From Blanco-Pedernales Groundwater Conservation District
At the December 6, 2012 meeting of the Board of Directors, Ron Fieseler, General Manager of the Blanco-Pedernales Groundwater Conservation District briefed the Board on declining aquifer levels in District monitor wells, decreasing flow in the Blanco and Pedernales Rivers, recent rainfall history, and extended weather forecasts.

Blanco Elementary, riding a wave of strong performances, captured the District 27-AA UIL Academic meet title in competition held last Friday in Lago Vista.

With temperatures dropping and the winter solstice approaching, a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert has some suggestions on protecting South Central Texas landscapes from the icy fingers of Old Man Winter.
“In dealing effectively with South Central Texas winters, one fact that should be taken into account is that there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ winter,” said David Rodriguez, AgriLife Extension agent for horticulture, Bexar County.

15 members of the 2012 Highland Lakes Master Gardener Certification Program were honored with certified Master Gardener badges they earned after completing their classroom training and their volunteer service requirement. The new 2013 program will be starting in February. There are only a few slots available so you will need to apply right away.

A work day to set up pens, clean the show barn and make other additional preparations for the upcoming 2013 Blanco County Youth Show is scheduled for Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 9am at the County Livestock Show Barn in Johnson City.
All parents of exhibitors, 4-H, and FFA members are asked to come and help get the barn ready for the 2013 show.

The Hill Country CattleWomen are going to jump eagerly into 2013. We hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas with family and friends. We also hope and pray for a prosperous 2013. We especially pray for our country and our country's leaders, for good health, abundant rain, and a good cattle market.
Our first meeting will be Legislative and will be held the third Tuesday, January 15, 2013, with Social to begin at 10:00 am.

Sybil M. Riba, born July 1, 1915 in Mt. Pleasant, Texas passed away peacefully on December 26, 2012 with family by her side. Sybil lived a wonderful life of 97 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Harcrow and Lucy Embrey Harcrow; her sisters, Imogene and Lois; and brothers, Pat and Paul.

Every two years, the Texas Legislature’s main job is to write and pass a state budget.

With the cold weather upon us, I always look forward to building a fire in the fireplace. It can be a full custom fireplace or just a freestanding stove. Personally, I’ve had them both and will settle for either one, just as long as I have one of them. Not only do they provide the heat, but the ambiance they add to a room is awesome.
