When the Labor Day fires in Bastrop roared though Camp Wilderness Ridge, they left little behind, destroying the campers' cabins and everything in them. Much of the boys' camp has been rebuilt, but with a June 1st re-opening on the horizon, the call for volunteer help went out, and the Blanco County Volunteers quickly answered.

The Blanco FFA Chapter spent the past week in Stephenville competing in the Tarleton State University State FFA Career Development Events. Of the six events Tarleton hosted, Blanco qualified teams to compete in five different competitions; more than any other school at this year’s event. Round Mountain Volunteer Fire Department hosted an open house for residents of their service area in North Blanco County on Sunday, April 22, 2012. The public was invited to meet the volunteer firefighters, see the department’s firefighting equipment, and tour the facilities. Everyone knows that when they come into the library, they meet smiling faces and a large collection of books, movies, and computers to peruse and use. What they may not know is the wonderful District Board of Trustees who helps to run the daily operations of this friendly library. Dear Editor, This is the third time I saw this photo of this panther in this paper (“Mystery Photo Reveals Why We’re the Blanco Panthers,” April 25, 2012). I read the article and the latter part of a paragraph of Angeline Fulcher stating she was at that time the last living direct descendent of Sam Houston. I lived in Houston twenty-two years.

Springtime brings an abundance of wildflowers blooming along the Gillespie County Country School Trail. Cherry Mountain and Crabapple School will be open May 12, 2012; they along with the St. John Lutheran Church at Crabapple. Docents will be available to share the rich history of these buildings and grounds. Cherry Mountain will open their log cabin school (1883) along with the present school built in 1926, located at 2866 Cherry Mountain Loop.

The Blanco FFA Chapter recently competed in two competitions at the annual Texas State University Career Development Events held in San Marcos and New Braunfels. Overall this year, more than 200 schools and 1,500 contestants competed in the various events. The local FFA chapter did very well, taking home two 1st place banners.

Blanco I.S.D. will be conducting annual athletic physical screenings for the 2012-2013 school year on Wednesday, May 16, at 2:45pm in the Blanco High School Gym. Cost is $25 per student and must be paid in cash or a check payable to Blanco Regional Clinic. All students in 7th-12th grades who will be in athletics are required to have an annual physical screening before participating in athletics. The Blanco Panther baseball team soundly defeated the Junction Eagles 13-0 on Friday, April 27, to close out district play. Josh Flores, Chad Marshall, and Weston Copenhaver pitched for the Panthers. Skylar Itz, Sam Isenberg, and Chad Marshall each hit doubles. Jessie Ruiz and Logan Dodd each hit a single and Petey Chalico hit two sacrifice flies. April was a busy month. You should have the garden planted and the flower gardens blooming. The larkspur are beautiful and the bluebonnets are already bloomed out. They must dry and throw their seed for next year’s blooms. Don’t mow until the plants have completely dried. This is a very ugly part of the season.

The 13th annual South Texas Gospel Music Association Convention & Showcase Concert was held on Saturday, April 28, at Oak Ridge Baptist Church in San Antonio. After holding the convention in San Marcos for two consecutive years, STGMA returned to the place where its first convention was held. Two Blanco groups, Gene & LaVada Triesch and Jerry & Deanna Dosser, performed at the showcase concert.
