Jan Brieger reported to the governing body of Blanco at their December 11 meeting on the recommended distribution of Hotel Occupancy Tax revenues to various community organizations. The Blanco Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the Hill Country Alliance, this week announced the implementation of a Night Sky-Friendly Business Recognition Program. The Blanco FFA Chapter recently wrapped up an extremely successful fall semester by competing at the State FFA Leadership Development Events at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. Local FFA members competed in the Public Relations LDE and placed 13th overall. Team members for this event included Callie Culton, Megan Andrews, Mackenzie Johnson, Tyler Hardin and Ryan Wagner.

Begin with a one-mile hike along the Caswell Nature Trail, taking time to discuss plants and animals along the way. Natalie Stahmann, a 2012 graduate of Blanco High School, received the Coaches Award for Defense at the Wayland Baptist University fall athletics banquet last week. She was one of the only freshmen to be honored with an award. Natalie played in all 18 games for the Pioneers, and was in the starting lineup for 16 of those games.

The Master Gardeners of Blanco County will be holding classes for new members beginning January 8, 2013. There is still room for a few more students. Thanks to Jon and Jan Brieger and their wonderful Staff at the Redbud Café, Christmas will be a little brighter for CASA “kids” this year. CASA “kids” are children who have been removed from their homes and are in the state’s Foster Care system within our area. The Briegers have hosted the CASA Angel Tree for the past 3 weeks.

Dear Blanco Ladies, I have to apologize for the delay in the news of the Woman’s Club lovely events. We started off this year’s theme, “The Circles of Women Around Us,” in October at Red Corral Ranch’s outdoor labyrinth. The setting and weather were beautiful. The Civic group hosted the program presented by Jack Twilley about being a CASA representative for children.

St. Ferdinand Catholic Church’s annual La Posada left the church grounds on Sunday afternoon. The procession, which recounts Mary and Joseph’s travels, made its way up Blanco’s streets to Live Oak Medical Center. The participants entertained residents with carols.

First Baptist Church of Blanco held its annual Childrens Christmas Performance on Sunday, December 16. The theme this year was Operation: Christmas Child and its mission to deliver gifts to lost children all over the world. A dinner in the fellowship hall followed and the night wrapped up with caroling around town.

Laura Ann Antonino was born May 25, 1954 in Sharon, PA. She passed away on Monday, December 17th, peacefully, with friends and family by her side. Laura will be remembered as the most kind-hearted woman. She played a motherly role to lots of people. She was a great cook and always gave the best advice.

Services were held on Monday December 10, 2012 in Blanco, Texas for former Holtville resident Clarence Little, who passed away on Monday, December 3. He was born on December 25, 1933 in El Centro, California, and raised in Holtville, graduating from Holtville High School in 1951. He attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, for two years before being called to serve in the United States Army.

The Lady Panthers traveled the short distance to the Canyon Lake Tournament on December 6, 7 and 8. Their first opponent was San Antonio Stacy. The Panthers romped to a 58-20 victory. Leslie McClinton paced the team with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 steals. Reagan Rogers added 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.

The boys' basketball teams had a busy week, starting at Randolph on Tuesday, going to the Devine Tournament on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and then traveling to Harper on Monday. The six-game-in-seven-day run began at Randolph against a strong Ro-Hawk team. The Panthers struggled to match-up with the Ro-Hawks throughout the night, as the hosts raced out to a 24-12 halftime lead.
