The Blanco Panthers opened district play this past Friday as they hosted the Rogers Eagles, the fifth-ranked team in the state in 2A. With a large homecoming crowd on hand, fans witnessed a big first half for the Panthers before a late defensive stop by Blanco on a two-point conversion preserved a 28 to 27 victory. Blanco completely dominated the first half of play, jumping out to a 21 to 0 lead going into the locker room for halftime.

Blanco County Commissioners met in a Regular meeting on October 9, 2012. All four commissioners were present. County Commissioner Chris Liesmann asked Mr. Roberts, representative for the developer, to give a report to the Court on the developer’s progress. Mr. Roberts replied that “lots of clean-up had been done, the road was being made ready for the base, and we are coordinating with PEC for road crossings.

Uptown Blanco’s 2nd annual quilt show, “Wildflowers,” is dedicated to Lady Bird Johnson who loved wildflowers and was also an avid collector of contemporary and historic quilts. This year marks her 100th birthday and we will be celebrating the occasion and honor Mrs. Johnson with this beautiful wildflower themed exhibit and show at Uptown Blanco Arts & Entertainment in Blanco, TX.

In the Spotlight portion of the October 8 meeting of the Blanco Independent School District Trustees, Blanco High School principal Dustin Barton honored agriculture teachers Jason and Felice Marek. Jason has taught at Blanco High School for 21 years, his wife Felice for 20. Their accomplishments include sponsoring one of the largest FFA chapters in the state, with 152 members this year.

The rodeo's coming October 19 and 20, so pull on your boots, grab your ropes, pick up your date for the evening, and head to Yett Park in Blanco! It's the Second Annual EB Franklin Memorial Rodeo, produced by Lester Meier Rodeo Company, and a good time will be had by all! Thursday, October 18, there will be a jackpot county roping, open to Blanco and surrounding counties, with buckles going to open and incentive winners.

Kevin and his AQHA horse Kansas Artillery shot six stages over two days and beat his closest competitor by eleven seconds, winning the Western Southern Regional Shoot held in Salado, Texas on October 6 and 7. Mounted shooters from as far away as Idaho and Tennessee attended the match where they shot for over $5,000 in cash and prizes. Cub Scout Pack 497 of Blanco met Wednesday night for their monthly pack meeting at the United Methodist Fellowship Hall. The much needed rain made for some muddy challenges during courthouse gala weekend but the spirits of the participants and the organizers never dampened. All events went on as scheduled, if not exactly as planned. The Friday night showing of True Grit, originally planned for a large screen on the courthouse lawn, had to be moved indoors to a smaller screen inside the courthouse.

Senior Blanco FFA member James Leachman spent last week in Dallas competing in the market steer show at the State Fair of Texas. After winning 1st place in the fourth class of light weight exotic cross steers, Leachman was then named the Champion Light Weight Exotic Market Steer. James’ Charolais cross steer weighed 1,244 lbs.

On Saturday November 10, 2012, the American Legion Post 352 will host the 5th Annual Veterans Parade at 10:00am in beautiful downtown Blanco. This year the parade will be followed by the first ever Red, White & Blue All American Fundraiser on the lawn of the Old Blanco County Courthouse to benefit the Post and its programs.

A politician had been criticized heavily by a journalist in the local paper. The journalist ran into the politician in the city park. The journalist confessed that on reflection he had been too harsh and, in some cases, just plain wrong in his criticisms and he apologized. The politician said, "I appreciate that, but from now on would you criticize me in the park and apologize in the paper." It is sometimes said that confession is good for the soul.

Charles Everett Carpenter, 76, passed away doing what he loved, jogging, on August 28, 2012, in Blanco, Texas. Mr. Carpenter was an architect in Atlanta for over thirty years. Born near Paris, Kentucky, he served in the Air Force in Lyon, France in the early sixties. He is survived by his wife, Susan L.

The DOW rose last Friday following better than expected U.S. economic numbers. U.S. manufacturing and the U.S. unemployment both reported better than expected news. Down from 8.1% to 7.8%, U.S. unemployment was down to its lowest level since January 2009. The DOW rose 1.3% to 13610, ending a two-week losing streak on Friday.

The State of Texas last week agreed to drop its recently adopted practice of using “weak matches” of Social Security Administration data in purging names from voter rolls as required by a 2011 state law. The Blanco Panther band competed in the 34th Annual “Drums Along the Medina” marching contest on Saturday, October 6, at Southwest High School. The Panther band placed 2nd in the AA Division and won outstanding Drum Major in AA. The band marches in the UIL Regional marching competition at 4:15 at East Central High School on Saturday, October 13.

Blanco ISD’s elementary school building project was the subject of a presentation at the state convention of the Texas Association of School Boards and the Texas Association of School Administrators, held last weekend in Austin. “The annual TASB/TASA conference is the premier gathering of Texas school district officials,” said school attorney Matt Burns.

Meaghen Seales continues to post outstanding finish performances in Cross Country, as she won the Fredericksburg Cross Country meet last Saturday with a time of 12:25. “Considering the weather, I was pleased with our performance,” said coach Stuart Schultz. “Bret Nance had a 13:58, and Breanna Collins ran a 14:08. Natalie Barnett ran a 15:37.

The 7th grade Panthers defeated the Rogers Eagles 26-0 on Thursday, October 4. The Panthers scored 2 quick touchdowns with rushes by Will Granburg to lead 12-0 at 2:58 remaining in the 1st quarter. The 2 point conversion attempts failed on each. The Panthers scored again on a 30 yard run by Toby Triesch.

The 8th grade Panthers lost to the Rogers Eagles 12-26 on Thursday, October 4. The Panthers struck first on an outstanding play by Cameron Martinez as he stripped the ball from an Eagle runner and carried it 35 yards for the Blanco touchdown. The 2 point attempt failed. The Panthers led 6-0 at the end of the 1st quarter.

The Panther volleyball team tallied one district loss and one district win this past week, falling to Lago Vista, 0-3, on Tuesday, October 2, and defeating Johnson City, 3-0 on Friday, October 5. Against Lago Vista, the set scores were 19-25, 17-25, and 9-25. Reagan Rogers led the Panthers with 10 kills.

I would like to thank everyone who openly (or secretly) congratulated me for my team, WVU, beating the Longhorns Saturday night. It was a good game, the weather was, to put it mildly, brisk, and it was a big thrill for me to see such a wave of blue and gold in the stands - I didn't realize how homesick I was.

When you decide to build in a subdivision, you might want to ask a few questions, or even when you buy land, because occasionally the owner or prior owners will have a stipulation on what you can build. Subdivisions with restrictions do help you retain property values, whereas, if you buy in that subdivision where there are no restrictions, just so you can put up that log home, you never know what will be next to you or up the road.
