“What better way to get into the Christmas spirit,” said Vickie Pautz, “than to listen to the wonderful music of the season?” The Blanco County Community Choir will perform at the Community Church of the Hills in Johnson City on Friday, December 7th at 8:00 p.m. and again on Sunday, December 9th at the First Baptist Church of Blanco at 7:30 p.m. The free concerts will feature vocal renditions of “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Hark!

The second annual Christmas in Blanco Night Parade will be held this Saturday evening at 6:30pm. Come out and celebrate Christmas in beautiful downtown Blanco. This year we have an added feature: Bingo, the picture-taking, riding Longhorn Steer. Bingo will be all lit up with lights and bells and will be on the square for pictures.

On November 10, 2012 at the Northwest Marriott Hotel in San Antonio, Texas, Ron Houston was posthumously inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame honors those who have made significant and notable and extraordinary contributions to the radio industry in Texas. Ron’s career spanned more than 40 years at various radio stations in the San Antonio area including KTSA, KEXL, KBUC, KFAN, and KENS AM.

Blanco Lions and Leo Clubs are teaming together to make your Christmas holidays a little warmer. The groups are holding a coat drive for Blanco to ensure that everyone has a coat. Please drop off your gently used or new coats that are just hanging around. Drop off locations are at the Baptist, Lutheran, and Methodist churches.

Another successful football season for the Blanco Panthers has come to an end as Blanco was defeated by the #2 ranked East Bernard Brahmas this past Friday in Bastrop. The 16 to 0 loss gives Blanco an 8 and 5 record on the year, while setting up a battle of top-ranked teams this week as the Brahmas take on #1 ranked Refugio on Friday in San Marcos at 7:30 pm for the Region IV Championship. Kids of all ages gathered in Bindseil Park on Saturday, December 1, for sled rides. The Christmas in Blanco Association hosted the event with funding from Blanco National Bank. “We were able to provide such an awesome Christmas event,” said Darlene McGill. “It was free of charge with sleds provided.

Hanna Garrett is all smiles and “Cole,” her Berkshire Barrow, is strutting his stuff after being named the Champion OPB Breed at the 2012 Dripping Springs Fall Classic on November 17. Grant Weaver is one of eleven members of the Texas A&M Ranger Challenge Team. Ranger Challenge is the varsity sport of the Army ROTC composed of highly motivated and physically fit cadets. Seven members of the Blanco FFA Chapter recently attended and helped work the 4th Annual San Antonio International Farm & Ranch Show held at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition show grounds and Freeman Coliseum. The show, which annually draws people from all across Texas and the Southwest, offers educational opportunities and seminars in addition to specialized training over new advancements in farming and ranching.

The Blanco Good Samaritan Center will open in conjunction with the Blanco Christmas Market Day on the square Saturday. Volunteers will staff the store only (no food distribution) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Blanco Good Samaritan Center helps people in need in Blanco and Blanco County. All funds for the center come from donations by several local churches, individual gifts, and the sale of second-hand clothing and other items.

The Blanco Chamber of Commerce welcomed new member Robert Avera, a principal of Avera Law Firm, PLLC, who has practiced law in the Austin area for several years. His practice includes estate planning, business entity formation, and commercial litigation. He has made over twenty presentations on the benefits of estate planning to groups throughout Central Texas.

The long awaited and much anticipated grand opening of the Spring Branch Tennis Center (SBTC) was celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, November 29. The Tennis Center is a dream fulfilled for SBTC board president Erinn Murray, board members, and tennis fans throughout Comal County, North Bexar County, and Blanco County. The initial plans began in 2006 for the center.

A teacher taught her fifth grade class that Jesus was buried in a borrowed tomb. One student said that she knew why - Jesus only needed it for three days! Christ can be your refuge. In Him we are sheltered from the coming wrath of God. “For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ” (I Thessalonians 5:9; Romans 5:9).

Hebrews 8:5 says, “Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern showed to thee in the mount.” The Old Testament is full of “types and shadows” of the New Testament.

First Baptist Church Blanco hosted a purity pledge on Sunday evening, December 2. 39 middle school, high school, and college students, surrounded by their friends and family in the church sanctuary, pledged to stay pure until marriage. The church thanks the parents and adults who supported the event and made it happen. A pledge to purity is very hard to make and it’s important that those students, and their friends and family, help each other stay accountable.

Reading Zephaniah made me think of our country, and all of us here in the USA. Although Judah had made occasional attempts at renewal, the people had no sorrow for their sins. They had allowed material comforts to become a barrier to their commitment to God. Prosperity had caused an attitude of self-sufficiency, not realizing that only God could save them.

Ervin L. Willard, 73, a career professional with the US Department of Agriculture, passed away at his home in Uvalde, Texas, on Saturday, December 1, 2012, following a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born on November 22, 1939, in Aberdeen, Texas. Stocks rose slightly this past Friday as investors were waiting on news regarding Congressional leaders’ latest attempt at solving the fiscal cliff before year’s end. The Dow closed at 13025.58 for the week. Investors could be in for a long wait if they expect both sides to agree on certain aspects of a deal.

Six students from Blanco High School competed to make the All-Region Band. Students competed against 400 other 1A-3A students to form the Region 12 All-Region Band. The downtown businesses and volunteers have been very busy these past weeks decorating for the holidays. We hope you take the time to visit downtown in the evening to enjoy the decorations. We have been replanting the pots that were damaged by the first cold spell. We planted Pansies. Blue Mealy Sage is being planted in the front flower beds at City Hall.
