Tickets are now on sale for the 22nd annual Rhinestones and Ropers Gala and the third annual True Grit Texas Hold ‘em Poker Tournament to benefit the Old Blanco County Courthouse. The annual gala, which supports the continued maintenance of the old gal through the Old Blanco County Courthouse Preservation Society, is set for Saturday, September 29. The gala is an evening of dinner and auctions on the grounds of the courthouse.

Following a public hearing at its September 11 meeting, members of the governing body of Blanco passed a budget for 2013-14 which remained unchanged from that proposed at its July budget workshop. President of the Blanco South Library District Nancy Cline thanked the city for its support of the library on behalf of the more than 5,000 patrons who use the library free of charge.

Blanco County received over 6.54 inches of rain by official count last Thursday and all day on Sunday. Willard Gibbons captured this view of the Blanco River over Trainer-Wuest Road, just off RR 1623.

A truck was found on a low-water ford just off RR 1623, about 3 miles from Blanco, during the deluge of rain last Thursday, September 13. The lights were on and the engine was running, reported Blanco Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Lynn Hicks. Crews from Blanco VFD, Spring Branch FD, and Johnson City VFD were called in to attempt a swift water rescue.

Jon Lewis “Lew” Ford, son of Blanco ISD Superintendent, Dr. Jon Buck Ford, signed with the Baltimore Orioles. The organization sent Lew to their Triple-A Norfolk Tides minor league team for a brief time before placing him on their Oriole line-up on July 29, 2012. This is the Ford’s first time on a major league baseball line-up since 2007. Ford began his baseball career with T-ball and Little League in Port Neches, Texas.

Tyler and Melanie Griffin of Indianola, Washington, welcomed the birth of their daughter, Madison Elise. She was born on September 5, 2012. She weighs 7 lbs 3 oz and is 19.5 inches long. Grandparents are Tim Griffin and Lesley Griffin of Blanco, and Tony and Denise Hanson of Emporia, Kansas.

Your city representatives want to update its citizens on the status of the pending issues the city has with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, or TCEQ. As many of you know, the city’s sewer plant is quite old, over 50 years. Moreover, the plant is taking in much more effluent than it was when it was placed on line.

In colonial Philadelphia, our nation was founded upon prayer. Cry Out America, Remembering 9/11 is a grassroots prayer initiative involving sacred assemblies in all 50 states. Blanco County's own assembly was held last Tuesday, September 11, 2012, on the east lawn of the Courthouse. There were many in attendance to pray for our country, renew the spirit of patriotism through song and pledge, and honor our local first responders–the Volunteer Fire Department, Police Officers, and EMS).

The Uptown Blanco Art Center hosted the opening of a photographic exhibit featuring the work of Blanco County resident Joe Walsh, who specializes in landscapes. Mr. Walsh’s photographs, primarily of western American scenic views, are technically accomplished and striking in composition, always beautiful, and sometimes ethereal. Hill Country Memorial will host a Service of Remembrance at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 15, at the HCM Women’s Pavilion to remember babies lost to miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death. October is designated as Infant Loss Awareness Month, and communities around the world will be holding remembrance services. Last year’s local event drew about 50 people.

On the eve of teal hunting season, which opened Sept. 15, LCRA is reminding everyone that hunting and possession of a firearm are prohibited on all LCRA lands and water. The ban, which has been in place for years, is contained in LCRA Land and Water Use Regulations. The question had to go through a lot of minds in Blanco County last Thursday night: "How much higher is this water going to get?" When water gets loose in a house, it goes everywhere and destroys wherever it goes, and what it doesn't destroy it ruins or damages. Volunteers Ruby, Rebecca, Kayla and Diane with Trinity Lutheran Church welcomed shoppers to the Blanco Good Samaritan Center Monday morning. The center, which also houses a community food pantry, was closed all last week while a new floor was installed and other renovations were made. Hours at the center are 10 a.m.

This year’s courthouse weekend starts at sundown on Friday, September 28, with a free showing of the Coen Brothers’ “True Grit.” The movie will be shown on a large screen on the courthouse lawn – bring chairs or blankets. Showtime is at sundown, weather permitting.  Free popcorn will be available, and soft drinks and water for $1.

St.Ferdinand Catholic church and pastor, Fr. Justin Udumah were visited this last week-end by Bishop Cletus Chandrasiri Perera from the diocese of Ratnapura. Ratnapura is located in the country of Sri Lanka, which is a tropical island nation off the southeast coast of the Indian subcontinent. The total area of Sri Lanka is 65,610 sq km.

Young Life club is up and running in Blanco County! We have had two “clubs” to date (September 10th and 17th), and could not be more excited about the direction Young Life is going. On our first meeting (September 10th), nearly 90 high school kids from Blanco County packed our Young Life building and participated in lots of songs and games.

To the Editor; My husband and I recently had the privilege of viewing a series of three films about WWII begining with D-day invasion. These films were very informative as well as educational. They were of particular interest to me as I had an uncle killed in France. The films depicted the extreme struggle the American soldiers went through so the world would be free.

On a road trip to Center Point the Panthers were no match for the Pirates as Blanco won 3-0 on Tuesday, September 11th. Set scores were 25-6, 25-16, and 25-16. The Junior Varsity also won their match, 25-20 and 25-16. The Panthers hosted Cornerstone Christian on Firday, September 14th. The Varsity won again 3-0, with set scores 25-19, 25-11, and 25-11.

My first long-term Boy Scout camping experience took place at Camp Steiner in the lofty Uinta Mountains of Utah near the border with Wyoming. For a solid week I was in Boy Scout heaven. My buddies and I roamed the forests and lakes and streams and climbed snow-capped peaks in search of adventure.
