This photo gives a glimpse into Blanco history. Pharmacist Robert L. “Buster” Fulcher (of Fulcher’s Drugs, now Strickland Drugs) and Dr. John Flannery (of the Blanco Hospital, which was in the Old Blanco County Courthouse) pose with a dead mountain lion. Every year, hundreds of people visit the Franklin Family Ranch and enjoy the many activities provided by the Franklin family and their volunteers. The free, festive celebration of Easter will be held this Saturday, March 31, from 11am to 2pm. In an effort to share the word of Jesus Christ, the family began opening their ranch on Easter several years ago to the public and introducing them to the Word.

At a special meeting of the Blanco County Commissioners Court on March 27, Butch Crofts of Crofts Funeral Homes suggested that the Court consider using Central Texas Autopsy in Lockhart either in lieu of, or in addition to using the Medical Examiners from Travis County. “Judge Carter requested that we place this item on the agenda,” said County Judge Bill Guthrie.

I’m a lifelong, 5th generation rancher, working mostly the family property in north Bexar County (originated in 1848), but I always felt the calling of law enforcement.

A team of volunteers from Blanco and the area descended on Blanco State Park this past Saturday, working three or more hours to help remove a plant that’s invading the park. Annual Bastard-Cabbage (Rapistrum rugosum) grows one to five or more feet in height and has small, yellow flowers. The cabbage crowds out native plants, growing in parks, pastures and roadsides everywhere. The best way to remove the plant is to pull it, taproot and all. Rainfall is so vital to South Central Texas. Not only to replenish the lakes and aquifers, but for recreation, agriculture, and even landscaping. In order for meteorologists at the National Weather Service to better forecast and document rainfall and flooding, there is a need for volunteers in a program called Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS).

Private water wells should be tested annually. The Texas Well Owner Network, in partnership with the Blanco and Hays County Offices of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, the Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District, and the Texas Water Resources Institute, and with support from the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board, is providing a water well screening day for area residents on April 16, 2012.

Baker Guns, located at 2250 N. US Highway 281, is offering concealed handgun license (CHL) training and testing on Saturday, April 7. Since starting the classes in 2010, more than 100 local citizens have received their CHL through instruction at Baker Guns. Fifteen attended the last class on February 4. Mike Cox of Driftwood CHL leads the classes in the Baker conference room; attendees then head to the Baker Ranch just 5 miles north of Blanco for the range portion.

It’s almost time for one of the largest, if not the largest, Chili Cook Off in the world to take place at the Blanco County Fairgrounds, where men from Texas and beyond will compete to become the chili cooking champion. All the funds raised from this event are donated to local charities, making this extremely beneficial to Johnson City and Blanco County.

The American Legion Memorial Highway Post 352 and the Blanco Historic Cemetery are pleased to host a ceremony on Thursday, March 29, at 10am at the cemetery. Thursday is Vietnam Veterans Day. The groups will salute those veterans who served selflessly in the Vietnam War. Bruce Huguelet will present the meaning of the POW/MIA table.

Blanco County Republican Chair Ann Hall has announced that the 2012 Blanco County Republican Convention will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2012, at the Courthouse Annex, Hoppe Room, 101 E. Lawrence and Patty Coffee of Mt. Horeb Baptist sing hymns before a message from Kendalia Community Church’s Charles Kemble. The final lunch of the season will be held at Gem of the Hills on Thursday, March 29. New Hope Lutheran and St. Michael’s Episcopal host the final event. Read carefully Ezra 9 and 10. In these verses, we see several steps leading to revival (Ezra 9:9). First, we see a conviction of sin (Ezra 9:3). Second, we see an acknowledgment of sin (I am guilty). Third, we see a confession (verbally communication) of sin to God. Fourth, we see a turning from sin (repentance).

"Never Thirst Again", a dramatic musical telling the Easter story through the eyes of the woman at the well, will be presented by the Blanco First Baptist choir this Sunday evening, April 1 at 7:00 pm. Dillard Franks Stone, Sr. was born on March 29, 1929, in Logansport, Louisiana, to Buck Stone and Ray Alla Yarborough Stone. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Philippi Lewis Stone, daughter Carolyn Stone Johnson and son-in-law Greg Johnson, and granddaughter and grandson-in-law Courtney and DJ Hofmann. He is also survived by his beloved cat, BabaLoo. Dillard graduated from Freeport High School in Freeport, Texas, in 1947.

Danny Walter Hildebrandt, born on June 11, 1962, was called home to be with the Lord on March 16, 2012, at the age of 49 after a short battle with cancer. A 1979 graduate of Klein High School, Danny followed his passion for agriculture and worked on several dairies and ranches over the last three decades.

Dear Editor, On the night of March 19, my herd of goats was attacked by a pack of dogs. Every nanny, each hopefully in the early stages of pregnancy, was injured. Two had to be put down, and I’m very worried about three more. I apoke to the Sheriff’s office about this and asked if others in my area (Rocking J) had had similar problems.

AUSTIN — Even with better-than-normal rainfall in many locales in the last quarter of 2011 and the first quarter of 2012, lake and reservoir levels remain low and widespread concern about drought and wildfire remains high. Meanwhile, Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples on March 21 announced agricultural losses attributed to the 2011 drought had reached $7.62 billion.

The Blanco FFA Chapter continued a busy livestock show season with several members traveling to Houston to take part in the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. With almost 27,000 livestock entries each year, Houston has proven to be the largest youth show in the world. Overall, Blanco FFA members qualified seven animals for the premium sale.

On March 5, the Hill Country Spurs 4-H horse judging teams traveled to Houston to compete in the largest horse judging competition on the world. There were over 800 horse judgers competing on that day. The contestants judged four performance and four halter classes. Our club had five teams competing with other 4-H teams.

The Panther softball team traveled to Ingram on Tuesday, March 20, and defeated the Warriors 28-3. The Panthers scored 26 runs in the second inning. Callie Culton pitched two innings with four strike-outs, no hits, and no runs earned. Meaghen Seales pitched the third inning, adding another strike-out for Blanco. Callie Culton, Abbie Culton, and Angel Williams all batted 1000.

The Panther varsity baseball team is 2-0 in district play and 12-4 overall. Blanco defeated Harper 20-4. Pete Chalico picked up the win and is now 3-0 on the year. The big sticks for the Panthers were Chalico, Kyle Gray, Weston Copenhaver, and Josh McCaslin with 2 hits each. Blanco defeated Ingram 28-3.

The Blanco Panther JV Baseball Team is off to a fast start this season, winning eight of their first ten games. This past weekend, the Panthers swept all three games at the annual Blanco JV Baseball Tournament to win the championship. In their first game, Blanco defeated the Harper Longhorns 8 to 1 behind a strong pitching performance from Kyle Sauceda.

The varsity girls were the only 2A school participating in the March 22 track meet at Wimberley. They competed against 3A, 4A, and 5A schools, placing 4th overall. The girls took 1st place in the 200m relay, 4th in the 100m relay, and 3rd in the 400m relay. Individual results are as follows: Monica Flores came in 3rd place in the 100m run.

Wow! What a great response Keep Blanco Beautiful has had to their call for help with the April 14 Trash-off event. Over 100 Blanco citizens have signed up to clean our city’s roadways and parks. Thirty-four local businesses are participating with donations that help keep Blanco beautiful all year long. There is always an opportunity to help.

While doing missionary work in Uruguay, South America, my companion and I met a young man on the streets of Montevideo who expressed interest in our message. He gave us an address and suggested that we meet him there at a certain time the next day. At the appointed hour, we descended from an old city bus and stared up at the address we had been given—it was posted in bold numbers at the entrance to Montevideo’s principal cemetery!

March 24, 1961 Doris Schmidt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Schmidt, was elected as the 1960-61 FFA Sweetheart of the Blanco Chapter. • The Blanco FFA Dairy Products Judging team won third place in the judging contest held at San Marcos State Teachers College. Members of the team were Donald Rose, Lynn Banks, and Ronald Kneupper.
