The trustees of the Blanco Independent School District held their regular monthly meeting on Monday night, November 14. Trustees present were Darrel Wagner, Matt Herden, Kirk Felps, Troy Immel, and Tim Nance. Blanco High School Principal Dustin Barton reported that last week’s football game against Edna was exciting and a nail-biter.

The community turned out on Saturday morning, November 12, to honor veterans with a parade around the square. The American Legion hosted the event, followed by a chili and bean dinner to help raise funds for the post. Photos by Willard Gibbons.

Following a public hearing, members of the governing body of Blanco passed a revised signage ordinance at their regular meeting November 8. The ordinance, developed by the Planning and Zoning Commission based on a model from Dripping Springs, received input from the Chamber of Commerce and other community organizations. Blanco Historic Commission chair Retta Martin spoke in support of the ordinance, as did P&Z member Matt Lewis and chamber president Liz Waller-Broyal.

Blanco Police Officer Tammie Ross responded to a call around 7:15am about a tractor-trailer hitting a tree in the Hill Country Liquor parking lot on Friday morning, November 11. Officer Ross arrived to see this scene—a truck had attempted to turn around by going behind the liquor store and the driver hadn’t anticipated such low branches.

The Blanco Masonic Lodge has announced that the annual Ernie R. Davis, Jr. memorial “Care and Share Dinner” will be held on Saturday, November 19, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., or until the food runs out. The Lodge is located on the southwest corner of US Hwy 281 and Eleventh St.

Friday evening's reception for Zena Stetka Howe had a great turnout with many art fans from Johnson City and Blanco in attendance. Wine and hors d'oeuvres were provided by Uptown Blanco Restaurant, and everyone had a great time.

The Stars in the Park program is set for this Saturday, November 19, in Blanco State Park. The party begins at 5:30pm at the pavilion. Admission is the cost of entry into the state park – $4 per adult, kids 12 and under free. You don’t need to know anything about the skies above–astronomers will be teaching everyone all about what can be seen in our skies. Dear Editor, I am writing to express our heartfelt thanks to the residents of Blanco and Johnson City for the wheelchair ramp that was built for me on Veterans day. I am a disabled veteran who has had to undergo numerous surgeries to try to preserve my mobility which has deteriorated severely this last year.

BHS Spanish II students celebrated Día de los muertos by creating and presenting (in Spanish) memory boxes “tumbas” in order to honor a person or to poke fun at themselves. They also enjoyed traditional beverages -horchata and atole - along with pan (bread) de los muertos and calavera (skeleton) cookies.

The Blanco FFA Chapter sent eight members to the 3rd Annual San Antonio International Farm & Ranch Show held this past week at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. Blanco FFA members Kenzie Johnson, Brittany Holder, Ryan Wagner, Katelyn Bradfute, Kellam Nabers, Alex Gustafson, James Leachman, and Callie Culton assisted with registration, surveys and welcoming guests and vendors as they arrived.

The Blanco Panthers picked a great time to play one of their best games of the year this past Friday in La Vernia when they defeated the Edna Cowboys 21 to 20 and advanced to the area round of the state play-offs. The Panthers used an opportunistic defense and a time-consuming offense to win the Bi-District Championship and improve to 6 and 5 on the year. I live off Hwy. 281 about 3 miles from downtown Blanco toward Johnson City. The plants that froze at my place were four-o-clocks. Downtown at City Hall, the four-o-clocks and lantana were nipped and they had to be trimmed. It just goes to show that different areas in the same town can have different climates.

A few years ago a man went on a rampage from California to Texas killing and maiming several people. He was apprehended near Van Horn, Texas, where he was incarcerated, tried and convicted of murder. During the trial a local minister testified that, while in jail, the perpetrator had found the Lord, was a new man and that he should be shown mercy.

November 12, 1965 Blanco and Johnson City telephone users would be able to dial each other direct and without a long distance charge beginning early in 1966. Announcement of the final arrangements for extended area service (EAS) between the two cities was made by John S. Skinner, Service Center Manager. Approval of the EAS plan was given by the City Commission at Blanco and the City Council at Johnson City.
