Blanco Independent School District Financial Manager Kay Fraser reported to BISD trustees at their October 10 meeting that the district has received a Superior Achievement rating in the Financial Integrity Rating System, earning 77 out of a possible 80 points. The district has earned this rating every year since 2001, when the ratings were instituted by the Texas Education Agency. Blanco County got some much needed and much welcomed rain Saturday and Saturday night. An upper level atmospheric low pressure system reacted with deep moisture throughout the atmosphere to bring us scattered showers and thunderstorms. The upper level jet stream position made diffluence favorable. Diffluence is an air flow pattern where wind direction diverges along an axis parallel to flow along that axis.

The Harlem Ambassadors, known for their dazzling ball-handling tricks, high-flying slam dunks, and hilarious family-friendly comedy, will be taking on the Blanco All-Stars this January 26 in the Blanco High School gym. “We’re looking at it from three perspectives,” said Marcy Westcott, vice-president of the Blanco Chamber of Commerce. “The opportunity to bring entertainment on a level that Blanco hasn’t seen before.

Gilbert Atkinson, 43, of Blanco County, was sentenced to 25 years in prison last Thursday, October 6, after pleading guilty to the March murder of Ravis Clark, 55. The trial was set to begin on November 1 in Kendall County. The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a concerned friend at approximately 1:21 am on Saturday, March 26.

After a 2 and 3 record to start the season and a bye week to prepare for the visiting Ingram Warriors, the Panthers got exactly what they needed to open district play; an easy homecoming win. Blanco scored early and often to coast to a 56 to 0 win to even their season record at 3 and 3.

Tim Griffin and Lesley Griffin of Blanco announce the marriage of their son, Tyler, to Melanie Hanson, daughter of Tony and Denise Hanson of Emporia, Kansas. The wedding was in Emporia, Kansas, on September 24, 2011. Melanie is a 2010 graduate of Emporia State University. Tyler graduated from Blanco High school in 2009 and is serving in the US Navy on the USS Jimmy Carter.

August and September were busy months for the cub scouts after the fun of summer was over – it was time to get to work. The cub scouts did Show and Sell Popcorn at Blanco National Bank and Stripes, which is where the scouts actually have the popcorn on hand to sell to customers.

Blanco is in the official “Texas Hill Country Regional Christmas Lighting Trail” brochure this year. We are very excited to have accomplished this …let’s make a big splash of lights and decorations to encourage people to stop in Blanco instead of just passing through. The Lighting of Blanco will be November 25 through January 2. The Christmas committee is encouraging all businesses and residents in Blanco to decorate for this tour of our town.

We had a good rain in Blanco County last weekend – even a great rain considering the summer we just went through – but it wasn't a drought-breaker. We are blessed to have the best firefighters around. They volunteer their time to keep us safe, and do a fabulous job of it, however in this period of severe drought and numerous fires, their supplies are in need of replenishment. In order to help them accomplish this and appreciate them, there are plans in the works for a Street Dance which is scheduled for November 12 from 3 p.m.

With the building and completion of the New Blanco County Annex, voters will find in the upcoming Constitutional Amendment Election being held November 8, 2011, that certain polling locations have changed. On April 12, 2011, Blanco County Commissioners Court approved to relocate the main early voting location to the Conference Room (Room 108) at the New Blanco County Annex, 101 E.

Blanco Performing Arts’ first performance of the season was The Artisan Quartet, held in the Uptown Blanco Courtyard. “I was impressed with the happy expressions on the faces of the audience,” said coordinator Vickie Pautz, “both during the concert and afterwards and very glad for such a good turnout. The Mambo is an experience in rhythmic precision that delighted and energized the audience.” The next performance, by REVEL, will be on February 4.

The six participating Chapters of District 5, Section 3, Grand Chapter of Texas, Order of the Eastern Star, will host “Daisy Daze” Eastern Star School of Instruction at the Old Blanco County Courthouse on October 13. There will be approximately 100 Eastern Star members from across the state in the city of Blanco for this two day event. Other activities include “Galloping through the Hill Country” banquet to be held on October 12 at the Blanco Masonic Lodge.

This week we are covering section 9C. We came across an interesting situation in this section. In the cemetery records the name “Wilhelmena Beckmann” appears; but on the tombstone the name is “William Mena., wife of Henry Beckmann.” It is not uncommon for the cemetery records to have a misspelling.

Dear Editor, I just want to alert the citizens of Blanco that there is a lot of breaking and entering going on – some in the daytime, some at night. Someone I know very well just had their home broken in. The thieves threw a rock through a window on the back side of their home and entered.

The Blanco Panther Marching Band competed in the Roosevelt Rough Rider 28th Annual Marching Contest at Hereos Stadium in San Antonio on October 8. The band placed 2nd with the judges scoring the band with Division I, I, and II ratings. Next Saturday, October 15, the band will march in the UIL Region Marching Contest at East Central High (SA) at 3:45pm.

Work on the elementary building project is continuing at a better-than-anticipated pace. On Wednesday, architects Randy Fromberg, Bob Shelton, and Drew Cummings met once more with elementary teachers and staff, to finalize design plans. Members of the Blanco FFA Land, Range and Plant ID Teams are off to a strong start after competing in five different events to begin their judging schedule the final week of September. Of the five contests that Blanco competed in, the local FFA Chapter won three and finished 2nd and 3rd in the other two. Blanco’s Range and Plant ID teams won top honors at the Comal-Guadalupe Plant ID competition in New Braunfels with Matt Pepper placing 2nd overall as an individual.

Blanco’s game with Mountain Valley was canceled last week due to a lightning storm, but the 8th grade Panthers displayed some lightning of their own this past week when they stormed over the Ingram Warriors by racking up over 400 yards of offense and 52 points. After being denied a touchdown [on a 97 yard kickoff return by Chase Horton] because of a penalty, the Panthers had to start their first drive on their 8-yard line.

The 7th grade Panthers showed great improvement in their 1st victory of the season against the Ingram Warriors on Thursday, October 6. Early in the first quarter, Kameron Martinez ran for Blanco’s first touchdown. The 2-point conversion was successful. The Panthers took the lead 8-0. After the Panther defense held the Warriors, the offense went to work again wirh Martinez making a 21-yard run.

The fight is fierce for a volleyball play-off position in District 8-2A. Blanco, Comfort, and Harper have battled five sets against each other with Comfort leading 4-0, Blanco standing at 3-1, and Harper at 2-2. Junction and Ingram each have three losses. Blanco fell to COmfort last Tuesday, October 4, with set scores of 17-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-22, and 15-6.

Duck slaughter attempt thwarted! Tuesday evening, October 4, two ducks were saved from certain death at Flat Rock. The beautiful birds’ feet were ensnared in fishing line which was caught in a bush on the bank. The flock had remained with their trapped members until a passerby was alerted by frantic movement in the weeds.

Well this wonderful rain is certainly going to help us keep Blanco beautiful. You can already see the green popping up in the dead grasses …the trees finally got a decent drink. They are looking greener and some leaves turning, but some that look like fall are actually dead leaves.

My father attended high school at the Academia Juarez in the little Mexican town of Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua. The town was nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains which provided ideal hunting and fishing for the men and boys of the community. On one particular break from school, my Dad went on a deer hunting expedition with several of his schoolmates.
