The Blanco FFA Land, Range & Pasture, Plant ID and Homesite Teams completed a very successful fall judging schedule this past week as they won the Area VII Championship for each event. The area competitions were held at Freeman Ranch in San Marcos and were sponsored by Texas State University. In Homesite, Philip Alvarado won high point individual with a perfect score followed by Carlin Green in 2nd, Ryan Edwards in 4th and Kenny Omo in 6th.

Attendees enjoyed a dinner under the tent on the courthouse grounds before lining up to bid on silent auction items. A lively street dance followed. A family fun festival, market day, and Texas Hold ‘Em tournament were held earlier in the day.

The Blanco Panther Band performed Saturday, October 15, at the Region 12 UIL Marching Contest at East Central High School and received a Division I rating, qualifying the band for the Area UIL Marching Contest on October 29, also to be held at East Central High School. Performance times will be announced in next week’s paper.

Several residents spoke at the October 11 meeting of the governing body of Blanco during the Public Comments portion in regards to the proposed signage ordinance developed by the Planning and Zoning Commission with help from the Blanco Chamber of Commerce. The American Legion Post 352 Blanco Texas is proud to host their annual Veterans Parade and Chili & Bean Fundraiser Dinner on November 12, 2011. Workers are putting the finishing touches on the new addition to the Blanco Good Samaritan Center at 7th and Pecan here in Blanco. Planning began nearly a year ago for the construction of the wing that now houses the Center’s food pantry. Valuable contributions from the community included monetary donations, gifts of materials and labor.

With the economic downturn, the Good Samaritan Center on Pecan St. helps around 150 families with its food pantry. The center, which is run completely by volunteers and funded by donations, also sells clothing and other items in the thrift store and provides financial aid for families in need. A community yard sale will be held on Saturday, November 12, from 8am to 4pm at Security State Bank on Highway 281, across Blanco Ave.

Two events mark happy occasions at Rain Bird Gallery. First, a ribbon cutting for Downtown Blanco Antiques and Furnishings is scheduled for Friday, October 21, at 5:00pm. A wine and cheese party will follow. On Saturday, October 22, from 9:00am to 5:00pm the Annual Open House for Rain Bird Gallery will be celebrated. I was born in Dodge City, Kansas. I belonged to the Boot Hill Saddle Club and rode in horse shows almost every weekend. I graduated from Dodge City High School in 1958. I then married and had three children; Cindy, Sandy, and Dale. I have lived in Oklahoma, Colorado, and Arkansas, then moved to Blanco in 2001.

Have you visited Blanco Pioneer Museum yet? Well, if you haven’t, you need to take a stroll through the exceptional World War II exhibit in the museum. You will find quite a history lesson. We had a family come in this past weekend that makes it all worth our time and work - a mother, father and their two sons.

As part of a weekend of remembrance and fun in commemoration of Veteran’s Day, a Tolling of the Bells will be held in the Blanco Historic Cemetery on Saturday, November 12. Blanco was settled by Texas Rangers who had passed through the area while on missions. Captain James Hughes Callahan, who stopped in the area in 1835 while chasing Comanches and Mexican bandits, returned in 1853 with friend Eli Hinds to build log cabins.

John Watson, Blanco volunteer, supervises the sunscope at the October 15 Blanco Market Days. Equipped with a special filter that enables observation of the sun without damage to the eyes, visitors were able to see sun spots, giant electromagnetic storms on the surface of the sun. The observation station was sponsored by Blanco State Park to promote the upcoming Stars in the Park event starting at 5:30pm on Saturday, November 19.

Six participating Chapters of District 5, Section 3, Grand Chapter of Texas, Order of the Eastern Star, held a banquet on October 12 at the Blanco Masonic Lodge. A chuck wagon dinner was served to attendees. The next day, the chapters hosted “Daisy Daze” Eastern Star School of Instruction at the Old Blanco County Courthouse.

The Blanco County Historical Commission invites everyone to attend its annual meeting on Monday, October 24, at 6pm. The event will be held at the PEC Headquarters at 201 South Avenue S in Johnson City. A covered dish dinner will be served – meat and drink will be provided, so please being a side dish or dessert to share. A program entitled “Honoring Our Veterans, Preserving Their Story” will be presented by Duncan McGhee at 7pm.

Two men were out hunting and were charged by a grizzly bear. Out of fright they dropped their guns and one climbed a tree and the other sought refuge in a cave. The bear smiled on his good fortune and decided to sit and wait for his meals. The man in the cave suddenly appeared and then ran back into the cave.

Harold G. Barnes (Barney), a native of West Terre Haute, Indiana, was born on July 8, 1927, and passed away Friday, October 14, 2011. He was 84. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Shirley; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Andree’; grandson Zachariah; and brother, Bob Barnes. Dear Editor, The federal government could learn a lot from the Blanco Independent School District (BISD). I was pleased to read that the BISD has again earned a superior financial integrity achievement rating from the Texas Education Agency. I want to commend all of the BISD faculty and teachers who have worked to make that achievement possible.

Dear Editor, The public should acknowledge, with thanks to all Pedernales Electric Cooperative directors, the approval in August of a resolution by the PEC board of a commitment to protect the beauty of the hill country night skies. PEC has pledged to work with land owners, businesses, communities and public entities to reduce and modify the use of outdoor lighting that is starting to produce such glare that we are losing the beauty of our night skies here in the hill country.

AUSTIN, Texas – As people are becoming more aware of the different kinds of unclaimed property out there and the very real possibility that money could be waiting for them, Better Business Bureau reports of a scam that uses the promise of finding unclaimed money to lure people in. This new scam comes in the form of an email telling people they have “millions of dollars” in unclaimed money.

The 7th grade football team defeated the Marion Bulldogs on October 13. The Panthers scored in the 1st quarter on a 2-yard run by Kameron Martinez. The 2-point conversion pass from QB Garrett Seales to Sebastian Thomas was successful. In the 2nd quarter, Thomas returned an interception 42 yards for the Blanco touchdown and Martinez rushed for the 2-point conversion. For the offense, Martinez carried the ball 19 times for 97 yards.

The JV football team posted a strong win over the Marion Bulldogs on Thursday, October 13. Aikman Elrod set the pace for the Panthers with a 45-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. QB McKay Adamson hit Carson Kipp in the end zone for the 2-point conversion, putting the Panthers up 8-0.

By Jason Marek While the Panther offense set the tone in their district opening win against Ingram, Blanco’s defense turned heads this past week at Marion as the Panthers almost pulled off an improbable upset on the Bulldogs home field. The Panther defense was actually responsible for the game’s first points as DE Matt Pepper intercepted a Marion screen pass and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown.

The 8th graders played away this week, visiting an expected tough opponent, the Marion Bulldogs. The first half displayed high-powered offense by both teams, with each one scoring on each possession… almost. The leading rusher for Blanco was Adrian Dominguez, stacking up 180 rushing yards; altogether, the Panthers combined for over 370 yards of offense. On October 11, the ladies took a road trip trip to Junction and packed home victories over the Lady Eagles. The varsity won 3-0 with set scores of 25-17, 25-20, and 25-9. Abbey Weaver led the team, slamming ten kills. She also hit two service aces and had two blocks. Lindsey Jenkins set the ball to the hitters 26 times and Alex Gustafson made 17 digs. The JV won their game with set scores of 19-25, 25-13, and 25-19.

The cross country team competed in the Vista Ridge Cross Country Meet in Austin on Saturday, October 15. Meaghen Seales won the girl’s division with a time of 12:27. Courtney Schroeder ran the race in a time of 15:04. Rance Dollahite ran with a time of 19:31 in the boy’s division. In a meet at Comfort on October 8, Meaghen also took first place with a time of 13:30. The cross country District 8-2A meet is scheduled for Wednesday, October 26.

I had the opportunity last school year to substitute teach for a coach at Blanco High School. The last period of each school day was spent in the weight training room with a group of boys, some of whom were there because of off-season football and others were there because they needed physical education credit.

October 20, 1961 Members of the Blanco Band and Bad Boosters were engaged this week in selling tickets to the Cole Circus which would be shown in the Blanco State Park. The famous circus, which is celebrating its 51st year, would bring a fine exhibit of circus entertainment and outstanding exhibits to the community.
