The Blanco Panther Band proudly marched their way to a decade of Division I ratings on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at the UIL Region 12 Marching Contest at East Central High School. Beginning in the fall of 2003, the Panther band has received “1’s” for their marching shows. This year’s Latin show scored straight “1’s” from all three judges.

It’s hard to believe that Blanco is the home of not only a great high school football team and band, the beautiful Blanco State Park, the multi-faceted Lavender Festival, but also world-class classical music in the lovely Uptown Blanco Ballroom. Blanco Performing Arts presents their third season, opening on Saturday, November 10 at 7:30 pm with Melissa Marse, pianist.

The 1st Annual Blanco Western Showcase is proud to present Jack Dagger and Dan Mink as two of the entertainers who will be at this exciting event November 2, 3, and 4, 2012, hosted by Buggy Barn Museum.
Jack Dagger is also known as the King of Fling and is a world renowned knife throwing comedian.

Anyone wishing to vote early for the November 6, 2012, General Election may do so starting October 22, 2012. Regular hours for early voting will begin October 22, 2012 and run through November 2, 2012. It will be held in the Conference Room, Room 108, Blanco County Annex, 101 E.

Mayor Chuck Homan introduced newly-appointed Interim Police Chief Larry Feinstein to Blanco City Council members at their regular meeting October 9. A native of Houston and a proud third-generation Texan, Feinstein is a graduate of the University of Texas and the Southern Police Institute. He has 36 years of experience in law enforcement and has worked for the past 3 ½ years as a reserve officer in Blanco.

Panther football fans are getting their money’s worth this season as, once again, this past Friday’s game came down to the final drive to determine the victor. Other than Blanco’s blowout win over Comfort, every other game for the Panthers has gone down to the wire with last Friday’s game at Schulenburg possibly being the most exciting as Blanco rallied from a 21-point deficit to grab the win.

United States Congressman Lamar Smith was in the City of Blanco on Monday, October 15, where he met with Mayor Chuck Homan and dropped in at the offices of Blanco County News. Representative Smith agreed to answer some questions for the newspaper:
Blanco News: “How do you feel about the Constitution of the United States?”
Congressman Smith: “I believe the Constitution of the United States of America is a sacrosanct document.

Trey Hunter released a 20-yard shot with his bow on his first 10-point buck Sunday night at the Hunter residence. After seeing pictures of him on the trail cam from that morning, Trey watched him come to the feeder just before dark. The double lung shot dropped him 75 yards from where he was hit.

Blanco Pioneer Museum hosted visitors from the Bluebonnet Trail Community Center in Marble Falls on Monday, October 15. Lawrence Coffee, right, demonstrated roping to Ben and the other visitors while Ken Fortune spoke about chuck wagon cooking and docents gave tours of the exhibit.

True Grit returned on September 29, 2012, to the Old Blanco County Courthouse upstairs courtroom. This time, however, it was not the film crews for the making of the Coen Brothers’ version of the movie ‘True Grit,’ but the hosting of the Third Annual Blanco True Grit Texas Hold ’Em Tournament, benefiting the Old Blanco County Courthouse Preservation Society (OBCCPS) and its mission to protect, enhance and preserve the venerable old 1885 Blanco County Courthouse.

“I worked for ten years to find a cannon for the Courthouse lawn in order to honor our Blanco County veterans,” declared County Judge Bill Guthrie on Monday. “I contacted military bases all over Texas to see if they had any surplus cannons. When that didn’t pan out, I tried going through retired military officers but without success.

This is the second and final call for all photo buffs to join the Friends of the Blanco State Park this Saturday morning, October 20, for a Photo Safari and Workshop led by local photographer Joe Walsh. The Fall season of the year should provide the best opportunity for viewing and displaying the beauty of the Blanco State Park.
The Safari and Workshop will begin at 9 a.m.

This year’s concert is a delicate, exquisite program taken from highlight moments in the musical life of Director Vickie Pautz. The Choir convenes in September and performs the first weekend of December -- Friday, December 7, at 8 in Johnson City at the Church of the Hills and Sunday, December 9, at 7:30 in Blanco at the Baptist Church.

For the first time ever, the thrift store at the Blanco Good Samaritan Center will open in conjunction with the Blanco Market Days on the square through the end of this year.
Volunteers will staff the store only (no food distribution) Saturday, Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The store will also open Saturday, Nov.

Robert Eugene Miller of Blanco, Texas, formerly of Augusta, Kansas, passed away on October 15th. He was born May 12, 1928, in Augusta. His mother, Lillian Stevenson and father, Clarence Miller and his stepfather Ora Stevenson preceded him in death.
Also preceding him in death were his wife, Venita (Feemster) Miller of Augusta, and his brother Norman Miller, of Beaumont, Texas.

The DOW ended on a positive note this past Friday as it snapped a short losing streak while closing at 13328.85. Worries about bank profits balanced off against a jump in Consumer Sentiment. The worries were unfounded as two big banks -Chase and Wells- both reported better numbers than expected.

AUSTIN — Money paid in state taxes and fees doesn’t necessarily fund exactly what Texans think it will fund. So, Texas House Speaker Joe Straus last week appointed an Interim Committee on General Revenue Dedicated Accounts as part of an effort, he said, “to make our state budget more transparent and accountable to taxpayers.” The committee will report its findings and recommendations to the House in early January.

The Mid-Texas Symphony presents its annual free Children’s Concerts for fourth- and fifth-graders from New Braunfels, Seguin and other nearby communities on October 22nd at the New Braunfels Civic Center and on October 23rd at Jackson Auditorium in Seguin. Under the baton of Music Director David Mairs, the Mid-Texas Symphony will perform Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf with David Ferguson, news director of KNBT, narrating.

The Blanco FFA Livestock Judging Team competed in their first contest of the year this past weekend in Seguin as they participated in the Guadalupe County Livestock Judging Contest. Overall, there were 49 teams and 133 contestants competing in the junior and senior divisions.
In the junior division, Blanco Jr. FFA member Kolby Marek placed 10th overall while ranking 6th in Swine and 9th in Cattle.

The Blanco FFA recently competed in two events at the Tarleton State University National Invitational Career Development Events on September 27th and 28th in Stephenville, Texas. Blanco’s Entomology team consisting of Megan Wier, Erica Flores, Monica Flores and Rance Dollahite won their respective events and brought home the title of 2012 National Champions.

The Panther volleyball team recorded two wins this week, defeating the Randolph Ro-Hawks, 3-2, on Tuesday, October 9, and toppling the Ingram Warriors, 3-0, on Friday, October 12. Against Randolph the set scores were 22-25, 19-25, 25-13, 25-23, and 15-5. The Panthers made a great comeback after being down 0-2.

The Blanco Panther junior varsity football team overpowered the Schulenburg Shorthorns 50-28 on Thursday, October 11. The Panthers scored 6 on a touchdown run by Adrien Dominguez in the first minutes of the game. The 2 point attempt failed. The defense held the Shorthorns, forcing them to punt. The Panthers moved the ball downfield on a run by Dominguez, a pass from Jordan Wagner to Ross Edwards, and a run by Logan Dodd.

The Blanco Youth Football League traveled to Johnson City last Saturday, October 6. All three teams faced the Eagles. Final scores were as follows: Pee Wee 6-12, Junior Varsity 0-20, and Varsity 32-0. On September 29, the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams traveled to Liberty Hill to play San Saba.

“Christmas is a-coming, the goose is getting fat,” and Keep Blanco Beautiful is preparing for the celebration! Plans are underway for the Best Christmas Spectacular Ever! Lights are going up in Bindseil Park. Stars and trees, reindeer and camels, candy canes and candles (oh my!) are being refurbished thanks to the hard work of volunteers.

On a wall in my little home office there are two frying pans hanging from a nail. The old pans, one measuring about eleven inches in diameter and the other eight, are crusted black with carbon on the outside from some sixty-plus years of hard use. They were probably gifts when my parents wed back in 1937.
