Blanco Masonic Lodge #216 hosted its annual Take Time To Read awards dinners this week for students and their parents who participated in the program. “Reading is the key to everything,” said Lodge Master Sam Mowery when talking about the program. “Once a person can read, then the whole world is opened up to them.

At their regular meeting January 10, members of the governing body of Blanco voted to order the election May 12, 2012, for places currently held by Rebecca Howerton, Martin Sauceda, and Al Turner. The term of office is two years. Information on filing can be obtained by calling city hall. In the Public Comments portion of the meeting, resident Mary Ann Millard complained about the poor quality of paving on Blanco Avenue and Jones Avenue.

Blanco State Park holds a special place in the hearts of Blanco residents, as well as those who return year after year to camp beside the beautiful Blanco River. In a recent interview via e-mail, it was heartening to hear the optimism of recently-hired Park Superintendent Ethan Belicek, who was greatly influenced by the public support of the park when he made the decision to relocate here from South Texas with his family.

The Subway burglary in Johnson City has been solved, reported JCPD Chief of Police Randy Holland. A confidential agreement has been made between the restaurant owner, Robin Gilliland, and the person or persons responsible for the theft of $1,024. Chief Holland investigated the burglary and reported his findings to Gilliland. Gilliland made the decision not to prosecute at this time, knowing that he has five years to proceed with filing charges and prosecution in what would be a felony case of ...

The 74th Blanco County 4-H and FFA Youth Show begins Thursday, January 26, at the Blanco County Show Barn in Johnson City. This year there are more than 550 entries. These leaders of tomorrow put in many hours, and often times, a lot their hard-earned money working towards a successful project and show.

Max Joseph Sanders was born in San Antonio on December 21, 2011, at 1:20pm. He weighed 8 pounds, 1 ounce, and was 20 3/4 inches long. He is welcomed by his parents, Kelly and Gretchen Sanders of Blanco; big brother Jake; and grandparents Jim and Marla Sanders of Blanco, and Jerry and Frances Leist of Angleton.

The Blanco Chamber of Commerce welcomed a new business member and held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Hanks, Wallace & Associates, LLP, located at 700 4th St., on Friday, January 13. Our local toy drive, Tots Need Toys, was a huge success this year, thanks to the generosity of the citizens of Blanco County. The event was organized by members of New Hope Lutheran, St. Ferdinand’s Catholic Church, and Blanco United Methodist Church. This year we served 182 children who reside in Blanco County.

Gem of the Hills hosted the Lunches of Love recipients on January 13. They enjoyed potato soup provided by Tanja Thomlinson and New Hope Lutheran Church. Susan Marshall played beautiful harp music. Phil Parker was gracious enough to give transportation and potato soup ingredients.

The local Blanco FFA Chapter hosted the 15th Annual Blanco FFA Chapter Livestock Show on January 6 and 7. With more than 150 animals exhibited, this proved to be one of the largest shows to date. On Friday, the show began with the lambs, where senior Alex Gustafson won Grand Champion honors with her Champion Medium Wool.

The Blanco powerlifting teams demonstrated their strength at the Southland meet in San Antonio on January. The team lifted their way to first place for the boys and third place for the girls. Winning a first place in their individual weight classes were Phil Alvarado, Mason LeBlanc, Cody Perez, Noah Tresselt, Erica Flores, Monica Flores, and Katherine Biggs.

Middle school girls vs. Junction – The MS girls’ teams played Junction on January 12. The 7th grade team lost 18-24. Scorers were Andrea Calzoncit with 10 points, and Gracie Edmondson and Hannah Hulber with 4 each. The 8th grade team lost 1-26. Middle school boys vs. Junction – The boys’ teams also played Junction on January 12.

The Blanco varsity girls’ team had a cold shooting, losing 35-45 to the Junction Eagles on January 10. It seemed as though the Panthers were saving the points for the trip to Comfort on January 13, where the out-scored the Deer, 77-59. In the loss to the Eagles, Lindsey Jenkins and Leslie McClinton led the team with 8 points each.

The boys’ basketball rivalry between Blanco and Comfort has grown to resemble the football rivalry more and more. While the football team routinely chalks up wins in October, the boys’ basketball team has now taken six of the last seven games after years of frustration. The Panthers were able to extend their streak Friday night in Comfort behind a 19-4 run to start the game en route to a 52-33 victory to open district play. The Christmas decorations are down but they are not put away. With the help of the city, we purchased a building from Jeanette and Bobby Fishbeck. It was moved into the park on Wednesday. We still need to add shelves and pegs in order to store decorations. It’s time to sharpen the tools and prepare for spring planting.

It was almost 7 p.m. in Mexico City, 1968. One and a half hours earlier the winners of the 26 mile Olympic marathon had crossed the finish line. It had been a grueling hot day as the 7,000 foot altitude took its toll on all the athletes. The sky was beginning to darken and most of the stadium was empty.

There was a fantastic turnout for Al Turner's benefit at Redbud Friday night. I hope, from the majorly positive response, that Al knows now how much we all care about him and how important he is to Blanco. “Dry River Gang” played from 6:30 until 9:00pm, offering an eclectic mix of tunes.
