Mark your calendar and join us April 14 for our 15thAnnual Fish Fry Fundraiser. The fundraiser will be held at the fire station, located at 503 Pecan Street, from 4:30pm to 7:00pm. Plates are by donation, which include fried fish and all the trimmings, as well as dessert and tea. Raffle tickets will be sold at the door. Blanco Project Graduation will host the 7th Annual Blanco River Run on Saturday, April 14, at 9am on the square. The 5K run/walk winds through Blanco State Park before ending back on the square. Medals will be awarded through three places at five-year age groups. There’s also a kids’ fun run. Each participant will receive a custom t-shirt.

Blanco Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Buck Ford announced the appointment of Sandy Gravenor as interim principal of Blanco Elementary School at the April 9 BISD Trustees meeting. Former principal Sue Ann Reininger, whose resignation was announced last month, is currently working with students in the Alternative Education Program. The Great American Clean-up, Blanco version, is this weekend! If you can not join the community effort at 9 a.m. in Bindseil Park, take some time to pick-up litter that has strayed onto your property! Plant some colorful flowers! With all the green in our yards the flowers will really pop. You have the rest of this week (until Friday the 13th) to take bulk items to the city yard for disposal.

Twelve people attended the Concealed Handgun Class on April 7, 2012, at the Baker Guns/Baker Surveying conference room. Mike Cox of Driftwood CHL does the instructions at the conference and then the range portion at the Baker Ranch, just 5 miles north of Blanco. The class is held on the first Saturday every two months.

On April 21, Blanco County residents will have the opportunity to dispose of their large household trash items at the Blanco County – IESI Transfer Station. The event location is at 377 Transfer Road (between Johnson City and Blanco) and trash items will be accepted from 8am until 3pm. Household quantities of tires, lead acid and rechargeable batteries, electronics (including cell phones, telephones, computers, and televisions), motor oil, and antifreeze will be accepted.

Be sure to bring your kids by the library over the next two weeks to check out our butterfly chrysalises. They will be coming out of their chrysalises sometime during the next week. US Representative Lamar Smith stopped in Blanco County on April 5 to meet with voters. He attended a lunch at Papa Joey's, speaking with and answering questions from about 25 voters. Smith also spoke with Mayor Chuck Homan and a couple of county commissioners. Smith made a stop at the Blanco County News after lunch to speak with editor Charles Willgren.

What? No Wild Flower Days in Johnson City this year? Come out anyway and join the Texas Master Gardener Association of Blanco County on Saturday, April 28, in Memorial Park on Main Street (Hwy 290) in Johnson City from 9am to 4pm as they hold a Celebration of Spring. The Texas Master Gardener Association of Blanco County is a non-profit organization whose primary goal is to educate the public about good gardening practices.

The 2012 Pedernales Knap-In will be held the weekend of April 12-15. This is the weekend before the Nibblet’s Bluff Knap-In in Louisiana. The big news is that it will be held at a new location! The old location, Ft. Martin Scott in Fredericksburg, is unavailable due to the field (our parking and camping area) being leased to the Former Texas Rangers Association for construction of a Texas Ranger Heritage Center.

Members of C Battery, 6th Battalion, 84th Artillery will again muster in Johnson City April 14-15. C Battery was activated in August 1967 at Fort Irwin, California. The unit trained there for deployment to Vietnam and in December 1967 it was declared combat-ready and departed from Long Beach, California in January 1968.

Gene Triesch of Blanco has been elected President of South Texas Gospel Music Association (STGMA). STGMA is a Christian-based organization of gospel music singers, songwriters, fans and churches that promote gospel music. A little girl was walking home from school during a thunderstorm. Her mother was concerned and was walking to meet her daughter. She saw her daughter skipping and laughing as she walked home in the storm. When there was a lightening flash the girl would stop and smile. Her mother grabbed her and rushed her into the house.

Elsie I. White, a resident of Canyon Lake, passed away early Monday morning, April 9, 2012, at Rio Terra Assisted Living in New Braunfels at the age of 87. Elsie was born on November 6, 1924, in Corpus Christi to Jesse Johnson and Louie Effie Duncan Johnson. During Elsie's professional career, which spanned some 22 years, she was vice president of White, Inc., located in Houston. Survivors include her loving husband, Howard F.

Frances Louise Potter, 96, passed away on April 3, 2012, in Llano, Texas. She was born August 10, 1915, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Jesse and Kittye Morrow Newton. Kenneth Ray Bindseil passed away at his home in Rockland, Maine, on March 5, 2012, following extended health issues. he was born May 30, 1945, in Blanco, Texas, to Roland and Viola Bindseil. He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Arlon and Marilyn Bindseil; two nieces; one nephew; and six great nephews. Kenneth graduated from Blanco High School in 1963, then went on to pursue higher education.

AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry on April 3 issued a disaster declaration for the North Texas counties of Dallas, Tarrant and Kaufman after system of tornados passed through, causing widespread damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure. According to an early count by the American Red Cross about 650 structures were affected, with 200 destroyed and more than 100 sustaining major damage.

The annual alumni baseball games were played Saturday, April 7, at the Panther baseball field. The junior varsity and alumni played at 1pm, followed by the homerun hitting contest. This year’s winner was Eddie Calzoncit. The current varsity team then faced the alumni at 5pm. The alumni won both games.

The long drive to Junction for the clash of the district softball leaders, the Panthers and Eagles, proved to be worth every mile as the Blanco girls held on for a 5-4 win on Friday, April 6. Callie Culton pitched the distance, going seven innings with six strike-outs, four walks, and five hits.

The Panther tennis team traveled to Junction Wednesday, April 4, and Thursday, April 5, to play in the 8-AA district tournament. Kellam Nabers and Joanna Delavan defeated Taylor and Koft of Junction in their first round, but fell in the second round to Moore and Sheriff, the eventual first place pair from Ingram.

The Blanco Panther boys golf team outscored the second place Ingram Warriors by 111 strokes to secure the 8-AA district championship on Monday, April 2, at Vaaler Creek in Blanco and Tuesday, April 3, at Schreiner in Kerrville. Blanco scored a 698 two-day total, with Ingram shooting an 809 total.

As area building supervisor in the 1960s, my father was responsible for the construction of a church building in the city of Hermosillo on the west coast of Mexico. The plans called for an unusual vaulted, reinforced concrete roof over the main part of the large building. He traveled frequently between our home in Mexico City and Hermosillo to check on the building’s progress.

April 9, 1965 Mrs. Laura McDowell was named the conservationist of the year of the Pedernales Soil Conservation District. She was presented her award at the regular meeting of the Blanco Lions Club on Tuesday evening at Robin’s Diner. • Nearly an inch-and-a-half of rain fell here in a thunderstorm Monday night that produced an extraordinary lightning display.
