At the March 5 meeting of the Blanco Independent School District board of trustees, the monthly Spotlight on Students recognized the Panther Band percussion ensemble. Principal Dustin Barton recognized members of the ensemble – Charity Windham, Alina Aly, and Forrest Jones – who have advanced to state competition, to be held in Pflugerville in May.

Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park proudly announces the opening of a new exhibit recognizing the Lady Bird Johnson Centennial Celebration that continues throughout 2012. This exhibit will be on display in the Park’s Visitor Center at 100 E. Ladybird Lane in Johnson City through December 22, the anniversary of the First Lady’s 100th birthday.

Blanco resident Bob Morgan announces he is entering the race for Blanco County Sheriff. The Republican primary elections are scheduled for May 29, 2012. Morgan is a native Texan and was born and raised in Harlingen, Texas.  He attended high school in San Antonio where he attended Peacock Military Academy.  Upon graduation from high school, he joined the US Army and served in Vietnam. James and Elizabeth Faurie of Wichita Falls, Texas, announce the marriage of Danielle Faurie to Drew Wisnewski, son of Bill and Denise Wisnewski of San Antonio, Texas. Blanco resident Virginia Kloster is proud to announce that her 16-year-old granddaughter, Crystal Lynn Anderson, of Omaha, Nebraska, has been selected to be a “basket carrier” for the athletes competing in the Olympic Swim Trials in Omaha during the month of June. Crystal is a junior at Benson High School in Omaha and has the distinction of being named “Most Improved Swimmer of the Year” for her school and will have her name inscribed on a plaque to remain at the school.

The Blanco All Sports Booster Club will be holding their annual fish fry on Saturday, March 24, from 2pm to 6pm. The event will be held at the Blanco Panther Stadium concession stand. William “Bill” O’Dell Hines, 87, of Kingsland, TX, passed away March 15, 2012. He was born March 22, 1924, to James Linsey Hines and Vester O’Dell (McCay) Hines in Bradley, AR. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Nora Maxine Waxler Dixon Hines on November 18, 2010; three brothers, five sisters, his dog buddy in 2003 and his grandcat, Pumkin in 2012. Bill was the 9th of ten children.

The past couple of weeks have seen several local youth place animals in the premium sale at the annual San Antonio Livestock Exposition. Overall, 11 animals from Blanco qualified for the auction in their respective species while several others just missed out on placing high enough to sell. The first week of the market animals featured the market lambs and goats.

On the final day of the San Antonio Livestock Show, 15 members of the Blanco FFA Chapter competed in the Livestock Judging Competition. The contest consisted of placing and question classes over the four main species of livestock: sheep, swine, cattle, and goats. The officials for the contest were the Texas A&M Judging Team, who recently won the collegiate division at the San Antonio Livestock Show. In the senior division, Blanco’s two teams finished 9th and 27th out of 251 teams.

Blanco needs a pace car program. Many residents of the town have complained about the speed of traffic, especially along 281 and 1623 (4th Street). One resident even followed a speeding driver into El Charro to remind him of the proper mph in town only to be told that “These hillbillies are so stupid around here they couldn’t read a radar gun if they had one.” (Blanco County News July 14, 2011). While attending school at Brigham Young University I obtained employment as an Operating Room orderly at a local hospital. It was one of the most interesting jobs I have ever had. It was my privilege to pick up patients in their rooms and transport them to the OR and, after surgery, take them to Recovery and then back to their rooms.

Times are tough these days and everyone has to protect themselves. We hear too many times that contractors are taking money up front and not doing the job or taking money from the homeowner and not paying their subcontractors or paying for the materials. This really happens in disaster areas, but it can happen in our own backyard.

March 7, 1969 The Blanco High School Band, directed by Billy Harrell, received another honor when it was named Outstanding Class A Band in both Concert and Sight-Reading at the 21st- Annual Heart O’ Texas Band Festival in Brady. This was the fifth consecutive time that the Blanco band received honors at Brady.
