Blanco Police Department Officer Tammie Ross was named Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by The Hill Country Children’s Advocacy Center. She accepted her award at a ceremony held on Saturday, October 15. “People Helping People” is the motto of the Good Samaritan Center. Local citizens gathered at the Good Samaritan Center on Tuesday morning, October 25, for the dedication of the newly constructed wing. Blanco County residents who need to visit the driver’s license office will have to go outside the county. The office closed in February when the offices in the old annex made the move to the new building. “This office has closed due to problems resulting from an aging driver license system,” the Texas Department of Public Safety website explains.

17-year-old LBJ High School senior Adam Lefford died in a fatal car accident on Saturday morning outside Blanco, the Department of Public Safety told KEYE TV News. KEYE reported that the vehicle, a Toyota Forerunner, was traveling northbound on Rocky Road when it left the roadway and hit a tree near Cottonwood Rd.

Long time Blanco resident Denise Cole has been undergoing treatment for cancer, and will soon be going through surgery to remove cancerous tumors on her throat and tongue. She is in need of financial assistance to pay for fuel for travel to and from radiation treatments and doctor appointments, prescriptions, food and other necessities while she is unable to work.

On October 16, Kathryn Honeycutt represented Blanco County in the 2011 Miss Pre-Teen San Antonio pageant competition. She was the 4th runner-up and has been invited to compete at the national level in Orlando, Florida this December. To help fund the trip, there will be a car wash at Blanco Floral from 12-3 this Saturday, October 29, and a bake sale at Super S on Sunday, October 30, from 10-2.

After being asked and turning down the wonderful invitation to chair the gala for 2011, I reconsidered and agreed to do it. The 18th Live Oak School Reunion was held on October 15 at the Masonic Lodge with 22 in attendance. Nine school members were present. The school, located on Old River Road at the old Flugrath Store, closed in the early 1940s and the property was later purchased by Marvin and the late Lorie Stetler.

Three organizations in Blanco are hosting a weekend of remembrance and fun in commemoration of Veteran’s Day. Blanco Pioneer Museum will be hosting a barbecue dinner on Friday, November 11, at the museum at 418 Pecan St, from 6pm to 8pm. Following the dinner will be a live auction and dance from 8pm until 11pm.

On Saturday, October 22, the city of Blanco experienced a bit of history in the making. If you did not have a chance to make it out to the grand opening and the ribbon cutting for the Buggy Barn Museum, you missed a wonderful fun-filled day. From the live music by some of the local gentlemen who really kept the day moving, to the chuck wagon outdoor lunch that included a wonderful Buffalo Chili.

The Blanco Bowling Club had the 2011 Summer-Fall Roll-offs on October 18 and 19. In round one, the first place team was team #9; Capt. Lynn Maly and Shelli Maly, Barbara Maly and Dottie Delavan, Virgie McHugh and Harvey Rust bowled against the fourth place team #11; Capt. To the 2001 State Champions, I apologize for not being able to attend, but as Coach Emerson and I are at Medina Valley we are playing our district opponent, McCollum Friday night. Though we have been gone for 10 years from Blanco, my family and I will always cherish those three years at Blanco.

Bring your children and grandchildren to eat a hotdog and win prizes on Halloween night, from 5pm to 7pm, at First Baptist Church, where we are holding the 2nd Annual Light Night For Jesus presented by Blanco area churches. Night Light For Jesus shows children of all ages that Halloween night doesn't have to be scary, and that God loves them through God's Word shared with them.

Gerald Hugo”Jerry” Fuchs, Jr., age 61 of Waller, Texas, passed away on October 24, 2011. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Helen Ruth Fuchs; and is survived by his wife Becky Fuchs; son, Joshua Fuchs; sisters Carole Peltier and husband Don, Susie Griesemer and husband Mike, Diane Hovas and husband John as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. Jerry was a blessed man to have survived cancer at the age of 19.

This Saturday, October 29, the Blanco High School Marching Band will march at 2:30pm at East Central High School in San Antonio. Advancement to finals will be announced at 4:30pm and finals will begin at 7:45pm. There will be 26 2A bands at Area. Ten bands will advance to the finals and the top five go to State.

Against their biggest rivals, the JV team traveled to Comfort and found a fired-up Bobcat squad looking to upset the Panthers. Blanco received the opening kick-off but fumbled it away on the first series. This allowed Comfort a short field to drive in for the game’s initial touchdown, putting the Bobcats up 8-0.

After a close lose at the hands of Marion two weeks ago, the Blanco Panthers bounced back in a major way defeating the visiting Comfort Bobcats 42 to 10. En route to the victory, the Panthers scored the game’s first 6 touchdowns as they improved to 4 and 4 on the season. The first quarter of play saw just one score as QB Tanner Rogers bulled his way into the end zone from four yards out.

On October 18, the Lady Panthers took a road trip to Harper and brought home a sweet 3-0 victory with set scores of 25-18, 25-21, and 25-13. The win sealed a play-off position for the Panthers. The freshman squad also scored a 2-0 sweep, while the JV fell in a 1-2 battle. On October 21, the Comfort Deer came to Blanco to fight for their first place position in the District 8-2A standings.

The 8th grade Panthers had a tough battle this past week when they hosted the Comfort Bobcats. Both teams displayed quality offensive and defensive skills. The game ended in a tie; however, this battle could have turned out much differently if it wasn’t for official interference or lack thereof… enough said.

The Panthers began the game with a strong defensive stand and held the Bobcats on 4th down to take possession; however, the Blanco offense fumbled and Comfort took over on the 5-yard line. On 2nd down, from the 4-yard line, the Bobcats scored on a run. The extra point failed and Comfort took the lead 0-6. In the 2nd quarter, the Panther offense moved down the field on a 10-yard pass from QB Garrett Seales to Sebastian Thomas, followed by a 15-yard run by Logan Parker.

Christmas is in the air… believe it or not, one month from Tuesday Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive in Blanco and we will light up the town. Music will play and all the Christmas lights come on at 6:00pm. The Christmas festivities begin. We will be having events for 3 weekends beginning on Friday, November 25.

Early in my career as an educator, I had the opportunity to provide a series of workshops for some school administrators. I was fresh out of college back then and, of course, with my new degree in hand I supposed I knew all there was to know about teaching. My motivation was to make a little extra money to help my young family with expenses.

October 26, 1962 Mr. and Mrs. Arthur S. Ross of Blanco observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary at “The Oaks,” their home on Highway 281 South. More than 200 guests called during the afternoon to wish the couple many happy returns on this golden wedding anniversary. • Football fans in the Blanco area paid $663.79 to watch the “Old Pros” and the “All Stars” in a benefit game to pay off the debt on the new illuminated scoreboard.
