meaghen Seales had two aces, and Alex Gustafson made twenty-six digs.
The junior varsity posted a 2-0 win, while the freshmen lost 1-2.

Have you noticed the flowers and trees blooming since the break in the temperature? The 100 degree plus temperature shuts down blooming for plants and vegetables. Fruit producing vegetables will begin bearing again when the weather breaks.
There is much concern over the loss of large, old trees. Without rain soon, we will see many die.

My work in Uruguay, South America, often took me to the home of the Benaventi family. I thought it a little peculiar that when Mr. Benaventi came home from work each day he would get out of his suit and tie, put on his pajamas, occupy a comfortable chair on the sidewalk in front of his house and leisurely sip his mate tea as he watched the world go by.

Houck, am indeed glad to be able to resume publication of the Blanco County News this week after having to suspend publication for eight weeks, due to a serious heart attack suffered the day my wife and I returned from vacation. • The historic Hye General Store and Post Office in Hye had been named a Recorded Texas Historical Landmark significant to the history of this community and state and worthy of preservation.
