Superintendent Dr. Buck Ford reported to Blanco ISD trustees at their February 11 meeting that the PTO of Blanco Elementary School has purchased Raptor Visitor Management software to keep out unwanted visitors and more closely monitor those who come into the school. Each visitor must have his or her driver’s license scanned, and an instant background check is performed to see if the individual is a sexual predator, has a restraining order, custody issues, or other custom alert.

Blanco State Park hosted the Buffalo Soldiers on Friday and Saturday. Students from the Blanco schools took a trip to the park on Friday to learn everything the soldiers had to teach. Programs included animal tracking, orienteering, frontier cooking, Seminole scout stories, saddle and cowboy history, general Buffalo Soldier history, drill with the Buffalo Soldiers, hooked on fishing with cane poles, and women on the frontier.

On February 12, 2013 Blanco County Commissioners conducted a Regular Meeting. All four commissioners were present, and the minutes of the January 22, 2013 Special Meeting were read and approved by the Court. The agenda for the Regular Meeting contained a number of items, and the first was consideration to accept the annual racial profiling report for 2012 for the Blanco County Sheriff Department in accordance with the Texas Racial Profiling Law (S.B.

Blanco EMS is inviting members of the community to a special volunteer information night on Tuesday, February 26, at the EMS Station, located at 607 Chandler. “You don't have to be a medic to volunteer with EMS,” says director Mike West. He hopes to bring people together at the meeting to explain who EMS is and what they do. The organization's volunteer needs range far and wide; and those who volunteer their time don't just help Blanco EMS but have a direct effect on the community.

Fourteen Panther Band students qualified for state at Solo and Ensemble competition held last Saturday at Sam Houston High School in San Antonio. “We had an outstanding showing this year,” said band director Brian Hecimovich. “Many judges were very impressed by how prepared Blanco students were, especially being one of the first regions in the state to go.” Comments on judges’ cards included “very mature presentations” and “excellent musical expression by all players.” Acco ...

“Gentlemen, start your cars.” Cub Scout Pack 497 held their annual Pinewood Derby on Sunday February 3, 2013 at the United Methodist Church. The race was a double elimination and each boy had the opportunity to race more than one race. The Derby was well attended by parents, grandparents, friends and siblings. The three winners who will represent Blanco in the district derby are Cole Tharp first place, Nick Hartman second place and Hayden Raczkowski in third place.

Remember that San Antonio artist and former Blanco resident, Betsy Dudley, will be speaking about her new book, Rena’s Gospel of Beauty, which is about her grandmother (the original Martha Stewart!) this coming Saturday morning at 11:00 am at the Library. This book is about a remarkable woman named Rena Munger Aldredge from Dallas, Texas, whose life was spent creating beauty for others.

Clifford L. Stovall, 87, of Blanco, passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. Clifford was born in Manitou, Oklahoma to Walter L. and Tennie Leta (Orbison) Stovall. He married Cola Mae Pritchard on March 24, 1946 in Frederick, Oklahoma, soon after Clifford joined the U.

Charlie Rappmund, 93, passed away February 11, 2013 in Blanco, TX. He was born November 4, 1919 in Converse, TX to Louis Rappmund and Martha Huebner Rappmund. His siblings are Erman Rappmund, Raymond Rappmund and Adeline Rappmund. Charlie served his country with the U.S. Army during WWII and worked twelve years for the Bindseil Red & White Grocery and Feed store.

AUSTIN — Texas’ current school finance system fails to provide substantially equal access to revenues needed to provide “a general diffusion of knowledge” in accordance with the state constitution, a Travis County state district court declared on Feb. 4. Judge John K. Dietz ruled in the lawsuit brought by nearly 700 school districts (as Texans for Real Efficiency and Equity in Education), three individual school districts, a group of intervenors and a charter school coalition.

Blanco Masonic Lodge # 216 delivered over sixty free tooth decay prevention kits to first graders at Blanco Elementary this week as part of a state-wide program to improve dental health. “We’re glad to be able to present these kits to Blanco first graders,” said Lodge representative Terry Miller. The Panthers battled the Lago Vista Vikings on Tuesday,, February 5 in their final district game. A Panther victory would tie the two teams in the district standings and force the teams to play again for playoff seeding. However, Blanco fell 32-46, giving Lago Vista the District championship. Senior Leslie McClinton led the team with 15 points.

The Panthers recorded two more district wins to maintain their tie with Ingram for first in the District 27-2A race. On Tuesday, February 5, the Panthers sank the Vikings, 61-33. Brett Champion paced the team scoring 14 points. Kyle Sauceda and David Ramirez each added 10 points. Josh McCaslin scored 8 with Carlin Green adding 7.

We’ve had spring and winter Blanco is registered for the 2013 Texas Trash-off Event. This year it will be held Saturday, April 13th. That is the second Saturday in April. So mark your calendars for Saturday April 13 and watch the newspaper for more information on how the event will be run in 2013.
