At its regular meeting on May 8, the Blanco County Commissioners Court passed a resolution recognizing May 2012 as Older Americans Month in Blanco County. Construction activity at the elementary campus has been progressing noticeably. “After months of planning and preparation, construction activity at the elementary campus has finally gotten to the point in which observers can see visible progress,” said Superintendent Dr. Buck Ford. This week has been particularly active. Demolition crews took down the east and west add-on classrooms that had been a part of the historical building’s front façade since the 1950s.

The Annual Blanco FFA Rabies Clinic will be held Wednesday, May 16, at the Blanco High School Agricultural Science Department from 3 pm to 6 pm. Dog vaccines are rabies and DHPP. Cat vaccines are rabies and FVRCP/LEUK. Rattlesnake vaccine is also available. If this is your animal’s first snake vaccine, your animal must have a booster in 30 days at the Blanco Veterinary Clinic.

The 8th Annual Lavender Festival is only a few short weeks away. This year promises to be our best year yet with over 100 vendors, live music, and a wide variety of fabulous food and drinks. The Chamber couldn’t pull off such a huge event without the help of volunteers! Festival hours are Friday, June 8, Noon-6pm, Saturday, June 9, 9am-5pm, and Sunday, June 12, 10am-4pm.

Blanco defeated Ozona in a 2 out of 3 series at 11-5 and 5-1 to advance to the Area playoffs against Anson this weekend. Tied at 5 in the 5th inning, the Panthers scored 4 to go up 9-5 and pull away to get the victory. Kyle Sauceda came in relief to pick up the win, striking out 7 in 3-1/3 innings. Visitors to Blanco State Park will have a chance to see some serious shine on Friday, May 18th and Saturday, May 19th. Stars in the Park and the annual Blanco Classic Car Show will be happening on the same weekend, making it a great weekend to get out of the house and see some heavenly bodies at the park – stars and cars! The viewing begins on Friday night at 8:00pm when visitors to Blanco State Park have an opportunity to get a close-up view of the night sky at Stars in the Park.

State Law requires county appraisal districts to notify property owners about changes in their property’s value. Springtime in the Hill Country brings an abundance of wild flowers blooming along the Gillespie County Country School Trail. Cherry Mountain and Crabapple School will be open May 12, 2012; they along with the St John Lutheran Church at Crabapple. Docents will be available to share the rich history of these buildings and grounds.

If you have a puppy 18 months old or younger, and it hasn’t had its puppy parvo and booster shots call your local veterinarian, Emancipet, or check with the local FFA. A particularly bad strain has been seen in Blanco and is very contagious amongst dogs. Parvo could potentially be fatal for dogs of that age.

Edward Povey, master painter who draws inspiration from the classic masters, will be teaching a series of workshops at the Uptown Blanco Art Center. His workshops are available for beginners to experts vary in topics including composition, brushwork, drawing, painting, and glazing. The seminar taught by the artist on May 3 has already received praise and attendees and honoree alike have become so enthralled and focused that the classes have gone past the time allotted.

The Directors of the Blanco Historic Cemetery Association thank all of you who have paid your $25 annual maintenance contribution. At the annual members’ meeting in February, the members voted to pay $25 per family per year so that the costs of maintaining the cemetery could be covered without dipping into funds that have been set aside for possible expansion.

Blanco's own Jerry and Deanna Dosser will debut their new CD, Western Sunday, on May 12. They will be holding a CD release party at the the Uptown Blanco Restaurant Courtyard. The new CD is devoted to the sound of country gospel music and features some of the couple's favorite songs and hymns. The Dossers recorded the compilation of songs at Los Senderos Studios in Blanco.

Will “Bill” Joy was born on July 30, 1934 in Hays County to Mattie Mozelle Sorrells Joy and Tom Joy. Bill died on May 3, 2012 in Batz Sur Mer, France at the age of 77. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Germaine, and two children: Kari and her husband, Grady Moreland of Henly and Patricia and her husband, Ronnie Bushnell of Johnson City.

I want to express my feelings about the 5th grade students in our local schools. On May 3rd I had the pleasure helping the Johnson City Lions club serve lunch at the Farm Safety Expo for Kids at the Blanco County Fair Grounds. The students were from Johnson City and Blanco ISD.

On Tuesday of last week the DOW hit its highest level in four years as U.S. manufacturing had its fastest growth in 10 months. Manufacturing expanded last month at the strongest pace since June 2011, according to the Institute of Supply Management. But, Friday the DOW dropped 168.32 points to 13038.27 as news from April’s job growth wasn’t what investors were hoping for.

The Blanco Girls track team qualified for the State Track Meet in two events. Meaghen Seales won 2nd in the 1600 meter run at regionals in Odessa on April 28. The 800 meter relay captured 3rd at regionals, advancing to state in the wildcard position with the fastest 3rd place time of all four Texas 2A regions. The relay team members are Abbie Culton, Natalie Barnett, Leslie McClinton, and Abby Beard.

The Blanco Panther Softball team made the long drive to Gatesville to meet the Clyde Bulldogs team on Thursday, May 3, for the first game of the Area playoff series. The Panthers came out on fire with the first five batters taking bases on 4 hits and a walk. Blanco led 4-0 at the end of the 1st inning.

Many years ago I worked as a night stocker (sounds a little ominous, doesn’t it?) in an Albertson’s grocery store. I went to work at 10 or 11 p.m. and would get off the next morning at 6 a.m. I would re-stock the candy and nut aisle and operate the cash register for the shoppers who would come into the store at all hours of the night. When I worked in the grocery store, bar codes and scanners had not yet been invented.

Gentle readers: "The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain." But we are glad it's raining in Blanco (and the surrounding areas)! We need to lift up lots of prayers for Leon Coffee! He is having some serious health issues right now. I personally have never seen a smile light up a face like Leon's can and listening to him laugh makes you want to laugh right along with him.

May 9, 1969 A tornado traveled through Blanco County this week in 1969 causing damage to a VFW building, a new housing development, and a chicken coop. The tornado struck on the heels of violent weather occurring over most of Texas. There were no major injuries or deaths and damage was mostly minimal.
