The Harlem Ambassadors came to Blanco last Thursday to take on the Blanco All-Stars. Blanco suffered a loss, 43 to 107, but the antics of the Ambassadors entertained the crowd and the event raised funds for Blanco EMS and Blanco Chamber of Commerce.

Tickets are available for the critically acclaimed ensemble REVEL to speak to the hearts of Hill Country residents through music on Saturday, February 4. The entertainment will take place downtown in the intimate atmosphere of the Uptown Blanco Ballroom on Blanco's Main Street at 7:30.

The Blanco-Pedernales Groundwater Conservation District has reduced the Drought Status in Blanco County from Stage 3 down to Stage 1. This decision was based on current weather conditions, recent rainfall events, and lower groundwater demand during the winter months. General Manager Ron Fieseler says that Blanco County is still in a drought situation, but we have a few months during the winter where we can catch our breath and see what happens between now and spring.

Retired Pedernales Electric Cooperative board president R.B. Felps filed a lawsuit against the electric cooperative in December after the current board voted to discontinue the Medicare supplemental insurance program, paid for by the cooperative, that covered the former director. The Hill Country 100 Club paid honors to area law enforcement, firefighters and emergency medical service personnel of Blanco, Burnet, Llano and Lampasas Counties at their annual membership and awards banquet Thursday, January 19, 2012, at the Lakeside Pavilion in Marble Falls, Texas. Meals on Wheels will continue to call Trinity Lutheran home and will keep serving meals to seniors in and around Blanco on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Combined Community Action, which is a separate program from Meals on Wheels and is known as the Senior Activity Center, is tentatively looking at moving to Johnson City, said center director Liz Begay.

A great chase is taking place across the night sky. Orion the hunter, with his familiar belt, has his trusty hunting companion dogs, Canis Major and Canis Minor in hot pursuit of the rabbit, Lepus. On Saturday, February 11, at 6:00pm visitors to Blanco State Park have an opportunity to see this great chase being acted out in the stars at “Stars in the Park.” Volunteer astronomers will guide visitors through the star clusters, constellations and galaxies that can be seen that night.

“Gentlemen, start your cars!” Cub Scout Pack 497 held their annual Pinewood Derby on Sunday, January 29, at the United Methodist Church. The race was a double elimination and each boy had the opportunity to race more than one race. The derby was well attended by parents, grandparents, friends, and siblings. Out of 18 entrants this year, the three winners who will represent Blanco in the district derby are Cole Tharp in first place, Morgan Lockwood in second and Joshua Neill in third.

The San Antonio Livestock Exposition (S.A.L.E.) Ambassador Committee visited Blanco recently while touring the communities in the area to promote the Stock Show & Rodeo. February 4 will be the fifth year that the Western Heritage Parade Sub-Committee of the Ambassador Committee will officially “kick off” the 63rd annual show with a parade in downtown San Antonio. The 2012 Blanco Lavender Festival Steering Committee announced a search for an official art piece to use as the central marketing theme for the highly successful annual event. The Blanco County Appraisal District has received many calls concerning agricultural use during this drought. On June 24, 2011, the United States Department of Agriculture issued Secretarial Disaster Declaration S3122, which designated 213 Texas counties as primary natural disaster areas; this included Blanco County. Then on October 31, 2011, Governor Perry re-issued a Disaster Proclamation for Exceptional Drought Conditions, and, unfortunately, Blanco County again made the list.

On Wednesday, December 28, 2011, 26-year-old Mystle Brown and her 20-month-old daughter, Faith, were in Harper visiting Mystle’s mother, Judy Houston, for the day. AUSTIN – Attorney General Greg Abbott on Jan. 23 filed a lawsuit in the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals to push the U.S. Department of Justice to approve the voter I.D. law enacted by the Texas Legislature last spring. The law has not been given the required preclearance by the Department of Justice.

To help students pay for the high cost of a college education, The GVTC Foundation is significantly increasing its Ola Armstrong Scholarship to $10,000. The Armstrong scholarship was first awarded in May 2011, to Kate Murphy of Smithson Valley High School, in the amount of $3,000. Ms. Murphy is currently attending Tarleton State University.

The varsity Panthers were fired up for the 2nd round district game against the Junction Lady Eagles on Tuesday, January 24. The energy served the team well as they secured a 42-38 win. In the first meeting of the teams, the Eagles won 45-35. The Panthers were led by senior Lindsey Jenkins, who scored 10 points.

A year ago, the Blanco boys’ basketball team came into the Junction game riding a nice wave of momentum and with an opportunity to pretty much end the playoff chances of the 0-2 Junction Eagles. They failed to do so, and that failure ended up costing the team a playoff spot at the end of the season.

“U.S. Economy Picks Up Steam” was a headline in this past weekend’s Wall Street Journal. The article continued to state that the U.S. economy grew at its fastest pace in 18 months for the fourth quarter as companies re-stocked their shelves. U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), which is the value of all goods and services and a barometer of the nation’s economic health, grew at an annual rate of 2.8% in the final quarter of the year, the Commerce Department reported this past Friday.

How about that rain? We had three inches at our house; many people in Blanco received more. The rain is very good for the Spring wildflowers. I’m expecting a beautiful flower show this year. When your flowers begin to sprout, don’t neglect to thin them for correct spacing. Then you may move them to another area or place the extras in pots or give them away to friends. We have removed about one-half of the dead and frozen plants from the downtown area.

A shipwrecked mariner washed up on the shore of a deserted island, barely clinging to life. Upon recovering some of his strength, he managed to salvage a few things from the derelict ship and built a crude shelter to protect his scant belongings and for refuge from the elements. He prayed and prayed for rescue but it didn’t come.

February 4, 1966 Mr. and Mrs. Herman Riba assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Joe D. Riba honored Mr. Fritz Koch on his ninety-sixth birthday at the Blanco Mill Nursing Home. Mr. Koch was born at Twin Sisters January 13, 1870. He lived in that community until a year previous when he came to the nursing home.
