In his annual audit of Blanco Independent School District’s finances, Keith Neffendorf of Neffendorf, Knopp, Doss & Associates, P. C. reported that the district is “in good financial shape” in spite of a small decrease in the fund balance last year. He explained that the purpose of an audit is to give an opinion on the financial reports of the district, which he said are correct.

The board of directors of the Blanco Historic Cemetery Association met on Monday evening, December 12, to review the new constitution and bylaws. Directors Gail McClellan, Connie Russell, Rebecca Howerton, Diane Hostetler, and Clara Gourley were present.
A committee of members was given the task, nearly a year ago, of revising the association’s constitution and bylaws to reconcile the conflicts in the two documents.

In an annual reminder to taxpayers, the Internal Revenue Service announced this week that it is looking to return $153.3 million in undelivered tax refund checks. In all, 99,123 taxpayers are due refund checks this year that could not be delivered because of mailing address errors.
Undelivered refund checks average $1,547 this year.
Taxpayers who believe their refund check may have been returned to the IRS as undelivered should use the "Where's My Refund?"

On December 6, the Lady Panther varsity team downed the Randolph RoHawks, 61-37, following the JV’s overwhelming 52-12 victory.
Justine Cooley led the varsity with 14 points, followed by Lindsey Jenkins with 11 points. Leslie McClinton and Kayla Martinez each scored ten, followed by Meaghen Seales with eight, Micaela Klein with four, Felicia Skillman with two, and Elise Edmondson and Reagan Rogers each sank one point on a free throw.

Zachariah Barnes volunteered as Santa for the children to have "Free Pictures with Santa" on Saturday at the Old Blanco County Courthouse before going to Live Oak Medical Center to visit the residents.
It was a large turnout, and not only with the kids. Word got out to the gals in town and quite a few dropped by to sit on Santa's lap.

The Tigers–Conner H., Jonathon H., Cole T., and Haden R.–visited editor Charles Willgren at the Blanco County News office on Thursday afternoon to hear about how the newspaper is created as well as all the other publications created in the BCN office. The scouts also asked questions about the production and printing of the newspapers.

Wednesday, December 7, was the day of the annual Blanco Woman's Club Silver Tea. It was held at Diane Turner's home, which is a lovely home in itself, but, with all the Christmas decorations, it was a sight to behold! The serving table was awash with goodies, not the least of which was the soup ladled from a cut glass bowl.

On Saturday, December 17, Tots Need Toys will hand out gifts to families in need for children ages birth through twelve years of age. This year’s event will be held at Blanco United Methodist Church, located on the corner of Pecan and First Street beginning at 11:00am.
Those in need of assistance are requested to bring a current drivers license, utility bill, or Blanco Independent School District report card to show residency within the area.

Blanco First Baptist Church held its annual Children’s Christmas Choir Concert on Sunday, December 11. This year’s performance was titled “Christmas in Reverse” and told the story of Jesus’ birth as well as the significant events leading up to it. Members of the church’s choir participated, donning sheep ears and singing a special song.

Funeral services for Ida Marie Edge, 76, Palestine, Texas, formerly of Moody, Missouri, will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 19, 2011, at Moody Church of Christ, Moody, Missouri under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home, West Plains, Missouri.
Mrs. Edge died Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at Palestine, Texas. She was born November 8, 1935, at Austin, Texas, to William Dempsey and Ruby Elizabeth Vining Barber.

Frances Sealy Heslep, 78, of Abilene, passed away Saturday, November 12, 2011, at Hendrick Hospice Care. Graveside services were held at 2:00pm Monday, November 14, 2011, at the Putnam Cemetery. Rev. Price Mathieson and Chuck Hutchins officiated. The family received friends from 11:00am to 12:30pm, prior to the graveside service, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
Frances was born in McCullough County on July 27, 1933, to Frank and Ida E.

Dear Editor,
There is a very big problem in this county that everyone should be made aware of. There is a very poor prosecution for juvenile sex offenders.
There is one case that is conformed of a juvenile sex offense and it was thrown out “due to lack of evidence,” nevertheless, when someone admits to doing something illegal, as this juvenile did, they are guilty.

Well, I didn’t think I could be amazed again after the Veterans Parade, however, this community and it’s great people have completely astounded and blessed me. We appreciate all who came out to participate in the Christmas Parade and those who lined to street in the rain to watch it.

The Blanco FFA has completed a very successful first semester of competition in career development events as well as leadership development events. Overall, the Blanco FFA won 12 district titles, qualified 14 teams for area competition winning 4 area championships, as well as qualifying 4 teams for state with another team serving as a state alternate.

Blanco Middle School is proud of their victory at the District 8-AA UIL Academic Competition held here last Wednesday, December 7. In the past twenty-two years, the middle school has captured twenty first place district titles because of the enthusiasm and preparation of the students, teachers, parents, and administrators of our district.

The boys’ basketball team opened their season in the Center Point Tournament over the weekend, going 2-1 and earning third place. Junior Sam Isenberg was selected as a standout player for the tournament, garnering an all-tournament team selection.

The Panthers opened their game and their season quickly, jumping out to a 15-5 first quarter lead over the Eagles.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has announced that the Blanco High School Panthers football team has been named the Army Strong Team of the Week for Division 2A in Week 13.
The Panthers were chosen for this honor because of their teamwork, dedication, discipline, personal courage, and integrity, values shared by U.

The middle school boys played Harper at home on December 12. The 7th grade “B” team won overwhelmingly 20-2. Jacob Robinson led the team with six points. Steven Flores, Pablo Guajardo, and Jake Mangol each scored four points, nad Kris Enriquez made two points.
The 8th grade “B” team recorded a decisive 36-10 win.

The annual Powder Puff football game was held on December 7 at Panther Stadium. The undefeated Class of 2012 took on the juniors for bragging rights. The seniors won 29-14.

Texans have been concerned with dead animals along the roadsides for over 138 years. In April of 1874, the Legislature of the State of Texas enacted a law to prevent the leaving of dead animals in the public highways, roads or streets or alleys (or within 50 yards of them) of any village, town or city.

A couple of years ago on the lawn in front of the old Blanco County Courthouse, Maggie Goodman spun a yarn about how a little boy invented the luminaria.
He was trying to light up his little house in the country so the “pastores” or shepherds would be able to find his place and seek shelter there on their way to visit the Christ child.
He found that if he took a regular brown paper bag and placed a candle in it, it would glow with a beautiful, soft light.

A new recreation room had been added to the Apollo Hut facilities for the use of young people. Just recently completed and equipped with game tables, coin operated pinball machine and billiard table, the recreation room would be ready for the Grand Opening of the Apollo Hut on Saturday, December 14.
